Cork are still in race for Liam, Under 20s Pipped, Newtown come to town..
A mixed bag for Cork teams as the Seniors who had no game last weekend are through to an All Ireland Preliminary Quarter Final. For our under age hurling sides at Minor and under 20 level it was exit s from the Championships. On Friday night the under 20’s lost by a single point in the Munster Final to the ‘auld enemy Tipperary and the following afternoon in Thurles the Minors went under to Wexford.  It was the under 20’s sixth game of the campaign, 4 in the Round Robin series the semi final win over Clare and then that shattering defeat to the Premier County.  The ‘goal that never was’ had a huge bearing on the outcome  but the wides tally of Cork was just far too high. Disappointment then for our Bride Rovers trio of Denis Cashman, Cillian Tobin and Ronan O Connell who have been involved all season with Ben O Connor’s side. Tipperary now go on to meet Offaly in the All Ireland Final of the competition on this coming Saturday June 1st in Nowlan park. Third placed in Munster the Cork Minor (u 17) hurlers lost out to a strong Wexford side on Saturday in Thurles. Our own Cormac Barry was on the extended panel with John Meyler’s side.

REMEMBERING FR. BARRY. This week back in 1900 the parish was in mourning after the death of Parish Priest Fr Edmond Barry. Fr Barry (1837–1900), priest and antiquarian, was born 7 March 1837 in Midleton, Co. Cork, elder son and second of three children of Edmond Barry of Birch Hill and Midleton, and Mary Anne Barry (née Murphy). He was educated in the seminary at Midleton and at St Patrick's College, Maynooth, Co. Kildare, where he became a Dunboyne scholar. Returning to Co. Cork after ordination, he was appointed chaplain in Youghal, and curate successively at Aghada, Mitchelstown, and Youghal. As parish priest (1886–1900) in Rathcormac, Co. Cork, he encouraged his parishioners to buy their holdings under the land purchase acts and was a strong advocate of abstinence from alcohol. He is best remembered here as ‘the father of the GAA’ as he was the guiding light in a short but hugely successful era for Gaelic Games in the parish from 1887 until 1890. Fr Barry died at his residence in Rathcormac. His remains were shouldered all the way from Rathcormac Church to Bartlemy. He is buried within the church, to the left of the altar, a bras plaque on the floor marks his burial place.
AMARENCO JHL DIVISION 4.
On Tuesday evening May 21st we travelled to Pilmore on the seashore to play St Its in a Div 4 JHL tie.  Thunder, lightening, flooding and road closures were encountered en route but in fairness the St Itas pitch was fine and dry. We had 19 plyers available on the night. This was St Itas first year with a second team in the League and our lads proved too strong on a scoreline of 6 16 to 1 7. Our ‘super score’ of the game was a brilliant second half goal by  Kamso Obi, well done K Ben Knox, Brian Collins, Cillian O Sullivan, Damien Buckley, Eldon O Connor, Gearoid Gubbins,  Jack Connor, Jack Kearney, John Buckley, Kamso Obi, Liam Collins, Michael Liddane, Nicky Kelleher, Ronan O Riordan, Ryan O Callaghan, Shane O Flynn. We play our last Group game in this Di 4 League on June 17th when we are away to Lisgoold. The East Cork League cut-off date is June 18th. Note; this game may be brought forward, players will be notified.
BARTLEMY HALL.
On next Wednesday night June 5th an Emergency General Meeting will be held in the Parish Hall in Bartlemy at 8pm. All those who are interested in the future of the Hall are asked to attend.
UNDER 14’s HUGE PROGRAMME.
We played three games in the hurling championship and one in football in the last two weeks. To say fine margins can shape your season, really sums up the weeks games.
On Tuesday May 14th we travelled to Cloughduv for  a hurling tie. After heavy rain during the day and plenty more during the game there was a lot of water on the pitch. The lads got off to a good start with an early goal and continued for all of the first half with some great scores in very poor conditions.  Half time score Bride Rovers 3-5 Cloughduv 1-4. Cloughduv came back at us in the second half and a got goals which we probably should have kept out but at that stage it was almost dark and how heavy the rain was! They went two points up and we had chances but just couldn't convert them,  Final score Bride Rovers 3-9 Cloughduv 5-4.
There was not too much time to lick our wounds as we were at home to Carrigtwohill just three days later on Friday 17th.This game was very different.  Overall our performance was below what we have come to expect from the lads but a big improvement in the second half secured a draw which we just about deserved! The first half was very flat and Carrigtwohill got 2-2 to our 1 goal. The second half showed an improved performance and with five minutes left we managed to get back to within two points. A good team move got us a goal to go up 1 point up. But Carrigtwohill managed to win a free to level it. Bride Rovers 4-3 Carrigtwohill 4-3.
On Friday 24th we were away to Cobh in our final game of the football championship.  After two wins a draw would guarantee a semi-final spot. Cobh have been a thorn in our side in football since we started competitive games and Friday evening continued that trend! In fairness to the lads they put in a big effort in the first and were unlucky to be 4 points down at half-time.  Cobh got a few early scores in the second half and we rotated players as we have 3 hurling games in a week. Three teams are on 4 points but we are 3rd on scoring averages.
On last Sunday May 26th we travelled to Douglas to play the fixture that was postponed due to Feile two weeks ago. In what is proving to be an extremely competitive grade with very little between all the teams we finished level after the hour. A good first half saw us ahead 3-3 to 1-4 at half-time.  With the wind at our backs for the second half we were confident.  However Douglas came back at us in the second half and got ahead. The lads worked hard but just couldn't score. It took a well worked point from Cody to grab a draw with time almost up. Bride Rovers 3-5 Douglas 3-5.
We have 2 more games this week with Eire Og  at home on Tuesday at 7 and Blackrock away on Friday at 7. It's surely a crazy schedule with four games in nine days. Why it has to be ran off in such short period of time baffles everyone, just as the weather is improving and we are approaching the longest evenings of the year, crazy.
CUL CAMP 2024.
The Bride Rovers Club Cul Camp for this year will run from Monday  July 29th until Friday August 2nd. That will be a busy as at 7.45 on that Friday evening we host Castlelyons an Fermoy in the County Senior A hurling Championship.
 PITCH DEVELOPMENT.
The woeful weather in March and April meant our plans for progressing the development of or second pitch in Ballybrowney had to be postponed. However Hourihans, our contractors, were on site this week doing ancillary work in preparation for the actual job of laying out the next playing pitch. It is now planned the full development will progress over the next three to four weeks. It was exactly 39 years ago on Sunday June 2nd 1985 that Pairc na Bride was officially opened by the late Con Murphy. The Cork Senior Hurlers beat Offaly in a Tournament game to mark the opening.

UNDER 20 FINAL SOLD OUT. Such is the excitement and enthusiasm following this particular Offaly under 20 team their all Ireland Final in Nowlan Park at 7.15 on Saturday night  Tipperary is sold out. Offaly lost the Minor Final in controversial and dramatic circumstances two years ago. They lost the under 20 Final to Cork last year -they’ll be hoping, in terms of Finals, that’s it’s Third Time Lucky. It’s always great to see the Green, White and Gold colours flying high.
SYMPATHY; We extend our sympathy to the family of the late Betty Moore nee Barry of Ballincurrig. Betty was a native of Hightown, Bartlemy. She married Willie Moore of Ballincurrig who played Senior Hurling with Cork and won a Senior All Ireland in 1954. Six years earlier, in 1948, Willie was a Cork Minor. He played Club Minor hurling with St Bartholomew’s but unfortunately put out his ankle the day before the Final v Midleton which we lost 7 3 to 5  2. Betty is survived by her sister Nora Leahy, son Michael and daughters Margaret, Liz and Nodlaig and was predeceased by her husband Willie and daughter Josie. May Betty rest in peace.
