Cork Minor A Ladies Football Semi- Final
Bride Rovers 0-6 St Vals 5-20
Our minor football campaign for 2013 ended in a county A semi-final defeat to a superior St Vals side last Monday night in Fuohy Park. However, our girls played bravely throughout and emerged from the match with credit for that. We had a nightmare start, conceding a goal within a minute but we responded well and matched the opposition well for the rest of that opening half. During this period, we scored six points and could have had a couple of goals also, while we restricted St Vals to a further ten points. The half time score was 0-6 to 1-10 and we were reasonably happy with our performance after that bad start. St Vals have strength in depth though, backboned by a large number of players of Cork U16 and minor calibre, which almost every side struggles to match and this proved to be the case for us in the second half. As we tired, we struggled to compete as we had in the first half and a gap opened up. We did have some chances to add to our scoreline, hitting the crossbar and post also, but never enough to come close to challenge. St Vals also scored some late goals to round off the scoring.
Well done and thanks to the minor panel of 2013 and to fellow selectors Bridget and John. We won 5 matches in East Cork and came quite close to winning an East Cork A title in an exciting final with neighbours Fermoy. There is no shame in losing to a stronger side as we did in this semi-final in our first year at this highest level and our players have shown they have a bright future if they continue to work on their game.
