Great Win For Footballers..
For the first time since 2012 we recorded a victory in the East Cork Junior A Grade Football championship. We had participated in the B grade championship last year and by winning that competition we were back in the A Grade this year. Not having had the benefit of participating in the Football league this year our preparations for this tie were confined to a few training sessions under Michael Carey with Vincent and Pat on the line. So it was with a sense of hope rather than confidence that we travelled to Ballynoe on Saturday last to take on Lisgoold in the first round. Lisgoold only lost the 2013 championship Final after a replay with Glenbower Rovers ( in Pairc na Bride) and last year Lisgoold won Division 1 of the East Cork JFL. To say Lisgoold were hot favourites would be an understatement.
We started with a youthful line-up following the retirement of many great Rovers servants after years of dedicated service to football in the club. We were also short four more players due to injury, travel and family commitments.
The Rovers had the advantage of playing with the stiff breeze to their backs for the first half but it was Lisgoold who began well and had four points to show for their efforts in the opening fifteen minutes with just one in reply from Barry Johnson. Amazingly this was to be the end of the scoring for Lisgoold as theRovers now settle d into the task in hand racking up two goals and three points before the half time whistle to leave the score at 2-04 to 0-04 at the break. The goals came from Ryan Prendergast and William Finnegan and the points from Barry Johnson, Ryan Prendergast and a super individual effort from DJ Cahill to leave us with a six point interval advantage. Lisgoold came out of the traps with renewed purpose at the start of the second half however the work rate and organisation in our defence saw them repel attack after attack for the first ten minutes with no score conceded. From this resolute defending the counter attack came and with the full forward line in goal scoring form the ball was worked to Barry Johnson for his first of two second half goals. The second came shortly after when the Lisgoold keeper took down the in-rushing Cian O’Connor and Barry duly slotted the ball to the net. Lisgoold showed great determination to get back into the game and were rewarded with a penalty heading into the last quarter. Having made some magnificent saves over the previous 45 minutes, this was to be a test of Frank Hogan that he was to deliver on with a brilliant save and setting up a counterattack from which the Rovers were to slot over a point and put the result beyond doubt. While this was a fantastic result for the club, the lads will realise that there are going to be much tougher tests ahead and there can be no let-up in the work rate or determination if they are to progress in this competition. For now they can take great confidence from what was a superb performance on Saturday last.
The team and scorers on Saturday were: Frank Hogan, Jacob Macak, Brennie O’Driscoll (capt.), Tadhg O’Sullivan, Shane Kearney, Daniel Dooley, Steven Pratt, Ryan Prendergast (1-01), Jason Pratt, Jason Mannix, James Murphy (0-01), Barry Johnston (2-02), DJ Cahill (0-01), William Finnegan (1-0) and Cian O’Connor (0-01). Subs used: Alan O’Keefe, Cian Howard, Podge Noonan and Shane O’Connor.
This was our first A Grade Football win since March 23 rd 2012 when we defeated Aghada in Carrigtwohill under lights on a scoreline of Bride Rovers 2-7 Aghada 0-10
The team and scorers that night were 1. Richie Cahill. 2. Jim O'Connor 3. Brennie O'Driscoll 4. Trevor Moloney 5. Shane Kearney 6. Liam Forde 7. Jason Pratt 8. Michael Kearney, 9.Sean Ryan 10. Colm O'Keeffe (0-2) 11. Brendan Walsh (0-1) 12. Terry Broderick (0-1) 13. Barry Johnson (0-3 (2 45s)) 14. Jerome O'Driscoll 15. Alan O'Keeffe (1-0).
Incidentally our first ever game in the East Cork Junior A Grade Football championship was back in 1933. We drew with Youghal on a scoreline of 1 goal apiece! The replay was in Midleton on April the 30th when Youghal won by four points -1 5 to 0 4. A newspaper report of the game stated that 'For the losers an outstanding player was McDwyer and it was mainly due to his efforts that the Youghal combination had their forward line broken up on several occasions' Eighty two years later and we still don't know who McDwyer was!

Cork V Laois on Monday
On next Monday, Easter Monday the senior hurling teams of Cork and Laois will meet in a challenge game at Ballacolla in Laois. Last weekend Cork hurlers qualified to meet Dublin in the NHL semi final while the men from the O Moore county preserved their Division 1B status for the coming year by defeating Antrim. Next Monday's game is more than just the run of the mill challenge game. It is part of the Laois 1915/2015 celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of Laois winning the All Ireland Senior Hurling title just a century ago. In that final played in October 1915 the Laois men defeated Cork by 6 2 to 4 1. The Leesiders were captained by Con Sheehan of Redmonds(Cork SHC champions in 1914) The Cork team included great hurlers like larry Flaherty and Sean Og Murphy of Blackrock and Jimmy Kennedy of Carrig, The Laois hurlers were trained by Pat Lee, the Station Master in Ballybrophy train station. Pat was a native of Bartlemy village -the Lee house was where the hall now stands, He had played hurling and football with the 'old' teams in the parish in the 1880's. Clare had defeated Laois in the 1914 final 'Drug' Walsh a top class Kilkenny hurler of the time and Pat lee got involved for 1915 and ultimate success came their way. A few weeks ago the Centenary Events kicked off in Laois with an event in Ballygeehan -they were the Laois Co Champions in 1914 and so had the 'picking' of the team for 1915. Sister Carina Lee, Limerick a grand-daughter of Pat Lee and Nellie and Tess Cotter(nee Ahern) grand nieces of Pat Lee along with Gerard Lane Cork GAA Chairman and John Arnold Bride Rovers PRO attended. (Pictured above) Amongst the speakers on the night were former GAA President Liam O Neill, John Finlay, Centenary Committee Chairman and Ger Lane. Liam O Neill pointed out that the 'hurling area' of Co Laois has a total population of just over 18,000 -some Cork City Clubs have a greater population base! Details of next Monday's game at 2.30 in Ballacolla were announced and the publication of a book on the 1915 All Ireland is also planned. No Scór Joy.
At the Eire Og GAA Club pavilion on Saturday night last our Leiriu cast of John, Jonathon and Mossy took part in the Munster Senior Scor Final. Everything went very well on the night and we had no complaints about the result as Fossa from kery were worthy winners. Boherbue (set dancing) were the only Cork winners on the night. Still to end up with East Cork and County Cups isn't too bad. The Bride Rovers Club will still have an involvement in All Ireland Scor Final day in Dublin's City West at the end of April. Orla Arnold has been appointed to set and ask the Question in the Table Quiz Final which will feature the champions of the 32 counties.

The Tweets and Twitters have been going well all year. So many people at home and abroad are now very hi-tech when it comes to keeping in touch with the activities of the Bride Rovers Club. The online editions of newspapers are growing in popularity. Meanwhile you can follow the Club on twitter at twitter @BrideRoversGAA or on our own website at www.briderovers.ie Any news items or general items of interest are very welcome for inclusion and should be sent to Gerard Lane. Please inform family members, relations and friends of Bride Rovers about the ways and means of keeping in contact with the Club. Christmas time is when we all think of those away abroad in a special way so tell them all about how to keep in touch with the Club at home and how they can still support the Club lotto online. Volunteers.
We are always seeking new players from four years and upwards and of course older players who may have played with other clubs and are now living in the parish are more than welcome to join the Bride Rovers Club. People who never played the games are encouraged to join too as we have a role for everyone. Maybe your talent is in gardening or landscaping, in IT or fundraising, in catering, cleaning, flag-making or any other of the many tasks that have to be undertaken in a busy GAA Club. Some people are afraid if they 'join up' they will be overburdened but don’t worry on that score. If you want to give an hour a week or an hour a month to the Bride Rovers Club that contribution will be very much appreciated and respected. They say 'many hands make light work' and in the case of a GAA Club it is really the truth. Now that the time has changed many people will be out and about and giving a little time to your Local Club is a very rewarding experience. If you want further information on what you could do ring 087 9538077.
