We are in the new Year of 2015 but on Saturday night we recall the good days of last This year we join with the ladies Football and Camogie Club for a joint victory Social. We will just have a short journey for the celebrations as for the second year in a row we travel to the Corrin Event Centre. We didn't win the County Senior Hurling championship last year as we had hoped to do but we gave some stirring performances in the Senior grade. Our Junior Hurlers played well also and our third team, the Junior C Hurling team reached the East Cork final, losing narrowly to Russell Rovers in the decider in Dungourney. Sucess came our way from an unexpected source. Early in the year our results in Junior Football didn't indicate any likely victories with the 'big ball'. We did get our act together and had an extended run in the open draw County B Grade Football championship- reaching the semi-final only to lose to Kilmeen. The East Cork Junior B Grade Football championship was run off in the autumn but when our first round game v Cloyne was fixed for a Saturday in early October we had a major crisis. Over half of the team panel were going away to a long planned social event in the Kingdom. It seemed as though we might not be able to field a team but fair play to our lads, in the club's hour of need they responded. Fielding a side that included many players who had not played football earlier in the season we had a great win over Cloyne. After that we defeated Russell Rovers and Glenville to qualify for the East Cork Final. our opponents were County Champions and near neighbours, Castlelyons. The Final was played in Ballynoe. We started well but fell behind and for most of the second half Castlelyons enjoyed a four point lead. Our lads kept at their task and point by point we clawed our way back into the game and went ahead and held on to win a brilliant victory. Our ladies section had a brilliant year with East Cork Cork County and of course All Ireland medals cming to the parish in abundance. Off the playing fields it was a momentous year for the Club. A major fundraising push was made during the year with a scrap collection in the spring and a Night at the Dogs in the autumn. These were very sucessfull and helped us reaching our target to get our new development underway. The new facility is now taking shape. The Club celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Club's re-formation in 1964 on December the 7th. One week later at the County Convention Gerard Lane was elected Chairman of the Cork County Board. Yes indeed 2014 was a great year for the Rovers. Just a eminder that Tickets for the Social will not be on sale on the night as we have to have numbers cvonfirmed beforehand.
