Footballers Progress in Championship..
Our Junior A Football team progressed to the quarter final of the East Cork Championship last weekend. We defeated Lisgoold in the first round a month ago. Then when the draws for the 'backdoor' winners were made we were paired against Lisgoold once more after they defeated Cobh. So the repeat of the first round was fixed for Caherlag on Saturday afternoon last. We had just sixteen players on duty because of work commitments and injuries. It was shame that several players did not turn out on the day but credit to the team that took the field. Like the game in Ballynoe in Round One it was Lisgoold who got the better start with two early points. Our defence soon came to grips with the Lisgoold attack and overall our teamwork improved. After a quarter of an hour Jason Mannix scored a peach of a goal when his curling kick found the net. A point followed from Jason Pratt and we were up 1 1 to 0 2 . Lisgoold scored two points but three frees in a row from William Finnegan and one from Jason Pratt helped us to a 1 5 to 0 4 lead. It was obvious in the first half that the pace and fitness of our young side was causing problems for Lisgoold. The second half was a ding dong struggle for supremacy as we battled the odds. Reduced to thirteen men for double yellow cards our backs were certainly to the wall. Sensing victory Lisgoold scored two points, one from a free to narrow the gap to two points. Mike Kearney switched to defence for the last quarter and used all his experience to steady the team. Under savage pressure our lads fought for every ball in what was one our best ever football championship wins. Awarded a penalty Jason Pratt duly converted to give us a great boost. With the numerical advantage Lisgoold came forward in waves but we held firm. After a great passing movement Cian O Connor made great headway and scored our third goal to seal a brilliant win. The final score was Bride Rovers 3 6 Lisgoold 0 7. Given all the circumstances surrounding this game it was great result. The team showed great character and spirit and football skills second to none. Well done to each and every player of the sixteen who took part in this great victory.
