Footballers win thriller..

Our junior football team played in the semi-final of the East Cork Junior B football championship in Lisgoold on Sunday night.  Our opponents, Ballinacurra, have progressed to the County B final against Grange, so we knew it would be a tight game.  We opened the scoring with a goal from Éinne Ó hEochaidh.  A long ball was played in which Éinne met with a fist to give us the best possible start.  Ballinacurra had two points on the board before Ryan Prendergast scored a point from play.  A great passage of play finished with Barry Johnson scoring a second goal. This was quickly followed by a point from Terry Broderick.  We enjoyed a period of dominance with William Finnegan scoring two points from frees and Daniel Dooley scoring a point from play.  Ballinacurra finished the first half stronger and scored three unanswered points to leave us four points in the lead at half-time, Bride Rovers 2-5 to Ballinacurra 0-7. It was a good lead though we had several more scoring opportunities which if converted would have doubled our lead. Ballinacurra started the second half as they finished the first half and took a strong hold of the game.  We found it hard to settle, and before long our lead had been lost as Ballinacurra scored four points to level the game at 2-5 to 0-11.  Fifteen minutes into the second half William Finnegan scored a point from a free to give us a one point lead.  Ballinacurra responded with a point, before a counter-attack opened us up and allowed Ballinacurra to score a goal.  They followed this up with a point to give them a lead of 1-13 to 2-6 with ten minutes to play. These last ten minutes were hectic- don't talk about World Cups, Munster Finals or the like! We knew we would have to throw everything into attack and in true Rovers fashion every player responded.  Terry Broderick led the charge and scored a wonderful goal.  Ballinacurra responded with a point, before William Finnegan pointed another free.  We were winning most of the kick-outs at this stage, but were finding it difficult to break down the Ballinacurra defence.  Stephen Pratt kicked a long range effort that landed just over the bar to level the game as we headed into injury time.  Another kick out was won and a ball was sent in to Terry Broderick who found himself one-on-one with the Ballinacurra goalkeeper. He fisted the ball over the bar to put us in the lead for the first time in 20 minutes.  The resulting kick-out was won and Brian Murphy from Carrigtwohill blew the full-time whistle to give us a one point win on a scoreline of Bride Rovers 3-9 to Ballinacurra 1-14. It was a fantastic win with outstanding determination shown in the last few minutes when all seemed lost.

Team: Frank Hogan, Tadhg O'Sullivan, Shane Walsh, Jason Mannix, Shane O'Connor, Jason Pratt, Barry Johnson, Daniel Dooley, William Finnegan, DJ Cahill, Liam Forde, Ryan Prendergast, Damien Buckley, Éinne Ó hEochaidh, Terry Broderick, Ben Hogan, Shane O'Flynn, Stephen Pratt, Jake Tobin, Dylan Browne, Cian Howard, Shane O'Connor. We will play Russell Rovers in the final, with the date provisionally fixed for August 11th.

We've had some epic games against Ballinacurra over the years in football. Back in 1981  in Lisgoold in the first round of the JBFC we trailed by 1 5 to 1 4 in the last minute of the game. Liam Cahill kicked a free for us from about 30 yards out and the ball ended up in the net to give us a 2 4 to 1 5 win. We won our first ever JBFC that year captained by Tom Kearney. Ten years later we played Ballinacurra 4 teams in football championship games in the one season! We met 'the Village' in both the East Cork Championship and al so in the Open County JBFC (East Cork section)first round. In July 1991 we lost by 1 12 to 1 10 against Ballinacurra in Lisgoold -or goal coming from a Mike Hogan penalty and Terry Broderick contributing  two points. In August and September we met three times in the Co JBFC. The first game in Lisgoold was a draw. The replay also ended level and extra time was played and we were leading when the referee deemed it too dark to continue and called off the match. The third game was in Carrigtwohill on Sept 5th and we led 2 5 to 1 3 at half time having played with the breeze. Ballinacurra took over in the second half and won by 2 10 to 2 6. Twenty seven years ago and Terry Broderick is still going strong -truly a Bride Rovers legend.

EAST CORK JFL Div 3.

Our junior football team played their last league game away to Castlemartyr on last Monday night week.  It was an important game as a win would put us in a good position to reach the league final.  From our previous five matches we had two wins, two draws and one loss.  We started the game well with three points from play from Éinne O hÉochaidh, Shane O'Connor and Ryan Prendergast.  Castlemartyr responded with a pointed free and two points from play.  William Finnegan pointed a free before referee Brian Murphy stopped play for a much needed water break.  With the resumption of play our midfield pairing of William Finnegan and Daniel Dooley started to get a foothold, and from a series of well won kickouts, we scored a series of points to take a 0-8 to 0-4 lead at half time.  The four points came from Shane O'Connor, William Finnegan (2) and Liam Forde. The second half was a testing period as the temperatures and pressure from Castlemartyr forced the team to work hard.  Éinne O hÉochaidh scored the first point of the second half, followed by a point from a free by William Finnegan.  Our full back line of Shane Walsh, Jake Tobin and Tadhg O'Sullivan began to make piercing runs forward, resulting in Shane scoring a fine point from 35 yards. Terry Broderick scored two points from play, and Damien Buckley scored a point from a free, before the game ended on a scoreline of Bride Rovers 0-16 to Castlemertyr 0-10.

Team: Frank Hogan, Jake Tobin, Shane Walsh, Tadhg O'Sullivan, Shane O'Connor, Jason Pratt, Jason Mannix, Daniel Dooley, William Finnegan, DJ Cahill, Liam Forde, Ryan Prendergast, Shane O'Flynn, Éinne O hÉochaidh, Terry Broderick, Damien Buckley, Dylan Browne, Cian Howard, Shane O'Connor. We are now on 8 points in this League with 6 games played. Russell Rovers are on 7 and Castlemartyr on 6 but both have a game to play.

MINOR HURLERS PROGRESS.

At Ballyhooley on Wednesday July 11th our Minor Hurlers faced Fermoy in the Premier 2 MHC. We were missing Jordan, Kieran  and Griffin through injury so we faced a major challenge. After an even first quarter we took control with a crucial goal. It was scored by Brian Roche  after great work from Eoin, John Buckley and Conleith. |with Conor Barry unerring from frees we led by 1 9 to 0 4 at the break. We extended our lead to ten points mid way in the second half. A great pass from Edmond Cashman found Conor Barry and our second green flag ensued. We scored some great point and our defence in front of a solid Ben Hogan was very sound. Fermoy got through for a goal near the end but we still won by a nine point margin - 2 18 to 1 12. This win sees us through to the Championship semi final.

U15 Premier 2 Hurling League.

We had two games in the Co under 15 league over the last ten days, away to Valley Rovers and at home to Blarney.

We played Valley Rovers last week in Brinny in the u15 hurling league. It was a high scoring contest with the home side winning on a scoreline of 5-15 to 2-15. We were short several players for a variety of reasons on the night but the lads that came in did very well.  Panel Frank O Flynn,  Jacob Powell, Liam Collins, Eldon O Connor, David Barry, Conor Hazelwood,  Nicky Kelleher, Ronan O Connell, Cillian Tobin, Denis Cashman, Adam Walsh, Adam Hayes, Adam Hynes, Josh Ahern,  Tiernan McAllister, Edmund Cashman, Ben Knox,  Luke Harrington, Louis Roche,  Cillian Barry.

On last Thurs evening the 12th of July we played Blarney at home in the Premier 2 hurling league.  We have played Blarney in this grade the last three seasons with nothing between the sides and this game was no different.  After a high scoring contest Blarney got on top in the last quarter. With less than ten  minutes to go things were  not looking great as Blarney led by a margin of four points. Our lads put in a storming finish with four great points on the trot to draw the game on a  scoreline of Bride rovers 1-18 Blarney 2-15 team and scorers Frank O Flynn, Eldon O Connor, Liam Collins, Cormac O Sullivan, David Barry 0-1, Conor Hazelwood,  Nicky Kelleher,  Ronan O Connell, Cillian Tobin 0-2,  Denis Cashman,  Adam Walsh 0-2, Adam Hayes 0-6, Josh Ahern, Denis Cashman, Ryan O Callaghan, Louis Roche 0-1,  Edmond Cashman 1-5, Jacob Powell 0-1.

Bride Rovers Win Theresa Walsh memorial Tournament

On Saturday morning week last we hosted the Theresa Walsh memorial Tournament in Pairc na Bride. It was a great occasion with three counties Cork, Tipperary and Waterford represented.  Bride Rovers,  Mount Sion,  Lismore and St Mary's (Clonmel) contested this fantastic hurling tournament. The  first game was the Rovers vs Lismore with the Rovers winning on a scoreline of 4-5 to 0  2 . Our scorers  were Conor Hazelwood 2-2 Adam Hayes 0-1, Josh Ahern 0-1, Cillian Tobin 1-0,  Denis Cashman 1-0.  The second semi final was a gripping contest between St Mary's and the Ken McGrath coached Mount Sion with the Clonmel side coming out on top.  The 3rd and 4th place play off between Mount Sion and Lismore was a cracker with Mount Sion coming out on top by a point. It was onto the Tournament final then  between the Rovers and St Mary's. Having witnessed all the previous games this writer felt St Mary's might have the edge after their great semi final win. The Final  turned out to be a great display of attacking hurling with the Rovers winning on a scoreline of 4-15 to 0-0. It was really breathtaking stuff as our  boys were relentless on winning this trophy back as the scoreline shows. Scorers; Conor Hazelwood 3-1 Cillian Barry 0-3, Adam Hayes 0-3,  David Barry 1-1, Ronan O Connell 0-1, Louis Roche 0-1, Adam Walsh 0-1, Josh Ahern 0-1, Cillian Tobin 0-1, Nicky Kelleher 0-1 The panel for both games was Frank O Flynn, Eldon O Connor, Liam Collins, Cormac O Sullivan, David Barry (Captain),  Conor Hazelwood, Nicky Kelleher, Ronan O Connell, Cillian Tobin, Denis Cashman, Adam Walsh, Adam Hayes, Adam Hynes, Denis Cashman, Ryan O Callaghan, Louis Roche, Josh Ahern, Luke Harrington, Ben Knox,  Jack Keating,  Cillian Barry

After the Final Brendan Walsh presented the medals to the winners and runners up. Pat Walsh spoke emotionally about his late mother Theresa and her determination and positive attitude during her illness and her love of Bride Rovers. Thanks to all the members of the Walsh family for attending and for their support last Saturday. On receiving the Trophy Team captain David Barry replied very eloquently thanking the Tournament organisers, the Walsh family and the Bride Rovers selectors and trainers. He then called for the customary three cheers for St. Marys. Thanks to all who helped with the catering on the day and helping in any way. Thanks to our referees Seanie Knox, Griffin O Keeney and Pa O Driscoll.

Rebel Og North U 16 Hurling Championsip We played  Ballycastle Gaels in Kilworth on Monday last July 16th. Ballycastle Gaels are combination team drawn from Ballyhooley and Castletownroche. Though we had a great win over Killavullen in the first round we knew we were up against much stronger opposition this time. With only two players 'on the age' this was always going to be a tough ask of the younger lads. We met a very physically strong team but as usual they kept going to the end losing out to a very strong Ballycastle Gaels side on a scoreline of 1-8 to 3-17.  Panel and scorers; Darragh O Sullivan,  Jacob Powell, Liam Collins,  David Barry, Conor Hazelwood,  Nicky Kelleher, Ronan O Connell1-0 Cillian Tobin 0-1, Denis Cashman, Adam Walsh 0-1, Adam Hayes 0-5,  Tomas Macek, John Buckley,  Edmund Cashman, Ryan O Callaghan, Frank O Flynn, Josh Ahern.
