Great news from Rome.

There was an outpouring of joy and pride last Saturday when news came through from Rome that Fr. Fachtna O Driscoll had been elected as worldwide leader of the SMA Mission Society. A native of Main St. Rathcormac, Fachtna attended the local National School and then St. Colmans College in Fermoy. From a very early age Fachtna and his brothers Gus and Brendan were leading players with the Club. The 1970's were however a lean period for the Club in terms of winning titles and winning the East Cork Junior B Grade Hurling title in 1975 was the highlight of Fachtnas career. That side was captained by our current Club President Pat O Connor. Fachtna joined the SMA order in Wilton in Cork in 1971 and was ordained in 1979. During his time in Maynooth Facthna and Gus won two Fitzgibbon Medals. After his ordination Fachtna served in Nigeria and then went for further studies in Boston. Anytime Fachtna was home on holidays he always lined out with the Rovers. He has been so proud of the Club's progress in recent years and with Fr. Gus and Fr. Seanie Barry was on the sideline in Pairc Ui Rinn last autumn for our thriller against Cloyne. Since 2001 he has been Irish Provincial Leader of the SMA order. In his new role Fr. Fachtna will lead the SMA order which has more than 800 priests and brothers serving all over the world. It is a huge task but one for which Fachtna is well prepared. On behalf of everyone involved with Bride Rovers we congratulate Fachtna and his family and wish him all the very best in the years ahead.

WINS FOR MINORS, SENIORS AND FOOTBALLERS.
It was a very busy weekend on the playing fields despite the un-spring like weather conditions.
On Thursday night our Minor Hurlers travelled to the Holy Ground of Cobh for a League game which resulted in a very easy win. Our Senior hurlers collected their first Red FM SHL points on Friday night with a good win at home over Glen Rovers. On Monday night we had Carrignavar as visitors in Div 3 of the East Cork JFL and we had our first win in this competition.

Minor Co. League.
We were to have a home game against Cobh on Thursday night last but Pairc na Bride was unplayable after very heavy overnight rain. The game was transferred to the Top Field in Cobh and we had a comprehensive win on a scoreline of; Bride Rovers 4-19 Cobh 0-7
Team panel; S O'Connor C O'Connor S Walsh W Finnegan P Noonan J Buckley S Cotter R Prendergast DJ Cahill T O'Sullivan D Moore C Howard Subs Colm Howard C O'Grady J Barry
Our game against Brian Dillons was due to be played on Wed night last April 24th but was postponed. At the time of writing this game has not been definitely refixed but may be on next Monday night April 29th
Our fixture at home to St. Vincents for Thursday May 2nd still stands.

Senior Hurling League.
On Friday night last we had Glen Rovers as visitors in the Red FM SHL. After two defeats to Douglas and Midleton we got a boost with a two point victory. There ia always a buzz playing Senior games against some of the old established City clubs like the Barrs, Rockies and the Glen and 'twas no different Friday night. This was a close tit for tat game with never more than two points separating the sides. The Glen led at half time by a point. The accuracy of Barry Johnson and some great defensive work gave us a deserved victory on a final scoreline of;

Bride Rovers 0-16 Glen Rovers 0-14
Team; D Fitzgerald A Collins Barry Murphy S Kearney P Walsh B Murphy K Collins S Boyce J Pratt T Broderick M Kearney J O Driscoll S Ryan B Johnson D Dooley. Subs Used J Mannix Eoin Murphy B O Driscoll

Our postponed game against Ballymartle is now rescheduled for next Tuesday April 30th in Kilworth at 7pm. After that we are down to play Blackrock on May the 9th.

East Cork Junior Football League.
Bride Rovers Junior footballers collected their first brace of points at the expense of Carrig na bhFear in Division 3 of the East Cork football league at Rathcormac on Monday night where they had four points to spare in an evenly contested match. The Rovers played their best football in the opening half turned over 8 points to the good. Sean O'Brien kicked the Rovers first point in the 3rd minute with two points each from Barry Johnson & Stephen Hackett, before Stephen found the net with a great goal. The same player set up Barry Johnson for goal number 2 just before the interval. Gavin O'Flynn added a point to put the Rovers 2-6 to 0-4 at half time. The second half was a tight affair with Carrig playing their best football but the Rovers defence stood firm with some great displays. The Rovers added two points in the second half, courtesy of Jason Pratt and Sean O'Brien. It s great to get a win and this sets them up nicely for their opening round of the County Junior B Football Championship when they take on Lough Rovers in Carrigtwohill on this Saturday evening April 27th with a 7.30 throw in.
