Official Opening..
Last Friday night was a major milestone in the history of the Club when our new Astro Turf complex was blessed and opened. Despite the appalling weather conditions there was a great turnout of young and old. Chairman Billy Finnegan opened the proceedings with words of welcome to all present including Frs Neilius O Donnell, Fr Gus O Driscoll, Gerard Lane, Dick Fitzgerald, Gerry O Sullivan and Seanie Barry from Cavanaghs of Fermoy. Billy outlined the history of our different development phases over the last five years. He pointed out that we need extra playing pitches to cater for all the club teams. In the meantime we have to press ahead with [providing the best of facilities for all our players playing hurling, football, camogie and ladies football. He paid special tribute to our own Finance committee and all those who helped us obtain ports Capital Funding. He mentioned especially the generosity of Cavanaghs of Fermoy.
Fr Neilius O Donnell PP emeritus then blessed the complex praying that health and happiness and sporting enjoyment may be facilitated by these superb amenities. Then the Chairman of the Cork County Board Gerard Lane cut the bunting to officially open the Astro Turf playing area. As a Club Member Gerard said it was a great honour for him to be present following in the footsteps of the late Con Murphy and also Christy Cooney who had previously unveiled plaques in the grounds. Gerard spoke on the great work being done by the Club and the importance of catering for all the youth of the parish. He praised the Club members for their hard work and fund raising over the years. Gerard then unveiled a memorial plaque to mark this special night. Gerry O Sullivan the Vice Chairman of the Munster Council then spoke and congratulated the Club on the tremendous strides made over the years. Unfortunately shortly after leaving the club grounds Gerry was involved in a very serious car accident sustaining multiple injuries. He is at present hospitalised in Dublin. Everyone involved with Bride Rovers extends our very best wishes to Gerry for a full and speedy recovery.
Our final speaker on the night was Dick Fitzgerald, Chairman of the East Cork Board who was loud in his praise of the development work being done by the club and the work going on at under age level and in the parish schools.
Overall it was a very special occasion for the Bride Rovers Club, thanks to everyone who helped in any way.
Well Done Fermoy and Dungourney
It was great weekend for our neighbouring Clubs. On Friday night at Pairc Ui Rinn Dungourney made no mistake in the Co JHC Final replay when they easily defeated Cloughduv. It is their first ever Co JHC title though the Club won the Cork Co SHC title on three occasions.
On Saturday afternoon at sunny Pairc Ui Rinn also won their replayed final. A week after a dour 0 7 apiece draw Fermoy kicked I 12 from play - no frees, to win the County IFC title, well done.
