Last weekend saw two of our club hurling teams ion championship action and both recorded good victories. In Carrigaline on Saturday afternoon the Minor Hurlers took on a combination side Western Gaels in the County Semi Final. After a close encounter where we led by just a single point early in the second half we upped the game for a great win This puts us into the County Final against Clyda Rovers on next Sunday September 22nd. On Sunday afternoon then our third Hurling XV affectionately known as the Holy Terrors took on Castlemartyr in the championship in Lisgoold and had a one point victory.

Saturday September 14th in Carrigaline;

Co MHC semi final v Western Gaels.

We found it tough going in the early stages of this game. Peter Kelleher the dual Cork Minor star was the main player for Western Gaels and he was hugely influential in the match. After the first quarter we began to dominate and built up a nine point lead and looked set for an easy win. A succession of points from frees and play followed by a goal brought our lead down to three at the break. The second half started as the first ended and we were very much on the defensive again as the Gaels added two more points to reduce our lead to a single point. The game was very much up for grabs at this stage but in fairness our lads tore into the game and registered some very good scores to earn a fine victory in the end.

This win means we are now in the County Final of this competition. On Sunday last Clyda Rovers defeated Tracton by eight point in the second semi final .

The County Final is down for decision on this coming Sunday September the 22nd -more about this later.

Sunday September 15th in Lisgoold East Cork Junior C Hurling championship preliminary round V Castlemartyr.

Having used forty five players in Senior and Junior A Championship already this season fielding a third team isn't always easy but we had twenty one players togged out in Lisgoold for our first round game v Castlemartyr. With a near gale force wind blowing down the field it was obvious even before the game started that it was as they say' going to be a game of two halves' with the elements having a huge bearing on the outcome. We played against the breeze in the opening half and in truth some heroic defending was called for. The Reds had two points early on, one from a free before Gavin Quill pointed a 65 for our first score in the ninth minute. Castlemartyr doubled their tally with points from play and a 65 to lead by 0 4 to 0 1 in the thirteenth minute. With Maurice Dooley aided and abetted by Brian Lahive, Barry Collins and Podge Noonan(playing his second cship game in 24hrs) in the full back line excelling our half back line of Sean Cotter ( another on 2nd game duty) Tomas Kearney and Jim O Connor grew in confidence. Daniel lane and Stephen O Leary more than held their own at midfield. Gavin Quill pointed another 65 with a quarter hour gone. Despite playing against the wind we were winning plenty possession but found scores hard to come by. From a free Daniel lane made it 0 3 to 0 4. After good work from Tomas Kearney and Mike Hogan Gary Clerkin had our fourth point to make it level pegging. Castlemartyr went a point ahead again before Daniel Lane had his second white flag from a free to leave it five points apiece at half time. Now the wind never won a game but to be level scoring having played against it was a great boost. Castlemartyr came out storming in the second half and had four attacks which yielded just one point to go ahead by 6 to 5. After this we struck a real purple patch - we scored 1 5 without reply to build up a seven point lead. Firstly Gavin hit over his third 65, then Gerard Healy struck a grand point, followed by points from Gavin, Mike Hogan(2) and a goal from Darren Moore. That left us 1 10 to 0 6 ahead with quarter of an hour to go. Castlemartyr weren't finished however and had a goal to narrow the gap. James Hogan struck a point to put us 1 11 to 1 6 ahead. Castlemartyr had a point and then with two minutes to go they hit a goal from a close in free to leave us hanging on to a single point lead. As the game entered extra time Castlemartyr sought an equaliser but our defence held out to win on a scoreline of Bride Rovers 1 11 Castlemartyr 2 7. Well done lads on a fine win and well done to Shane O Connor and Barry Johnson who were in charge on the line.

This win puts us into the quarter final against Killeagh. This game may be played on Thursday September the 26th. The eventual winners will face Cobh or Cloyne in the semi final of the competition.

'The Holy Terrors'

Back in the 18880's when Fr Edmund Barry was very involved in the promotion of Gaelic games in the parish he was delighted to be able to get a third adult hurling on the field. He was at a funeral in Castlelyons when the third team played their first match in the autumn of 1888. On his return to Rathcormac Fr Barry enquired as to how the team got on and the reply came "Do you know what Father , they are right Holy Terrors altogether!" and the name stuck !

Great Win for Camogie Club.

Well done to the Bride Rovers u 14 camogie team who defeated Clonakilty in the County Final in Mahon on Saturday last. Earlier in the season Clon came to Pynes Field for a league game and won well but on Saturday the Bride Rovers girls played very well for a great win.

Weekly Club Lotto.

County u 13 A Hurling Final.

Best wishes to the club's u 13 hurling team who contest the County A Hurling Final on Friday night. They meet Kiltha Og in Lisgoold at 6 o clock. Go for it boys.

Junior B F Championship.

We are down to play St Catherines in the first round of the East Cork Junior B Grade football championship on this coming Friday night September the 20th Our football fortunes have waned dramatically in recent years.. It's not long ago that we won two Junior A Grade titles and a B Title with our second team Now we are struggling a Junior B level to field a team. The game on Friday night is fixed under lights at Ballynoe . It was fixed for 7.30 but may go back to 8pm.

County Minor Hurling Final on Sunday.

Next Sunday may be All Ireland Final Football final Sunday but it is also a red letter day for us as our Minor Hurling team contest the County Championship Final. At the start of the year with just five players on the age of eighteen we debated about being able to field a team. We went for the twelve a side competition and now we have qualified for the Final. It is just the fourth time in the history of the Club that we have reached a minor County Hurling championship decider. We won the County Minor H chship in 1932 defeating Glen Rovers in the final . Twelve months later the same sides met in the final again but the Glen won easily. In 2009 we reached the Final but were beaten by St. Fachtnas of Rosscarbery

To date in this years campaign we have beaten Grenagh, Kinsale, Cobh, Tracton and Western Gaels. Clyda Rovers have defeated \Kildorrery and Tracton en route to the Final.

A number of our players have figured on Cork Development squads in recent years and this experience has helped enormously. Though we have had success at u 12 and u 14 level in recent seasons the situation at u 16 and minor level has been very disappointing.

In fairness since the start of this season this Minor panel has made a huge effort at training and playing games with Jamie Buckley the team captain.

With William O Leary Daniel Lane, Joe Delaney and Daniel Dooley involved on the line it's been a very good campaign to date. We have had a few injury scares with players out in recent weeks . Hopefully these will have cleared up before the weekend and in time for the Final. At the time of writing the game has been pencilled in for one o clock on Sunday but no venue has been announced.

A County Final in any grade is a big occasion so we wish the lads the very best on Sunday. In all our games so far the lads have played great hurling but the County Final is when it all counts. Go for it lads, the parish is behind ye. Training finishes up on this Thursday evening at 6.30pm.

School Reunion.

Well done to all involved with the Rathcormac School Reunion over last weekend. It was great success and enjoyed by the many visitors who attended from far and wide.
