After an eighty one year gap Bride Rovers captured a County Minor Hurling championship title last Sunday in Killavullen. We had a marvellous win over a gallant Clyda Rovers side after a great display of hurling. It capped a great weekend for the Club as the u 13 hurlers had captured County honours in Lisgoold on Friday night.

Sunday saw near perfect conditions for hurling on an excellent pitch. With an u 13 game as curtain raiser there was a fine crowd present and a great atmosphere, typical of a real hurling championship Sunday. Our lad had finished up training on the Thursday evening and one could see the determination on their faces as they took the field on Sunday. Miah Moynihan of Grenagh threw in the sliotar at 1 o clock. The first ten minutes were very tense as both teams tried to gain supremacy. Clyda had two great scoring chances early on but both ended up as wides. Points from Dean Linehan, and Cian O Connor settled us but Clyda were well in contention after the first quarter, just 0 2 to 0 4 in arrears. We were lucky on several occasions as lyda twice hit the post and had several bad wides in a row. The vital score of the half came when Cian O Connor took a great pass from Shane Walsh and headed forward. He anticipated a hook as he was about to shoot over a point, continued his run and scored a great goal. This gave us a cushion of a 1 9 to 0 4 half time lead which probably fluttered us a bit as Clyda had nearly as much possession as us in the first period. In the second half our forwards took over and we scored some brilliant points. Clyda had their time on top as well especially in the first ten minutes but Shane O Connor made two vital saves. In front Padraig Noonan and Tadhg O Sullivan and team captain Jamie Buckley played very smart hurling moving the sliotar outfield to Shane and Ryan who constantly kept it moving. With Cian O Connor ruling the roost in the middle of the pitch William Finnegan, Dean, DJ, Sean and Colm got great possession and hit over lovely scores. The last ten minutes produced great hurling as the lads sensed that this County title was within their grasp and they were determined to win it well. Clyda did get through for a goal but we still won by 1 22 to 1 8. It was a historic win, a great win for a great bunch of lads who have put in a huge effort all year. Training for this campaign started back in February under the watchful eye of Joe Delaney and team manager William O Leary and selectors Daniel Dooley and Daniel Lane. It's been a long six match campaign but the team got it's reward on Sunday.

Presentation

After the game Noel O Neill on behalf of the Rebel Og County Board presented the County Cup to delighted team captain Jamie Buckley. Jamie suitably replied and thanked all the team mentors and supporters and parents of the players. He said it was a great honour to bring a Minor co title to the club after all the years. He then asked for three cheers for Clyda Rovers. After an impromptu rendition of Bride Rovers Abu in the middle of the Killavullen pitch it was a happy cheering crowd that went back to Rathcormac to celebrate. On Sunday night in conjunction with the u 13 team and the ladies football teams a victory parade was held in the village to mark this historic occasion.

It was in Riverstown on Sunday November 7th 1932 that we won our previous Minor County. On that day in Riverstown a team led by Dick Ryan of Ballinterry beat Glen Rovers by 5 1 to 2 1.Scorers.

Minor Hurling League.

We were billed to play Grenagh in the Minor Hurling League group play off at the weekend but we have received a walkover. Our next game in the MHL will be against either Cobh, Brian Dillons or Clondrohid at a date to be arranged..

 U 13 County.

At Lisgoold on Friday night the u 13 hurlers won a marvellous County Championship title after a ding dong battle with Kiltha Og. It was a great team display, well done to all the players and mentors.

 Weekly club Lotto

Last week's draw took place in Benskin's Bar for a jackpot of €7,800.

 Junior C Hurling.

The Junior C Hurling team play Killeagh away under lights in Killeagh on tonight Thursday Sept 26th at 8pm.

Junior Footballers Advance in Championship.

 Bride Rovers Junior footballers had three points to spare over old rivals St. Catherine's in the first round of the East Cork JBFC in Ballynoe on Friday, September 20th. This game was played under lights and the outcome was in doubt until the final minutes. Catherine's opened strongly with a brace of points before Barry Johnson kicked the first Rovers point from a free. Catherine's then went 3-1 ahead before a Jerome O'Driscoll pointed free narrowed the gap. Minutes later Brendan Walsh was at the end of great Rovers move to score the only goal of the game and the same player raised the white flag before the interval to see Bride Rovers lead 1-3 to 0-3. Two further points from Catherine's in the second half narrowed the gap to the minimum but the Rovers responded with a Jason Mannix point. A brace of excellent points from Rovers full forward Terri Broderick sealed the victory for the Rovers.

 All Ireland Weekend

Well it's going to be a bumper sporting All Ireland Weekend in Dublin with Hurling and ladies Football Finals. Cork are dually involved with the hurlers in the replay against Clare on Saturday and the girls against Monaghan on Sunday. It's an especially proud weekend for the Bride Rovers Clubs as we are lucky to be one of the few clubs in Cork to have players on both sides. On Saturday Brian Murphy and his colleagues will face Clare again to try and bring the Liam McCarthy Cup back to Leeside. The drawn game was great so lets hope for a repeat on Saturday. It will be strange to be heading into Croke park for a 5 o clock start for an All Ireland Hurling final, ,yes times are a changing indeed, Come on the Rebels. On Sunday the Eleanor Ahern, Jennifer Barry and Grace Kearney are all involved with the Ciork senior team Best of luck girls, here's hoping for a Cork double.
