 Up Beat AGM.....

The Annual General Meeting of the Bride Rovers GAA Club was held in Arus de Barra on last Friday night. One of the largest attendances for a decade was present for what turned out to be a very good, constructive meeting. The Bride Rovers Club was reformed on December the 7th 1964 at a meeting in Bartlemy Hall so this was the 50 th anniversary of that event.

Initially let me state the presentation of all the reports for the year was brilliantly done - a thirty six page booklet with full colour was available for everyone who was present. This contained all the facts and figures pertaining to 2013 on and off the playing fields.  Initially we had a summary followed by detailed reports from the various team managers and sub- committee reports as well as the Treasurers Report.

The highlights of 2013 for Bride Rovers included;

* Competing in the Cork Senior H. Championship for the 10th successive season.

* Brian Murphy captaining Cork SH team v Clare

* Winning  €10,000 in Cork GAA Members Draw

*  Progress in planning Phase 2 of Club Development

*  Publication of Club Coaching Manual

* Great success of Juvenile and Ladies Sections.

* Bride Rovers players on Cork teams.

* Hosting East Cork H and F Finals.

 Club Runai William O Leary then went through the Annual Report Section by Section dealing with the activities of all our Club Teams. A lot of debate took place on the serious decline of football within the club. It was felt that we must seriously look at this situation as there is no reason why the games of hurling and football cant both be played and developed. During the year we fielded three adult hurling teams yet struggled to field just one football team. A committee was set up to look at the football situation within the club and bring forward recommendations for 2014.

Our Senior Hurling team performed very well against Carrigtwohill and Ballinhassig but were well beaten by Midleton who went on to win the County. Our Junior A and Junior C teams gave some great Championship displays. In particular our Junior A team were unlucky not to qualify for the play-off stages of the Avondhu Imokilly League. At under 21 level we have not been a force with many years in either code so a huge effort is needed in this area.

Club Treasurer Dan Quill then gave his Annual Report. 'Tight' is the only word to describe our financial situation but we have a fund for future Club Development which is very welcome. The Treasurer said he couldn't over emphasise the importance of the Weekly Club Lotto which provides the finance for the every day running of the Club. He appealed to each and every member, player and supporter to join the Lotto -each and every €2 ticket sold every week is vital. During 2013 no major Fundraising project was undertaken and it was stressed that in the coming year a major effort to raise finances for future development will have to be undertaken. Dan thanked all those who had helped him and the Club during his three year term in Office and he wished the Club all the best for the future.

Outgoing Club Chairman James Bermingham who has also completed his three year term of office the addressed the meeting. He said 2013 was a good year for the club though at adult level we won no trophies. Our teams had competed well but more was needed to bring titles at County and Divisional level to the Club. He thanked all those who had helped during his three years as Chairman of Bride Rovers and said great credit is due to all who work tirelessly for the club, week in, week out. He thanked the members of the Club Executive and the various sub committees for their efforts during 2013. James pointed out the various challenges ahead for the Club including the need for providing further playing fields for the Club's teams in the years ahead.

Bride Rovers 1  9 Aghada 3  8.

In Castlelyons at noon on Sunday we faced Aghada in the quarter final of the JB Grade Football championship.   All year we have struggled to even field a team in this grade and on Sunday we had just 19 players available. We had a disastrous start and after 11 minutes we were behind by 2  3 to no score. It seemed as tthough were going to be absolutely destroyed by Aghada's third team ,yes they field at Senior and Junior A as well, but gradually we came into the game. Points from Sean Ryan, Barry Johnson(2) and Terry Broderick meant we were still 2 5 to 0 4 in arrears at the break but playing well and with great heart. We took over after the resumption and a great point from Brendan Walsh and two more from Barry reduced the margin to just four points. Disaster struck as an attacking movement of ours broke down and Aghada broke upfield and got a third goal followed by two points. Frank Hogan made several fantastic saves to keep us in the contest. Points from Sean O Brien and Jerome brought the margin back to seven. When Terry kicked a great goal we were right back in thee game but try as we did we just couldn't get through for another goal, despite several great chances. Aghada held on to win by 3 8 to  1  9, a five point defeat. Great credit is due to the lads for the magnificent effort they put in after an awful start. Great credit to James Ahern for taking over as Team Manager at the start of the year and putting in an awful lot of work.

Team F. Hogan(Captain), S. Kearney, B. O Driscoll, J. O Connor, S. Boyce, P. O Driscoll, J. Pratt,  D.Dooley. B. Johnson, J. Mannix, S. O Brien, S. Ryan, B. Walsh, T. Broderick, J. O Driscoll; Sub F. Collins.

They say the darkest hour is before the dawn and hopefully as regards football in Bride Rovers that was last Sunday. A few years back we won 2 East Cork Junior A grade football championships and truly we could have gone on and emulated the feat of Cloyne in winning the County JAFC. Senior Hurling and Junior Football can co-exist in the club but a change of attitude is needed. Hopefully this time next year wee will have a brighter report on Junior Football for 2014.
