Tony Walsh Cup goes to Limerick, Cork Rising , Fermoy Visitors in SHL.
After the washout of rain sodden April it’s great to see action on all fronts as pitches become playable once more. Last week saw a hectic programme of games with the Tony Walsh Cup Final on Saturday, Hurling Feile and rakes of juvenile games. Then on the Banks of Our Own Lovely Lee on Saturday night the Cork hurlers won a never to be forgotten game which guarantees the ‘Full House’ sign in Tom Semple’s Field next Sunday. The Senior Hurlers have a home game v Fermoy tonight. The Division 4 game against St Itas fixed for Sunday is gone ack to Tuesday. County Hall in Cork was the venue on last Monday for a historic Civic reception.
South Liberties (Limerick0 3 17 Bride Rovers 0 19Over the years the Tony Walsh Cup has travelled a bit -to St Mullins in Carlow, to Tallow in Waterford and to mallow and we’ve kept it by the banks of the bride a few times also. L last Saturday in perfect conditions we too on the South Liberties Club from the parish of Ballyneety in Limerick.   Former Cork and Kanturk goalkeeper Anthony Nash is now playing with the Limerick Club – the home Club of his father. It was a good competitive game. Both teams went score for score and we led by 5 points to 2 early on. A goal against the run of play put Liberties ahead but we levelled again. With ten minutes to go we were just a point in arrears but two snap goals in a minute turned the game in the Liberties favour. After the game Nora Walsh presented the Cup to the South Liberties captain who thanked the Bride Rovers club for the invitation. Thanks to the Walsh family for their attendance and thanks to our own Catering Committee who provided refreshments for all after the game. Our Senior Hurlers have a home game tonight (Thursday) against Fermoy in the RED FM Senior Hurling League with a throw in of 7.30pm

UNDER 14 FOOTBALL
Under14s go 2 from 2 in football championship.
After a good start to Carrigtwohill in the championship 2 weeks ago we welcomed Midleton to Pairc na Bride on Friday evening.  With a few lads out injured and losing Jack O'Donovan to a broken nose after 5 mins a huge effort was required on a hot evening.  We got off to a great start with a well worked goal almost from the throw in. However Midleton  came down the field and were awarded a penalty which hit the crossbar and was cleared.  We lost Jack to injury who was replaced by Cathal O'B. With both defences on top scores were hard to come by. David got a great goal after hard work out the field and Cormac won us a close in free which was converted.  Midleton got three points to leave it Bride Rovers 2-1 Midleton 0-3 at half-time.  They second half was a test of fitness and all the lads put in a serious effort. Midleton attacked in waves but all the lads put their bodies on the line to ensure no goal was scored. Cathal M made a super save from a penalty. They managed 4 points but our lads added 1-2 to the score by breaking at pace and working the ball excellently up the field.  Final score Bride Rovers 3-3 Midleton 0-7. This almost guarantees a semi-final spot with our last group game against Cobh. Team V Midleton

CORK v TIPPERARY. Well what could have been a damp squib, dead rubber game next Sunday is now guaranteed to be a sell out. It was 283 years ago in 1741 that the first recorded  Cork and Tipperary hurling game that could be classed as ‘inter county’ was played.  That historic match was played in Glenagowl, Kildinan. 1740 had been a woeful year weather-wise with frost right into the summer and crop failure. There was no potatoes harvested, they rotted in the ground. As a result there was severe famine especially in the Munster area and thousands died.  The following Spring of 1741 was also severe but by March and April things improved and crops were planted. By the autumn of 1741 the weather had greatly improved and a good harvest was gathered in. Some historians reckon that in that autumn of 1741 a lot of celebrations and kind of thanksgiving events were held. And that the hurling match was one of these.  The 1741 game was in essence a challenge contest between a team organized by Colonel McAdam Barry of Lisnagar, Rathcormac and a team led by Denis McGrath of Kilbehenny (where the 3 counties Cork, Tipperary and Limerick meet). In his book “The Banks of the Bride”, published in 1942, local historian Patsy Barry N.T. recorded that the Cork v Tipperary game was well remembered in the area. Tradition tells us that on the Cork team were seven or eight sons of William Fitzgerald Barry of Ballinaglogh, Carrignavar on the team as well as several of the Barrys of the Kildinan branch. There would have been little or no knowledge of the game were it not for the fact that the result was disputed – both sides claimed victory! A Gaelic Bard from Tipperary who had come with the team to Glenagowl boasted in verse that the Premier county men had won the contest. This was vehemently denied by the Rebel supporters. One of the great Gaelic poets Seán Ó Murchú na Ráithíneach from Carrignavar was prevailed upon to set the record straight. He wrote a ten verse reply to the Tipperary poet. Naturally Ó Murchú claimed that the Cork side had won the hurling game!
Isn’t it mighty that 283 years two lads from Kildinan Brian and Eoin Roche will be proudly wearing the Red jersey of Cork next Sunday!
UNDER  16. The under16s had a busy week with a football league game on Thursday v Cobh followed by a hurling league game on Monday V Passage.
The football was played at home against a spirited Cobh outfit.  The boys started well and had enough possession in the first half to be well in front but some wayward shooting kept the margin relatively tight.  In the second half it proved a similar tale with the boys putting Cobh under a lot of pressure but with Cobh making the most of their chances and keeping it tight until the end; many thanks to Tadhg, Dylan and Cormac who joined the panel for the day and performed admirably. Final Score: Bride Rovers 5-8 Cobh 3-6.  Panel: Adam Kelleher, Tadhg Cronin, Jack Lynch, Dylan Keating, Darragh O’Farrell, Éanna Lyons, Calum Somers, Shane O’Dowd, James Larkin, Matthew Kenny, Con McCormack, Shane O’Dowd, Eoghan Buckley & Cormac Lyons. The hurling followed the heavy rain on Monday morning but the sun shone into the Rovers boys faces in the evening’s first half.  Passage came into the match undefeated in their previous 3 matches so the boys knew it would be a good test.  The first half was a tale of lots of possession for the green and gold but a difficulty in scoring into the aforementioned sun. At half time the boys were up by three points.  In the second half,  Passage pulled some forwards back into their own half to clog the area and it made scores difficult to come by.  The score ebbed with the lead transferring over and back.  In the closing stages Passage scored a goal to put them 2 points up with 3 minutes remaining.  The boys dug deep and two late points, both from frees left it a drawn match.  Final Score: Bride Rovers 3-13 - Passage 2-16.  Panel:  Calum Somers, Darragh O’Farrell, Jamie Walsh, Eoghan Buckley, Éanna Lyons, Cathal Barry, Mark Hynes, Denis Fitzgerald, Garry Quirke, Matthew Kenny, Shane O’Dowd, James Larkin, Con McCormack, Donagh Hurley, Finn O’Driscoll & Oliver Harris.
 CORK v CLARE .
There a great song by Ralph Mc Tell ‘It’s a Long, Long Way from Clare to here’ well that’s how Cork GAA fans might well feel  this week. Imagine Rebel followers facing a trip to Ennis on Friday evening for the Munster u 20 Hurling semi final. Then Cork and Clare Senior Footballers face each other on Saturday – where? In Ennis again! What kind of lunacy is this? Apparently Cork wanted to play the two games a double-header but Clare wouldn’t agree, and then Cork supporters are expected to travel to Thurles again on Sunday. In Cork we love our Gaelic Games but a fixture list like that is a scandal, there’s no other word for it. We cant pay cash at a GAA venue and now we are forced to pay to watch the games we promote, foster, encourage and love -where’s it all going to end?
UNDER 15’s BUSY. Our U15s had a busy time of it last week when we participated in our second Feile competition of the week. On Saturday morning last we were hosted by Mallow with Blarney being the 3rd team in the group. In warm sunshine our opening game against Mallow was a tight affair. Mallow just edged us out by a goal but this was a game that could have gone either way. We were up again within 20 minutes to play against Blarney and the freshness was obvious from the start. We moved some players into new positions to maximise playing opportunities for all 20 players who togged. We lost by a couple of goals but gave a good account of ourselves. Mallow and Blarney contested to see who would move to the semi final stage with Mallow on top. Ballinora ended up winning our P2 division. Many thanks to Danny, Cody and Ciaran who had played an U14 football championship game the night previous. This really is a year of getting through as in total we have only 4 hurling league games and 6 football league games to play. With no championship we will look to restructure our approach next year to maximise gametime for all players.  Well done to Cathal;, Mark and Finn who got to the final of the All Ireland Super 9s in Gort on Thursday with Cathal being selected on the All Star team!
Pictured above is the squad that togged along with logistics manager Rian.
REBEL OG MINOR HURLING.Bride Rovers 2-22 v Midleton 1-12 in Pairc Na Bride 2.30pm last Sunday.
On a Very Hot Afternoon we hosted Midleton in a Minor Hurling League Game in Pairc Na Bride, Starting Team was
(Goals) Ben Knox. (Full Backs) Ronan Barray, Adam Cronin & Darragh Delaney. (Centre Backs) Sean Dowling, Cillian O Sullivan & Oran Keilty. (Centre) Field) Gearoid O Connell & Luke Harrington. ( Centre Forwards) Conor O Riordan, Thomas O Riordan & Jack Mannix. (Full Forwards) Rudi Gharib , Gearoid Gubbins & Thomas Hackett. (Subs) were Cameron Swailbe O Sullivan, Shane Pendergast, David Cash, Denis Fitzgerald, Shane O Dowd, Darragh Farrell & Matthew Kenny, we played all 22 players on the day,
We started very well playing direct ball through the middle winning clean possession and used it very well, as Midelton came into the game, we had to play up the wings and vairy our play which the lads did very well by running good lines and switching the ball faster and that brought us to have a 5 point lead at the short whistle.
We Made 3 changes at Half Time. Playing into the warm breeze in the second half Bens pock-outs were hitting the space well and our hard working Forward & Midfielders that came on to the running ball taking on the Midelton defence securing their own score or a free in for us that Conor was really successful at. At all times our backs played very well too winning the high percentages of their own ball and distributing it very well, a really good work rate from all lads and that led us to a good convincing win on the day. Final Result was Bride Rovers 2-22 v Midleton 1-12. Our next Hurling game is away to Blackrock Wednesday 15th @ 7pm
