Quiz Saturday Night/Championship Sunday..
Well it’s here at last, yes the Annual Juvenile Club Quiz takes place in The Rathcormac Inn on this coming Saturday night February the 8th.  In years gone by table Quizzes consisted of ten or twelve rounds of Questions and you got maybe two minutes to write down the answers. Back then those correcting the Answer papers had to be  well versed in all aspects  general knowledge, world affairs, history, outer space and sport. Questions like ‘Which is the heavier -a ton of coal or a ton of feathers?’  or ‘What was William Shakespeare’s wife’s name/’ (the answer wasn’t Mrs Shakespeare!), well the answers written down were often hilarious but mainly unrepeatable! Mobile phones then came along and sometimes, despite the order ‘Turn Off All Phones’ unscrupulous competitors were known to Google while spending a penny etc! Well that’s all history now as we have truly embraced the moderenest of technology. The sheets of paper and peann luaidhe are truly a thing of the past. Now it’s fastest brains and fastest fingers with ‘multiple choice’ answers. With no disputes over answers it’s a great nights fun. All funds raised go towards the running of the Bride Rovers Juvenile GAA Club which now caters for close to 600 players. It’s both a fundraiser and a social night for the whole club. The quiz will be led by Tipperary ex-pat Paddy Croke and it’s just €40 per team of 4. If you are on your own, please come along and we can slot you in to a table with others. No pencils or pens or paper needed! It promises to be a great night with lots of fun and Prizes. The sliotar will be thrown in a t 8.30pm.
CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON BEGINS. It might only be the first week of February but the 2025 Championship season in East Cork commences this weekend. The Under 21 Football c competitions will be played under the new rules -two-pointers, arc, orange flags and three backs back etc. WE will meet neighbours Castlelyons in Castlelyons at 11.30 on Sunday next February the 9th. Go for it boys.
CORK HURLERS DRAW.  With both sides scoring 1 16 the National League Points were shared at wet and windy Pairc Ui Chaoimh last Saturday night. In front of 32,000 fans the Munster rivals played out a tough and tight contest. Cork were out of the blocks like greyhounds and simply owned the first quarter hitting some great points.  Eoin Roche started at corner back and Cork led 7/2 after a blistering start. The Limerick goal brought the Shannonsiders right back into the game as Cork faded. For most of the second half Limerick looked in control but in fairness to the Rebels they were never more than 4 points behind at any stage.  Shane Barrett’s goal set the game up for an exciting finish. Deep, deep into injury time Brian Roche who’d come on for the very unlucky Conor Lehane was in volved in a Cork attack which yielded a last gasp free.  Darragh Fitzgibbon raised the white flag again and it finished 1 16 apiece. Shoulder injuries to both Padraig Power and Conor Lehane will see them sidelined for a few weeks, Conor was on the field for only three minutes. Cork’s remaining NHL  programme is as follows; Sat Feb 22nd, away in Thurles at 7.30pm  v Tipperary,  Saturday March 1st  home v Kilkenny at 5pm (Ladies  F v Roscommon at 3 & NFL v Roscommon at 7). 75 YEARS AGO -1950.
The year 1950 was a low-point in the Club’s history. Having lost to O Brien’s (now Fr O Neills) in the 1948 Junior A grade Hurling Championship on a scoreline of 6 6 to 2 3 the Club regraded to Junior B for 1949. Good wins over Watergrasshill and Castlelyons saw the club reach the Junior B semi final.  The  8  8 to 2 1 win over Castlelyons was in June but the semi-final wasn’t played until October! The semi final game against Dungourney was played in Conna and the Rovers led by 1 4 to 1 2 at half time. Dungourney got well on top in the second half and went on to win by 6 3 to 2 7. The Club AGM in November decided to field an A Grade team for 1950.  Tom Barry NT ’the Master’ was elected as East Cork Board Secretary for 1950 and Dave Cahill was elected to the Board’s General Purposes Committee (GPC). Bride Rovers were drawn against Russell Rovers in the JAHC. The game was fixed for May 28th but a few weeks before this date the Club conceded the game as we were unable to field a team. No further Club activity was recorded for 1950.
GIRLS LOSE OUT TO GALWAY. The Cork ladies team lost out by 2 8 to 0 12 against Galway at Tuam last Sunday. Katie Quirke kicked 9 points and Sarah Murphy was between the posts and Leah came on as a sub. On Saturday March the 1st the Cork girls will face Roscommon at 3 o clock in Pairc Ui Chaoimh followed by the Cork Hurlers  v Kilkenny at 5 and then at 7 pm the Cork Footballers will also face Roscommon- a very attractive triple-decker.
