Senior Championship Begins.

It doesn't seem so long ago since we contested the 2011 Cork County Senior Hurling Championship quarter final against CIT and this weekend the 2012 campaign begins.

The last few years have been ones of contrasting emotions for us in the top Cork County Championship arena. From the euphoria of reaching the County Final in 2008 to the long drawn out saga of 2010 and the breath taking games in last years march to the quarter final. This is our ninth year at Senior level and just as St. Finbarrs crossed our paths frequently in the early years it's been Erins Own in recent times. Having been well beaten by the Glounthane/Knockraha/Little island team in 2007 we defeated them en route to the County Final in 2008. Last year in Riverstown in the ' back door' game it looked as though we were on course for another victory. We had a brilliant start, dominated for fifty minutes but were caught cold in the closing stages and beaten. When the 2012 Draw was made at County Convention in Pairc Ui Chaoimh last December the names of Bride Rovers and Erins Own were paired once more. It is said that the first round games are now meaningless as clubs have two further chances. While the extra chance route is available - and we were glad to avail of it last year, winning the first round is still very important. It guarantees Senior status for 2013 and takes the pressure of rapid fire championship games in a short period out of the month of June.

The opening round game involving ourselves and Erins Own goes ahead on next Sunday night May 27th. Last year this fixture was in Riverstown but on Sunday night it's to the home of 2011 County Champions Carrigtwohill we travel for the tie. Pairc Seamus de Barra is a fine venue so hopefully we will have huge vocal support when the sliotar is thrown in at 7.00pm. Based on form displayed so far this year Erins Own will be the hottest of favourites for this game. In the County Senior League they have had several very good wins whereas our solitary league win was over Killeagh back in April. League form of course can count for very little when it comes to Championship and traditionally the Rovers always keep the best for the championship. Since early in the new year the backroom team along with trainer Jack Russell have put in a lot of work with the team. In fairness to all the players they have prepared well, though injuries to a large number disrupted the training schedule. Many of the injured players are back in action now but we will still be outsiders for the game. We know that last year in Riverstown we left Erins Own right back into the game. On Sunday night we face a mammoth task but hope springs eternal and we can be certain that the team selected will give a good account of themselves. Go for it lads - Bride Rovers abú
