 Super Hurling Weekend..

It promises to be an action packed weekend coming up with hurling championship action and a trip down memory lane plus a huge range of activities in the Parish. It's midsummer at last and Sunday is the longest day of the year and it is great to have so much going on. Our first round win against Bishopstown in the Senior Hurling Championship has really changed our summer. With the last seven years around this time we'd be either getting ready for a 'back-door' game in the championship or awaiting the draw to see who we could be meeting next. The win has given us breathing space with the pressure  of former years absent.  The Club and indeed the whole community have got massively involved in the 'Help Sinead Shine in spite of Lyme' campaign and this weekend is jam packed full of events. It is just fantastic to see the response to the fund raising campaign as thirty different events go ahead. On Sunday evening next Pairc na Bride will be a hive of activity with a range of different fun things  to do. Highlight of the evening will be a hurling game between our 1993  and 2003 Hurling teams. These were the two teams that changed the history of the club along with the 1998 side. In 1993 we won the East Cork Junior B grade double with the hurlers led by Tom Mulcahy. Ten years later Sean Ryan led the Intermediate team to County glory.  Earlier in the day on Sunday we face St. Catherines in the first round of the East Cork Junior Hurling Championship so it will be a hectic day.

JUNIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP.

It will be like a return to the 60's and 70's on Sunday afternoon in Castlelyons when we face St. Catherines in the first round of the East Cork JHC. Back then a Rovers v Saints meeting always drew a huge crowd whether the game was played in Carrigtwohill, Midleton or Castlelyons. That rivalry was legendary and next Sundays game should draw a fine crowd to Pairc Peadar Ui Laoighaire at 3.30. Forty and fifty years ago both clubs were in the same grade -we were B grade together and participated at A grade together also. The scenario has changed now as this will be our second team whereas St Catherines having been relegated from Intermediate last year will field their first team. On all known form a Club's first team should nearly always beat a 'second string'  but anything can happen in hurling. In our first round Senior win over Bishopstown we used twenty players so this will make our task on Sunday even more difficult. The team has prepared well with some good League wins but we are in Division 2 of the League. Last week the team had two games.

Our first outing  was  on Sunday 7th, having returned from the Cork and Waterford game in Thurles, the Junior Hurlers took to the field to take on the Senior Team and following an extremely tough and hard hours hurling our Junior went down on a scoreline of 3.14 to 3.12, this was a great work out for the team. Two days later we travelled to Midleton for a league game with a slightly depleted team but we still showed well in the first-half were just 2 points behind on a score of 0.8 to 0.6. Tired legs after the second game in forty eight hours  showed in the second half and were well beaten by 1.16 to 0.11.

Panel on the night:  Alan O'Keeffe, Tadgh O'Sullivan, Jacab Makau, Podge Noonan, Barry Collins, James Murphy, Jim O'Connor, Damien Buckley, Stephen Pratt, William Finnegan, Shane O'Connor, Jason Mannix, Gavin Quill, Liam Forde, Colm Power, Barry Murphy, Brian Collins, Sean Cotter.

No doubt the team will give everything on Sunday in search of a win , go for it lads.

EAST CORK JHL DIVISON 3

Our third XV  travelled to Watergrasshill on the 11th for their first outing of the season. Our opposition was the 'Hills second  string who were having their third outing and this showed in the first 20 minutes as we were definitely ring-rusty. However with some good play we found ourselves behind by just seven points, 1.11 to 1.4 at half-time. A very spirited display in the 2nd half saw us run out losers by 2.20 to 3.11. This team will do well going forward if they decide to turn up for training in the weeks ahead and put in plenty hours practise

Panel on the night:  Dan Lane, Sean Cotter, Tomas Kearney, Jack Connor, Pa O'Driscoll, Pat Walsh, Sean O'Brien, Gavin O'Flynn, Stephen Boyce, Dave Burke, Terry Broderick Richie Cahill, Colm Howard, Donal Ryan, Cian Howard, James Buckley, Dylan Browne.

FIXTURE Junior A Grade Hurling Championship Bride Rovers v St. Catherines in Castlelyons on Sunday June 21st at 3.30.

RED FM County Senior Hurling League.

On last Friday night we travelled to Togher to take on the Barrs in a Senior League game. We were short a few regulars but even allowing for this we were well beaten by the home side. They were far sharper and scored a goal and 24 points to our tally of 14 points. Team panel;

DJ Cahill, Donncha Carr, Fergus Collins, Michael Collins, Daniel Dooley, William Finnegan, Liam Forde, Frank Hogan, Mike Kearney, Shane Kearney, Mike Liddane, Jason Mannix, Brian Murphy, Shane O' Connor, Brendan O' Driscoll, Jerome O' Driscoll, Jason Pratt, Ryan Prendergast, Sean Ryan, Shane Walsh.
