Well Done Fermoy..

Well done to the Fermoy Intermediate Hurling team on winning the County Final in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Sunday last. It was a superb contest with Fermoy recovering from a bad start to fashion a superb win. Just a point separated the winners from  runners up Charleville at the end  in a fairytale finale. It's been a long tough campaign for Fermoy with two draws and replays thrown in en route to last Sundays victory.  Fermoy, though better known as a football stronghold, has a great hurling tradition and last Sunday's win comes after a decade of nurturing underage talent. There are several local links with the Fermoy side including the winning captain Brian O Sullivan whose paternal roots are in Bartlemy. Paudie Shanahan scored the superb winning point and of course the Shanahan name is always associated with Kilworth. One of our great Bride Rovers stalwarts of the past Dave Ryan would have been smiling on Sunday because of his close family links to the Shanahans. Team trainer Denis Ring has served St. Colmans and Cork hurling teams for many years and his contribution to Fermoy's win was huge.  Well done to everyone involved with the team on a great championship season. The cup for the winners on Sunday was the Paddy Walsh Cup, named after a great Gael from Castlemartyr. Paddy would have been thrilled to see his beloved 'Reds' win the County Junior Hurling championship in the curtain raiser on Sunday - incidentally Paddy's grandmother was from Bartlemy also. Yes indeed the GAA 'family' is huge but we have many, many links here, there and everywhere.

Footballers Advance

At Pairc an t-Athair Peadar O Laoire, Castlelyons on Saturday afternoon last we met Russell Rovers in the quarter final of the East Cork Junior B grade Football championship. Having had a very easy win over Cloyne in the first round the team wasn't really tested but we went into last Saturday's game minus four players due to fairly serious injuries. A great start saw early points from Brendan Walsh, Sean Ryan and Daniel Dooley  before the Shanagarry side had a point from a free. A similar score from a free by Jerome O Driscoll saw us lead by 0  4 to 0 1 after fifteen minutes. With Brenny O Driscoll and Barry Murphy superbly leading our defence we repelled an amount of pressure. We should have been well ahead but for some wayward shooting. Points from Jerome and Brendan stretched our half time lead to double scores - 6 points to 3.

The crucial score of the match came straight after the restart. A great three man move ended with Jerome kicking a vital goal to put us 1 6 to 0 3 ahead. This gave  us a great boost and two pointed frees from Barry Johnson put daylight between the sides. Russell  Rovers then came strongly into the contest. They scored four points in a row to helve the deficit to just four, 1  8 to 0  7. In fairness our lads saw the danger and took over for the last quarter of the game. With defence and midfield well on top we kicked seven points - one each from Jerome and Brendan, two from Barry and three superb scores from Terry Broderick.  These scores put us in a great position and though our backline came under fierce pressure as Russell Rovers sought goals, we went on to win by 1  15 to 0  10. It was a good performance but tougher tests are to    come.

This win puts the team into the semi final where the opposition will be Lisgoold, Carrigtwohill or Glenville. After losing to Aghada's third team last year we cannot be complacent as all the teams left are strong football sides. The likely date for the semi final will be the weekend after next. On the other side of the draw County Champions Castlelyons await the winners of Youghal and Carrignavar.

 Scór Na n-Og.

The East Cork- Imokilly Division, of the GAA's talent competition at under 17 level Scor na n-0g will take place on  November the 14th next. Entry is open to boys and girls under the age of 17 years on January 1st 2015.  All those interested are asked to give their names to Mossy O Sullivan before November the 7th.

Weekly Club Lotto

The numbers drawn on Tuesday October the 21st for a Jackpot of €5200 were 17, 20,21& 25 and there was no winner. The €30 winners were Ger Crowley Scartbarry, Buckley family Glenagoul,  Clodagh Fitzgerald Shanowen,  Sinead O Driscoll Shanowen and Owen O Flynn Australia. Jackpot for Tuesday October 28th was €5400.

Cork GAA members Draw

The September and October Draws in the new Cork GAA Members Draw take place on this coming Friday night. Tickets are still available for this draw at €10 a month or €100 for the years with hundreds of valuable prizes on offer. Contact any Club Officer for full details.

Michael Fennelly Talk.

One of the modern greats of Kilkenny hurling, Michael Fennelly will be imparting some of his views and ideas on hurling on Thursday November the 6th next. Fennelly is a lecturer on Strength, Conditioning & Nutrition and has worked with sports teams in Ireland and Australia. Fennelly will speak on various topics of interest to GAA Players and coaches at the Rejuvenate Centre in Fermoy at 7.30pm. Places are limited so booking is essential.

GAA Memorabilia Fair

The collecting of GAA programmes, books and other publications has become a very popular hobby in recent decades. The selling, trading and swopping of these items is now a big sideline for many GAA fans. On Sunday November the 30th a  GAA Memorabilia Fair will be held in Thurles, the town where the Association was founded in 1884.
