Crushing defeat for Seniors.....
At Pairc Ui Rinn on Sunday last we suffered a heavy loss in Round 2 of the Cork Senior Hurling championship. Sarsfields beat us on a scoreline of 2  25 to  0  15. We scored just five points from play over the entire hour in what was one of our biggest ever losses in a Senior Hurling championship game.  Yet despite the margin of defeat the team never threw in the towel and battled hard right until the end. The score could easily have been 2  25 to 2  18 when one takes into account our goal chances and our wides tally over the hour. On the other Sars were well over us and probably slackened off a bit in the second half. We went into the game minus the services of Brendan Walsh and Barry Murphy and though Barry came on in the second half their loss was massive. Then our situation was made much worse when just after nine minutes we were reduced to fourteen players when a straight red card was flashed. If wee had our full compliment of players for the hour we would still have found it difficult to win but being a man down for fifty minutes was just impossible to deal with.  On the day the thrice County Champions Sars were way ahead of us. We were lucky that Barry Johnson our free taker was in superb form putting over points from all angles showing tremendous leadership and skill. Our tally of fifteen points came from just three players while on the Sars side seven of their side registered scores.
We started the game brightly but had a wide in our first attack. The stark difference between the two teams was that in our first three attacks we hit three wides and Sars had four early chances all of which resulted in points. We were behind by five when reduced in numbers and our first score didn't come until the twelfth minute when Barry raised our initial white flag. A minute later we had a point from play again from Barry Johnson. After a quarter of an hour's play we were getting more into the game as our backs and midfielders got to grips with their men. Up front Michael Cussen was causing us all sorts of problems as he scored point after point. With twenty five minutes gone we were just five points adrift, 0 9 to  0 4 but then Sars added 1 3 in the last few minutes of the half. Barry replied with three further points to leave us in arrears by 1  12 to 0  7 at the break. In truth we had been coping reasonably well for the middle ten minutes of the opening half but the goal really put daylight between the sides.   We started the second half with a great burst and two points courtesy of Mike Kearney and Barry Johnson (free) reduced the deficit to six. Both sides had point each to leave it 1  13 to 0  10 with twelve minutes gone. We seemed to be holding our own but then Sars opened up once more. They outscored us by 1  12 to 0  5 before the final whistle went. We had chances and two goal bound shots from Michael Collins were both diverted over the bar by defenders and Owen and Brian Murphy also had shots at goal saved. With things going against us in a major way it would have been easy for the players to cave in completely but in fairness all the lads on the pitch gave it everything right until the final whistle. In the end a margin of sixteen points separated the teams as we were beaten by 2  25 to 0  15. It was a fierce disappointment on the day to be defeated by such a wide margin. Things looked promising after the Carrigtwohill game but last Sunday it just went from bad to worse for us.

After two Championship defeats we now go into Round 3 of the Cork SHC. Here we will be joined by Killeagh and the losers of the Youghal/Na Piarsaigh and Bishopstown/ Courceys games. Those two games are down for decision on July 19th with the Round 4 ties on the first weekend of August. We have a month to turn our season around and hopefully all our injury problems will have healed up by then. The Senior Hurling season is far from over and progression in the championship is still there for us.
PS Draw made at County Board meeting Tues night Bride Rovers v  losers Bishopstown or Courcey Rvs

County Junior B Football championship.
On this coming Saturday night July 5th we are contesting the quarter- final of the County Junior B grade Football championship.
