Paddy Mannix RIP...

One of the great Bride Rovers stalwarts, Paddy Mannix of Bartlemy died on Saturday last in his 85th year. Born in 1931 in a house next door to the Bartlemy band-room where the Bride Rovers Club was formed in 1928 Paddy Mannix was involved in the GAA in the parish all his life especially as an administrator. The late 1940's were lean times for the Rovers and in 1950 the Club didn't field in any competition. The following year a group of enthusiasts came together in Bartlemy to restart a club. The Mannix family were ardent supporters of the new Club- Paddy's father Tom was appointed a juvenile selector while paddy was a committee member. He took over as Club Secretary in 1954 and thankfully the Minute book of that era was carefully minded by Paddy and Bridie Mannix and handed over to the in the 1990's. After another period of inactivity in the early 1960's a meeting was held in Bartlemy Hall in December 1964 to get the Bride Rovers Club back on the road. At this meeting Paddy Mannix was elected vice chairman  -a position he held for four years. During the  'golden era' 1960's Paddy was a selector on various teams including the 1969 East Cork Junior Hurling Championship winning side. He always remained a great supporter of the Club during bad and good times. Along with his wife Bridie he reared a large family in Bartlemy and was so proud to see his sons and in more recent times play with Bride Rovers and of course his grandson Adrian a Kilworth, Avondhu and Cork player. He worked for 38 years for Castlelyons Creamery collecting milk from farms. His great friend and neighbour in Bartlemy Dave Ryan had a similar occupation and both were prominent figures on the sideline with the Rovers.  After his retirement in 1989 he attended practically every Bride Rovers game from under 12 up to adult level.   He was so proud of the achievements of Seanie Barry and Brian Murphy and Brendan Walsh in winning All Ireland medals. When Bride Rovers won the County Junior and Intermediate titles and went up to Senior ranks there was no prouder man in the parish than Paddy Mannix. A few years back he was elected Club Vice President. In December 2014 Paddy was the only surviving Officer from 1964 when the Club marked fifty years since it's reformation. He continued right til the end as a great supporter and last October was out at his gate to welcome the local National School team back after winning the Sciath na Scoil title in Cork. On behalf of everyone in the Bride Rovers Club we extend our deepest sympathy to Bridie and all the family. Paddy was a great family man and a mighty Bride Rovers man. May he rest in peace.

 WEEKLY CLUB LOTTO.

 The numbers  drawn on Tuesday February 16th for a jackpot of €2200 were 22 24 25 27. There was no Jackpot  winner. The Jackpot for Tuesday February 23rd was  €2400. Last weeks winners of  €30 were  Aidan Hayes, Ava, Cormac & Cathal Barry Knocknaboola, Tom Courtney, John Sheehan WGH, Ger Butterworth. Tickets are just €2 and are available from club members and in local business outlets and online at locallotto.ie

SENIOR HURLING.

Unfortunately the bad weather of last week caused the cancellation of the Tony Walsh Memorial Hurling Tournament on Saturday last. It was a major disappointment to all as the Tournament was an outstanding success last year and gave a great start to the playing season. We hope to reschedule the Tournament at a later date. As we had been drawn to play Tallow in the Tournament semi final and both teams wanted a game the two Clubs agreed to play a challenge game. A pitch was secured at the Waterford Institute of Technology and the game went ahead there. Using a panel of 28 players we had a good win after a competitive game. Thanks to WIT for the use of their pitch.

Under 21 Football Championship.

It's only February but Championship time has come already. On next Saturday afternoon we play in Erins Own in the first round of the East Cork under 21 Football championship.  The game id fixed for 3 0 clock but at the time of writing no venue had been fixed. Best of luck lads, go for it.

RED FM Senior Hurling League.

The 2016 RED FM Cork County Senior Hurling League was launched lately. Daniel Lane and Cian O Connor represented Bride Rovers at the launch in Cork. On Sunday next we play our opening game in the League. We face Ballymartle in Pairc na Bride at 12 noon.

SPORTS PREDICTION QUIZ

The Sports Prediction Quiz is planned to be our major fundraiser planned by the Club in 2016 and the Tickets are now on sale.

As you are all aware the club incurs a lot of expenses for the up keep of facilities which include 3 playing pitches, 2 astro-turf facilities, a gym and dressing rooms. We also continue to try and improve the facilities for our players, mentors and supporters. There was little fundraising done by the club in 2015 as there were many other very worthy fundraisers taking place in the community. The target for the club is to sell 600 Sports Prediction Quiz Sheets, this will require a huge effort by everyone in the club. Your help in selling these would be greatly appreciated. The Sports Prediction Quiz will hopefully create great excitement around the club over the next 8 months.

How it works is that we have chosen 24 sporting events that are taking place from March to October, its up to you to choose from the 5 options listed who you think is going to win each event, the more of an 'outsider' you choose the more points that you receive. The winner at the end is the person who has the most accumulated points total.  

Entry is €10 per ticket and are widely available from any club officer or player.

Prizes : 1st: €500, 2nd: €200, 3rd: €100, 4th: €50, 5th: €50. €1000 bonus if you get all 24 questions correct. 

Cards must be returned to any club officer or player by Sunday March 13th. 

Results will be posted here on www.briderovers.ie on the last Sunday of every month.

Membership Fees for 2016.

Club Membership Fees for the 2016 season are now due. The fee for Adult Players is €100. For Student Players and non playing ordinary Club members the fee is  €50. For OAP's the fee is €20.  Membership Fees can be paid to the Club Treasurer or any Club Officer or Team mentors. If anyone wants to pay the membership fee in two instalments or more  arrangements can be made to facilitate this.

CAR BOOT SALE.

The first Car Boot Sale for 2016 is fixed for Sunday week. Volunteers are needed for gate duty and stewarding and also for the preparation on Saturday morning. If you can give an hour or two on either day please contact any Club Officer.
