Eastern Double for Minor Hurlers. Huge Occasion on Saturday....

Our Minor Hurling team completed an Easter Region Rebel Og League Championship double on Sunday last. Earlier in the year we had won our Section of the League which then pitted us against the runners up from the other section in the Semi Final. We received a walk over in this game thus putting us through to the League Final. Our opponents were Clondrohid who scored 1-20 against Brian Dillons in their semi final. Two years ago at U-16 level we defeated Clondrohid in the East U-16 Championship final. As runners up they too went forward to the County Championship rounds. We were subsequently defeated by St.Marks and Clondrohid later defeated St. Marks in the County Final. After a lot of searching for a venue for Sundays decider the Whites Cross club kindly provided their excellent facilities for the game.
We had a great response to Clondrohid's first point with scores from Cian O Connor
And two points from Dean Linehan. A goal from Cian followed by points from Colm Power, Dean and Cian gave us a commanding 1-7 to 0-3 lead with twenty minutes gone. We looked well on top but Clon had other ideas. They completely took over in every sector and scored 1-5 in an eight minute spell- our only reply was a point from Dean Linehan to leave it 1-8 to each team at the break. It wasn't that our lads sat back when ahead but simply they were out-hurled by a very skilful and determined team. The second half was a ding-dong battle, producing some great hurling from both sides with Shane Walsh dominating in defence we had a plentiful supply of the sliotar up front. Early points from Colm, Sean Cotter and Dean saw us 1-11 to 1-9 ahead. We went 1-16 to 1-11 ahead with thirteen minutes left and it seemed as though we had the winning of the League title in sight. Back came Clondrohid for a goal and it was a two-point game. The last ten minutes were hectic with great scores from both sides and some outstanding defensive hurling. A goal from sub Darren Moore was the vital score and we held on to win a super game by 2-22 to 2-15. Well done lads, it has been a long season since our first League game but this was undoubtedly the best team we met this year in both League and Championship. Clondrohid is not a traditional hurling area but great credit is due to the mentors of that club for moulding such a lovely skilful team. Clondrohid have suffered two tragic losses this season, which makes their display all the more remarkable. Though defeated, they can be proud of their display. If the stick together they will be a great team in years to come. What can one say of our lads? They are a mighty bunch of characters and warriors. When defeat stared them in the face they rallied to the call again with some great hurling.
Team: S. O Connor, P. Noonan, T. O Sullivan, R. Prendergast, S. Walsh, J. Connor, W. Finnegan, S. Cotter, D.J. Cahill, D. Linehan, C. O Connor, C. Power, Subs: D. Moore, J. Barry.
