U16 Ladies Football..

East Cork U16A Championship Semi-Final

Fermoy 3-12   Bride Rovers 5-4

Our U16 ladies footballers put in a tremendous effort last Thursday night when they failed narrowly to overcome Fermoy and reach an East Cork U16A final. Conditions were difficult after a day’s heavy rain but both sides made light of that and served up a great match. Fermoy were strong favourites after a great run in the U16A county championship where they went all the way to the final which was played recently so it was to be expected that they would be well-prepared. Our girls have put in a good effort at training also though and I felt that our fitness levels held up well on the night. Fermoy had early pressure but our backs grouped very well and prevented easy shots at goal, which was a feature all night in fact. Grace Culloty scored an early goal also which settled us down and meant that we were well in touch at half time, only 1-5 to 1-2 behind.

The second half was more high-scoring and Fermoy found it easier to kick points with the aid of the wind. Our defensive setup was still working well though and we always felt we were still in the game as long as goals were not conceded because we enjoyed some dominance at mid-field and our forwards looked quite dangerous. Unfortunately, Fermoy did get through for 2 quick goals which were almost the only lapses in that second hand from a defensive perspective. That left us with a lead to reel in but we quickly regained our shape and took the game to the home side. During this time, we played some of the best football all year and got through for several goals but just fell short at the final whistle.

We wish Fermoy the best of the luck in the final against Aghada. We play Aghada in the U16B league final and this performance will be a confidence-booster but we know that we need to repeat it to have a chance of bringing home the trophy. That league final is scheduled for Wednesday, November 12th at Aghada and details will be in next week’s notes.

Minor Ladies Football

Our minor season ended in unsatisfactory fashion when we were awarded a walkover in the East Cork Minor B Championship final and are 2014 champions at the grade. We would have preferred to have won (or lost) this on the field of play against Midleton but that was not to be unfortunately. Thanks to all the players for their efforts during the year.

We are looking for more volunteers to help out with the running of the club in a few different areas as we head towards 2015. If you are interested in helping to keep everything running by taking a more active role please speak to any of the present officers, call or text 087-2986625, send an email tobrideroversladies@hotmail.com or send a message to Twitter @roversgaa

The next ‘First Friday’ clothes collection will be on Friday, December 5th, at the normal time of 7pm to 7:30pm at Rathcormac Hall.

Don’t forget you can stay in touch day to day with all the latest news on Twitter, @roversgaa,  and on Facebook.
