Minors in Rebel Og Final....
Our Minor Hurling team qualified for the Rebel Og East Minor C Hurling championship Final on Monday night. Having defeated Grenagh and Kinsale in the previous rounds we travelled to Lisgoold to take on Imokilly rivals Cobh in the semi final. Cobh had defeated Lisgoold in the quarter final scoring 5 16 so we expected a tough game. Over the years Cobh have traditionally produced some very good minor hurling teams. In the late 1970's when we were joined with Watergrasshill under the St. Bartholomews title we had an epic game with Cobh in Carrig. Leading by a point with a minute to go we looked safe. Cobh were pressing hard for the equaliser. Then in a break upfield we got a point to go two ahead. "Two points is a dangerous lead" someone muttered on the sideline, wise words -in the very last attack of the game Cobh lashed in a goal and we lost by a point. Four years ago down in Cobh in the League/Championship we dominated the game but couldn't get the win. On Monday night Cobh settled quickest and opened the scoring with a point from a long distance free. William Finnegan had the sides level a few minutes later when he raided a white flag. Sean Cotter cut through for a great goal and we were on our way. A succession of points followed and when William added our second goal we led by 2 5 to 2 points. By half time we led by 5 8 to 0 6. Cobh added 3 2 in the second half but we finished good winners on a scoreline of 5 16 to 3 8.
This was a good display from all the team and four subs played on the night.

We are in the Final now and the likely date is Friday September the 6th- Friday week. Our opponents in the decider will be Tracton. On Monday night last they defeated a fancied Brian Dillons side by 2 14 to 0 13 having previously accounted for Ballygarvan in the quarter final. With the evenings closing in fast this will probably be a 6.15 fixture, probably at a City venue. With players back at school now it will be a tight schedule to fit in evening training but this group have put in a huge effort since the spring so keep it going lads. Best of luck to those involved with Cork Development squads in their Tournaments on this coming Saturday.

East Cork JHL Div 4, In Pairc na Bride, Friday August 23rd.

Lisgoold were the visitors for the penultimate League Game on last Friday night. We were short several players due to the upcoming Minor Championship and also some players were absent due to injury.
The first half was a cat and mouse affair and Ger Healy and the three Hogan's, Mike, Niall and James were on the scoreboard in the opening period and at half-time the teams were level at 0-5 each.
We had a bright start to the second half and had some excellent points scored by Daniel Lane. We took total control of the game and further points had us ahead by 0-12 to 0-7 with ten minutes to go. Gavin Quill came off the bench, having been injured and rifled the net twice in closing minutes. We ran out winners on a score of 2-14 to 0-8.

IHC Game in Pairc na Bride.

On this Saturday evening August 31st we host a County Intermediate game in Pairc na Bride. The contestants are St. Catherines and Kildorerry and the game is timed for 6.15. We will need plenty help on the evening so all who are free are asked to be at the Pitch by 5.15 at the latest. Since their exit from the ranks of Junior Hurling in 1983 St. Catherines have had a glorious era with their hurling teams both adult and underage. Kildorerry on the other hand are 'the new kids on the block' having won the Cork County Junior title for the first time last year. It should be a great game. The Club is producing a programme for the match.

Last weekend was a brilliant time for Bride Rovers with the u 13 hurlers winning a title on Saturday and then on Sunday the Juvenile and ladies Clubs had a marvellous Family Fun Day. The u 13 hurlers travelled to Pairc Ui Chonaill in Caherlag, home of Erins Own to take on Kiltha Og in the u13 A Hurling Final. This was an absolutely top class display of hurling from both teams. We were well ahead at half time but the Dungourney/ Castlemartyr came out flying in the second half. They brought the margin down to 5 points but our lads finished strongly for a great win. In 1930 Bride Rovers won their first ever East Cork Junior Hurling title. On that side was John Kearney, his great, grandson Kieran Kearney was on the team on Saturday and played a vital role in the win. Looking down through the list of Bride Rovers one thing struck me, that was the way so many 'new' people in the area have got involved in the Club which is a great sign. On Saturdays team we had players with links to Antrim, Kilkenny, Waterford, Roscommon and Donegal ! mighty isn't it? Forty years ago, in 1973 Dave Ryan died, Dave would have been a very proud man last Saturday. For years he carried car loads of young lads to games all over East Cork. Not many titles came our way then but people like Dave kept the show on the road.

On Sunday the Family Fun day was the best event I ever saw in Pairc na Bride. Literally hundreds of boys and girls played fun games, from our own club and nine other clubs as well. With competitions, side shows, karting, ferret 'racing', cow milking, book stall and many other events it was a superb day. Well done to all involved.

All Ireland Final.

It's just a little over a week away yet but the excitement is mounting in advance of the All Ireland Final. It will be a Cork v Clare Final -only the second ever 'All Munster' Final and of course a repeat of the Munster Semi Final of early summer. It's hard to know who will emerge as the bookies favourites next week as thetre is very little between the sides. Cork have been in so many Finals over the years as they try for All Ireland no. 31 while the Bannermen seek just their fourth title.

With Clare in pursuit of a Senior/U21 double Dav'y men will be hard to beat but Jimmy Barry Murphy will be concentrating on the positives in Corks progress to date during the summer. It is great to see that Brian Murphy is back in training with the Cork squad and hopefully he will have a part to play in Cork's bid to bring home the Liam McCarthy Cup for the first time since 2005. All the talk of course is about tickets and as usual when Cork are in a Final there is a severe scarcity of tickets. At Club level we could easily do with a hundred tickets but our allocation will be no where that number.

World Mini Games Hurling Cancelled.

We were very disappointed to be told last week that the 7 a side hurling in the World Mini Games in Cork City last weekend was cancelled. It appears that many of the teams who had entered pulled out leaving the organisers with no choice. We had entered a team for the competition.
