Beaten by the Glen..

Last Saturday evening in Pairc Ui Rinn our aspirations for winning the Cork County Senior Hurling Championship for 2015 ended.  We were defeated by Glen Rovers by a margin of six points. In truth it could have been more but for a late goal from Daniel Dooley which brought the final scoreline  to Glen Rovers 3 16 Bride Rovers 3  10. It was a strange game as we failed to score for the first quarter of an hour in each half allowing the Glen to score 1 3 and 1 5 without reply in those periods of dominance. From a disastrous start we recovered well. A great goal from Michael Collins helped us into a 1 7 to 1 5 coming up to the break but the Glen had the final say with a point to leave us ahead by a single score at half time. We were in a great position considering that our first score didn't come until the sixteenth minute. Brendan Walsh made a mighty run before being fouled. Barry pointed the free. Points from Fergus Collins and Stephen Glasgow had our supporters in good voice. After Barry's goal attempt from a penalty was saved Michael's goal gave us the lead. We had the advantage of the slight breeze in the first half but it wasn't a major factor in the game. One could say that the short whistle came at the wrong time for us as we had begun to dominate the game. All over the pitch our players had got in top after the slow start. Unfortunately we never kicked on in the second half. The Glen went from being a point down to seven ahead and we were really chasing the game after that. In fairness the lads did thunder back in the last quarter. Points from Barry and Cian O Connor narrowed the margin somewhat. Then with ten minutes to go Brian Murphy, Daniel Dooley  and Michael Collins did a lot of the spadework for substitute James Murphy to score a great goal - 2  11 to 2  9 now and we were really back in the game. However it was Glen Rovers who finished strongest. They scored a further 1 5 while our only scores were a pointed free from Barry and stoppage time goal from Daniel Dooley to bring out tally to 3 10. It was a terribly disappointing result and display. We had a great build up of over two months, training had gone well. Once more our failing of not scoring points freely caught us. We scored just 5 from play, the Glen 11. The Glen backs were very tight marking and gave little space to our forwards.

Well done to each and every player for your efforts in the game and all season long. We started with the Tony Walsh Tournament in the spring and a lot of innovative ideas were put into place by Joe Delaney, Daniel and William and the whole backroom  team. Unfortunately we are out of 'first team' hurling and football championship action and it's only the first week of August. In recent times we've had plenty September and October campaigns but not this year. Thanks to our grea6t band of loyal supporters who travelled to Cork on Saturday, your support is greatly appreciated by the Club and the team.

Junior Hurling.

Our East Cork Junior Hurling championship campaign came to a very unsatisfactory end. Having lost to St Catherines and then defeated Killeagh we were due to play Midleton . This game was eventually fixed for 7pm on last Sunday night. Because of the unavailability of several players we knew we could not field a team at that time. We approached Midleton and offered six alternative dated including 12 noon on Sunday last but Midleton were uncooperative in regards any date we suggested and so we were ruled out of the competition. This is an awful situation because our Junior hurlers have trained as hard as the senior team. We are still involved in the Junior League but the championship is the main competition.  Normally in East Cork there is a good understanding between clubs especially when it comes to fixtures problems but not on this occasion. The East Cork Board facilitated us ii every way for a re-fixture if agreement was reached between the two clubs but this was not forthcoming.

East Cork U21 Hurling.

On Sunday next August the 9th we are fixed to play St Catherines in the East Cork u21 Hurling championship. There is a doubt over this fixture as the St Catherines v Dungourney JAHC game was abandoned due to weather and fading light last Sunday night and may be refixed for the weekend. If it is our u 21 game will go off.

Lotto.

The weekly Club Lotto Jackpot for Tuesday July 28th was €5400. The four numbers drawn were  9, 20, 22 and 25 and there was no winner. The winners of €30 each were Pat O Connor Scartbarry, Nigel Murphy Castlemagner, Pat Pyne, Breda Campbell, Katie Connor Monanig. The Jackpot for last Tuesday August 4th was €5600.

Scrap Metal collection.

The Club is still accepting all types of scrap metal. The Scrap collection is part of our ongoing fundraising campaign. We have more projects in the pipeline all the time so finance is always vital. Any items of scrap metal are acceptable from horseshoes to horseboxes, from a needle to an anchor - nothing is too big or too small. If you have scrap just ring 087 9538077.
