Hectic Weekend..
It was really hectic weekend of activity in the Club and Parish last weekend. Our Junior Hurlers were in championship action and a full programme of fundraising events also took place involving Club players and members. The hurlers put up a brave display but lack of scoring cost us dearly against St. Catherines. Despite  the rain on Sunday night a fine crowd gathered in Pairc na Bride in the evening to see the stars of 1993 and 2003 play a challenge game.

Junior Hurling C.ship.
St Catherines 2 16 Bride Rovers 1  9.

On a warm Sunday afternoon of the longest day of the year a fine crowd gathered in Castlelyons for this first round Junior  A Grade Hurling tie. In truth we played second fiddle from the start. The accuracy of William Finnegan from placed balls kept us in touch but the Saints were always well on top with Shane Kearney on form with his free taking. It took us fifteen minutes to register our first point from William, after we had three wide's early on. St Catherines were able to take their scores easier than us and led by 1  10 to  0  5 at halftime. In the second half we came much more into the game and when Jason Mannix was pulled down we were awarded a penalty. William sent the sliotar to the net and followed up with another point to leave just 4 in it, 1  10 to 1  6. We failed to build on this momentum and scored just two more points to our tally. St Catherines added a further 1  6 to win by 2 16 to 1  9.  It was always going to be a hard task to defeat a 'first' team in the opening round of the championship and St Catherines competed in the Intermediate grade up until last year. Our lads did well enough but we needed a spread of scorers. We are still in this championship of course. The remaining first round games are on this weekend. When all the results are known a draw will be made amongst the first round losers. Our next game could be on Friday 3rd or Saturday the 4th of July.
Team and scorers; Alan O Keeffe, Tadgh O Sullivan, Jakub Macak, Brian Collins, Barry Collins, James Murphy (Capt.), Jim O Connor, Damien Buckley, Liam Forde (0 1), William Finnegan (1 7), Shane O Connor, Stephen Pratt, Colm Power, Barry Murphy, Jason Mannix. Subs DJ Cahill (0 1), Sean O Brien.

Sinead Shine Fundraiser.(www.sineadshines.org)
A mist of rain in no way dampened the enthusiasm and sense of fun that prevailed Pairc na Bride on Sunday evening when the Club hosted activities for the Sinead Kearney Lyme Disease Treatment Fund. It was a wonderful community coming together and a great occasion for Bride Rovers. Highlight of the evening for everyone was the challenge game between the 1993 Team and the 2003 Team. It was simply great fun and both teams entered into the occasion in a superb manner. In the weeks running up to the game there was a lot of slagging and banter between the two 'panels' with tough decisions having to be made by a few players who featured on both teams. It was with a sense of nostalgia and pride too that both teams lined up behind the Castlelyons Pipe band and marched on to the field. It was great to see so many former greats being led out by Tom Mulcahy and Sean Ryan.  After a minutes silence was observed for the Berkley victims the band struck up Amhrain na bhFiann -it could have been Croke Park or Pairc Ui Chaoimh for the atmosphere was just as good. Referee James Bermingham played by the Old, New and What's This  Rules with two quarters of ten minutes and a half of a quarter of an hour. It was great fun with the 2003 team winning by a narrow margin though the 1993 team felt there should have been at least nine minutes of time added on for stoppages, disputes, falls and collisions . Back in 1993 our teams gave the Club a great fillip. We hadn’t won an   adult hurling championship in East Cork since the B Grade win of 1975 when current Club President Pat O Connor captained the side. No football championship title had been captured since Tom Kearney's team in 1981. To win the Junior B Grade Double in 1993 was a huge step forward for the Club. Who would have thought that December Sunday in Lisgoold that a decade later Sean Ryan would lead us to win a County Intermediate Title? In between we won the East Cork and County Junior titles in 1998.
Before that our heroes and iconic figures were the men of the 1930's and 1960's but from 1993 on a new era opened up for the Club. It was just mighty to see those great hurlers on the field last Sunday night. Thanks to each and every one of the [players who turned out and entered into the great spirit of the fundraising. Well done especially to Barry and James Murphy who lined out earlier in the day with thee Junior team in Castlelyons. Thanks to all who helped organise the sideshows, mini games, obstacle course, cooking, stewarding, car parking and all the other jobs done on the night. Thanks to Ballyhooly GAA Club for the set of jerseys. It was great occasion and a wonderful financial success also. Pictures of the night can be seen on the Bride Rovers website www.briderovers.ie and also on wwwsineadshines.org

Cork will have to travel to Wexford Park on the evening of American Independence Day Saturday week July 4th for the first round of the All Ireland Senior Hurling Qualifiers. It will be a tough game for Brian Murphy and his Rebel colleagues and we wish them the very best.

DEATH OF A LEGEND.
It was with a great sense of sadness that the death of Tipperary hurling legend Jimmy Dole was announced on Monday last. I was lucky to see him in the latter end of his career with Tipp in the early 70's and even then the flashes of genius were still there. A very private man he truly was one of the greatest. May he rest in peace.
