Busy weekend for Hurling Teams..

This coming weekend will be a busy one for Bride Rovers with our Junior C Hurling team and Our Senior team in action. The Junior team contest the East Cork Championship final against Midleton on Saturday while the Seniors play the REDFM Senior League semi final on Sunday.

JUNIOR C FINAL.

We contest our third Junior C Grade Hurling championship Final; in a row on Saturday afternoon next October the 22nd. In 2014 we lost the final to Russell Rovers while last year we defeated Cobh in the decider. In this years campaign we've had wins over Cobh and Sarsfields. With a management Team of Billy Finnegan, Seamus Buckley, Dave Burke and Jerome O Driscoll the team led by captain Tomas Kearney have impressed on the route to the final. The team is a nice mixture of long-serving players and younger lads who have combined well together. Our final opponents have defeated Fr O Neills and Killeagh to reach the decider. This will  be Midleton's fourth team but as we saw with Sars they have no shortage of skilled hurlers. At the time of writing no definite venue for the game has been announced but once it is confirmed the word will be spread. This will be a tough assignment for our lads and we wish them all the very best, go for it lads and best of luck.

RED FM Senior Hurling League..

We finished top of the table in this years Senior Hurling League with 24 points, we won 12 games and lost 3. Along with Midleton we qualified as semi finalists.  One of the games we lost was a 3 19 to 3 14 defeat to Blackrock earlier in the year. They lost to Erins Own in the SHC just 24 hours after we were beaten by Douglas. Last weekend Blackrock had a 1 15 to 1  12 win over St. Finbarrs in their quarter final game.  The game is fixed for Riverstown at 12 noon on Sunday, best of luck lads.

Under 16's reach Final.

Our u 16 football team played Granard Gaels (Liscarroll/Churchtown) in the County semi final at Killavullen on Saturday last. It was closely contested game with fortunes swinging both ways.  We had plenty possession early on but found scores hard to come by. Granard Gaels got on top midway through the half but we hit back to lead by a point at the break. The Gaels took over completely at the start of the second half and kicked three points in a row to go two ahead. Our lads fought back to level before a Cian Hogan put us one ahead. Then a move involving seven players ended with a goal from Conor Barry. In the closing stages the North Cork side got a point to leave just a goal between the sides. For the last five minutes it was 'all hands on deck' as we defended ferociously.   Granard Gaels got two frees and a 45, all of which were 'in around the house' with twenty six players up in front of our goal. They tried for an equalizing goal but our defence held out for a 3 6 to 2 9 win after a gutsy display.   Ben Hogan, John o Sullivan,  Matthew Quinn, Peter O Leary,  Ruairi O Sullivan,  Eoin Roche,  Patrick O Flynn,  Kieran Kearney,  Conleith Ryan ,  Brian Roche, Jordan Mannix, Tom Murray , Griffin Keeney o Sullivan, Cian Hogan, Conor Barry subs Seamus Ahern , Sean Knox , Michael Quinlan , Oisin Roche

Our Final opponents are not yet known as Urhan must play Aghinagh in the second semi final.

Well done Pa

On last Sunday Club Referee Pa O Driscoll took charge of the County Intermediate Football Final between Bandon and Rockchapel in Pairc Ui Rinn. The game went well with Bandon doing the double. Well done  to Pa and his team of officials

Johnny Barry RIP.

One of our hurling heroes in the club died at the weekend. Johnny Barry was a member of our Junior Hurling teams in the 1966 to 1975 era when we played ina  total of 8 East Cork Finals. A very talented hurler Johnny was a lethal forward and his goal scoring prowess was legendary. When a goal was needed invariably Johnny Barry was on hand to raise the green flag. In those glorious seasons of 1968 and 1969 Johnny was an ever present figure on the A grade team. In 1975 along with his brother Connie he won an East Cork B Grade title  on a team captained by his cousin Pat O Connor. Our Club President. He was back on the A grade team again in 76 and 77 before retiring. He loved the game and had a real divil-may-care attitude, treating victory and defeat in the same manner. Johnny was real character, chirpy in nature and always smiling. We extend our deepest sympathy to Caroline, Connie and all his relations. May he rest in peace.
