Senior Ladies Football
Bride Rovers 5-7 Gabriel Rangers 2-10
The history books were re-written once more in Macroom on Tuesday night last the 17th July when 18 girls played their part to become the first team to win a senior championship match for the club. Having won the Intermediate last year for the first time in the club's history we had a team competing at the highest level in Cork County for the 2012 season
Our opponents on the night were Gabriel Rangers who were no strangers to us having beaten us earlier in the season in the league final .Our girls got off to a very slow start which is something that has crept into our game in the last year or so and one that has been a talking point among the girls themselves for a while as to how it seems to happen continuously .It makes the game very hard when we find ourselves behind on so many occasions and end up having to play a very tough second half to come back. Tuesday night was no different. 12 minutes into the match, having missed a goal due to a point blank save by their goalie, a couple of point chances gone a begging and an excellent hand pass by Jennifer Barry which just dropped short and went into the net, saw us trailing by 1-5 to 0-1, our score coming from the boot of Eleanor Ahern .However our girls started to settle and although weather conditions could only be described as atrocious with the rain teeming down, they clawed away at Gabriel's lead . Colette scored a point, Grace and Jennifer Cahill both found the net and Jennifer Barry popped over a point with Gabriel's only reply being a point in the last 10 minutes of the half to leave the side levels at half time.
Gabriels started strong in the second half with a point in the first minute and if it were not for the strong defending of our back 6 (Emma ,Arlene,Caroline Bridgie, Shelly and Mary) and Goalie Caitriona who brought off some excellent saves throughout the match we would have been in severe trouble. A great move 6 minutes into second half involving a number of players ened with Catherine finding Grace with the final pass who dummied the full back giving the goalie no chance. Niamh Barry responded two minutes later with a great point followed by points from Sinead and Grace. The next two scores were to go Gabriels way a point from play and a point from a free. They had a player sin-binned for a foul on Caroline and unfortunately for the 10 mins she was off we didn't use the advantage of the extra player and failed to score during this period. The weather conditions hadn't impoved and the surface at this stage became greasy. An unfortunate slip by one of our players left a break in play for Gabriels who broke free for a goal .Elaine Dee was introduced into the forward line and soon made her presence felt .Claire Murphy and Maria Barry were both introduced in the back line and the fresh legs were well needed to keep Gabriels at bay. Grace found the net twice more in the 25th and 26th minute and a point each from Sinead from a free and a Gabriels free ended the proceedings for the night. This was once more a great team performance by a wonderful bunch of players who have given us such enjoyment and a win they thoroughly deserve. We now await the draw for the next round to see who our opponents will be. Well done to the three lads Diarmaid, Muscles and Sean.
