Our Senior Hurling team is back in championship action on Sunday next June the 30th. We face Ballinhassig in Round 2 of the competition at Pairc Ui Chaoimh at 2.30. We lost our first round game against Carrigtwohill on June 2nd by a margin of three points. The previous night Ballinhassig went down to Sarsfields, the County Champions by two points. In 2011 Ballinhassig were relegated from Senior to Premier Intermediate but they won out the PIHC in convincing style last year to regain their Senior status. They played brilliantly against Sars and were only defeated by a brace of late points. They are a serious Senior team and will be all out to gain revenge for the last time we met. That was in 2008 in Riverstown. We were lucky to get a draw the first day. In the replay we won by 0 10 to 0 9.
Our game against Carrig was the typical 'game of two halves' - in the first thirty minutes we just weren't at the races at all and left Carrig build up a huge lead. On the night Carrig got points from every angle while we struggled to come to grips with the pace of the game. We played a different kind of hurling in the second half, displaying great determination. We got the margin down to points for an instant but Carrig again finished stronger. Make no mistake about it if we give Ballinhassig the same leeway they will punish us on the scoreboard as they are renowned for their point scoring ability. We still have to hurl from the start on Sunday as it's very hard to overhaul a team once they get into their stride. We have struggled all year in getting decent scores. The lowest score by a winning team in the first round of this years Cork Senior Championship was 2 13, we need to be able to clock up a tally like that and even at that we will find it very hard to beat Ballinhassig. This will be a tough contest to win but we are capable of doing it. Go for it lads. The game is part of a double header with the Erins Own v Ballymartle game at 4 o clock.
Well done Brian and Cork.
What a day it was in the Gaelic Grounds on the Ennis Road in Limerick on Sunday last! Throwing caution and form to the wind the Cork Senior Hurlers turned in a powerful display to defeat Clare in the Munster Semi Final. Brian Murphy captained the Cork team and to see the man from Raheen, Kildinan march at the head of the Cork team was a very special moment for anyone who has any connection with the Club. Brian gave an outstanding display in the Cork defence which had a very hard task facing a strong breeze in the first half. It was in this half that the foundations of the win were laid. If Clare had built up a seven or eight point interval lead the challenge for Cork would have been very difficult. Te Cork backline never let Clare get into their stride and kept the half time margin to a very manageable three points. In the second half with the breeze the Cork forward division took over with Seamus Harnedy of St. Itas giving a Man of the Match display on his Senior debut. Well done to Brian and all his Cork colleagues and of course to Jimmy Barry Murphy and his management team. Cork will face Limerick in the Munster Final back in the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday July 14th.
JUNIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
At Pairc Naomh Caitrionaigh in Ballynoe on last Thursday night we faced Dungourney in the first round of the East Cork Oil Sponsored Junior A Grade Hurling Championship. On the night we put up a good display but our opponents were just simply too strong. We lost by a margin of eleven points 1 18 to 1 7 and we must await the draw for the second round at the weekend to see who we are to meet next. We will join Killeagh, Midleton, Lisgoold, Cloyne, the losers of Carrignavar/Carrigtwohill and the losers of Cobh/ St. Itas in this draw.
