Hosting County JHC on Saturday.

On this coming Saturday September the 19th Pairc na  Bride will host a quarter final game in the Cork County Junior Hurling Championship. The contestants will be Dungourney and Harbour Rovers (Glanworth). Both Clubs won their respective Divisional championships at the weekend. On Saturday night in Cloyne, Dungourney captured their fourth East Cork title when they defeated St. Itas who were appearing in their first ever Final at A grade level. Dungourney have been one of the most consistent Junior Hurling teams in East Cork over the last decade reaching the County Final in 2006 when they lost out to Kilworth.  Harbour Rovers on the other hand are new to this scene. On Sunday afternoon in Castletownroche the hurlers from Glanworth made history by winning the first ever North Cork Junior Grade Hurling title. Harbour Rovers will have fond memories of their last visit to Rathcormac when they defeated Rathpeacon in the County Junior B grade final in 1990, winning by 0 12 to 0 8.  Next Saturday's contest is a quarter final with the winners meeting either Brian Dillons or Ballymartle in the County Semi Final.

The game is fixed for 5.30 so we want as many stewards as possible to be at the pitch as early as possible. With our u 14 hurlers playing the County Final in Ballincollig at 2.30 it will be a hectic afternoon/evening. Please if you can help out it will be greatly appreciated as the fixture should attract a good crowd.

Lotto.

The Lotto jackpot for last Tuesday September the 8th was €6600. The four numbers drawn were 4, 14, 18 & 21 and there was no winner. The winners of €30 each were Betty O Neill Watergrasshill, Deirdre Broderick Monanig, Pat Noel O Connor Scartbarry, Cathal O Callaghan c/o LAYA,  John Murphy Bartlemy.Tickets are just €2 each and can be bought locally or on line at locallotto.ie

Under 14 Final.

Best of  luck to our under 14 hurlers take on Inniscarra  in the Rebel Cork County Championship Final in Ballincollig at 2.30 on Saturday next.  We have already lost to Inniscarra in the East final but had great win over Cuchullians in the County Semi Final since then. Go for it lads.

 Junior C Hurling Cship.

The semi final of the East Cork Junior C Hurling championship against Sarsfields was scheduled to be played this weekend possibly on Sunday night but now it seems likely to go back until the following weekend.

All Ireland Football Final

It's probably the biggest day annually in Irish Sport, the All Ireland football final . This year pits two of the great 'all time' top gaelic football teams Kerry and Dublin. With a crowd of 83,000 present -the biggest in the world at any sporting event on Sunday, and a TV audience of millions on three continents it promises to be a great spectacle. Both teams  have looked unbeatable at different stages during the summer  so it will certainly not be a one sided contest. Looking back the years at All Ireland Football finals we have connections of one kind or another with at least three finals.

1911

In the 1911 final ( played on Jan14th 1912) Cork beat  Antrim by  6 6 to 1  2 -the biggest ever winning margin in a football final. On the winning Cork Panel was Pat Sweeney from Knockaunduff, Rathcormac. Pat was working in Cork city and played football there with the Lees club. He started against Tipperary in Kilmallock in the first round in June when Cork won by 3 3 to 0 1. He was a sub for the remaining games against Waterford, Galway and Antrim. Pat was a cousin of Cork hurling stars Seanie Barry  and Bill Cooper.

1945.

Paddy Cronin from Ballingeary was wing back on the Cork team that beat Tipperary, Kerry, Galway and Cavan to bring the Seam Maguire Cup to Cork for the first time in 1945. A National Teacher Paddy was based in Fermoy, teaching in the CBS, and played Senior Football with Fermoy - winning the County in that same year of 1945. In 1950 paddy came teaching to Bartlemy and lived in the Teachers house in Hightown. He was elected secretary of Bartlemy GAA Club in 1951.

1983.

Dublin beat Galway in the 1983 All Ireland Final. It was an ill tempered, nasty game, Dublin had three players sent off and forever more that winning side became known as 'the dirty dozen'! Wing back on the team was Pat Canavan -he was picked in the same position on the 1983 All Star Football team.  Pat was grandson of Augustine 'Gusty' Canavan who liveed at Mill St. Rathcormac in the early 1900's. Pat played club football with St. Vincents in Dublin.

Mud Run last Sunday

On Sunday last September the 13th a new 'sport' came to the banks of the Bride. The Coolnakilla harriers held a  Mud Run for the Sinead Kearney Fighting Lyme Disease Fund.  The Mud Run consisted  of competing an  exhausting route on land and water. The big emphasis was  on getting down and dirty with mud, glorious mud everywhere. It is a modern craze was truly one of the best sporting events ever held along the Bride Valley. Compliments to the Coolnakilla Harriers committee who had an organisation on the ground last Sunday which was second to none.  Voluntary Stewards did a fantastic job running the event so smoothly. The craic was simply mighty, well done to the Coolnakillas on a brilliant undertaking.
