Under 21 Hurlers Win..
In the 1960's, 70's and 80's the rivalry between St. Catherines and Bride Rovers was intense. At Junior B and Junior A East Cork Championship level the clubs met on many occasions. They were great games and the excitement they engendered was huge. For the week before and the week after the talk at the Creamery in Castlelyons would be all about the game. People who frequented the Creamery on an almost daily basis could be absent for two or three weeks if the result was not favourable! Ah yes that's what tradition is all about. In recent decades the Clubs have not met as often due the fact that Catherines were elevated to Intermediate and then Senior while we were junior until 1998. Anyway that was the backdrop to the latest episode of championship encounters between the clubs at sunny Castlelyons on Monday evening last when the under 21 teams of both parishes lined out. On a perfect pitch for hurling both sides took to the task from the off. St. Catherines played downfield towards the National School and had the aid of a slight breeze. We hit two wides early on before Catherines had the first point of the contest. We levelled matters and then Jamie Buckley hit a goal to put us ahead Points from Colm Power, DJ Cahill and William Finnegan gave us a 1 3 to 0 3 lead after the first quarter. With William showing unerring accuracy from frees we pushed on to lead by 1 7 to 0 5. Our half back line of Buckley, Walsh and Macak was the launching pad for many attacks and from one of these Sean Cotter found the net for our second goal. We were ahead by 2 7 to 0 5 at the break, but for a succession of wides our lead could have been greater. Both teams traded a pair of points apiece in the early minutes of the second half to leave it 2 9 to 0 7. Points from Jakub and Cian pushed us 2 11 to 0 8 ahead. A six point lead seemed good enough though we were still striking some bad wides. Then in a minute things changed quickly. Catherines scored a goal and a point and now it was game on. Frank made a fantastic save as the pressure came on. In fairness our defence overall competed well as the game was there for the taking. A great goal from Liam O Leary was the decisive score and we finished strongly to win on a final scoreline of
