CORK MINOR HURLERS IN THURLES.

The Cork Minor(under 17) hurling team begin their Munster Championship campaign  on tonight Thursday April 4th . The Rebels begin the 2024  provincial ‘Round Robin’ competition with a tricky game in Thurles against Tipperary. Our own Cormac Barry is on the Minor panel so we wish all the Cork players and management the very best. A week later Cork will welcome Limerick Leeside.

UNDER 12 REPORT.

The Under12s continued with their pre-season preparations by playing two football friendlies last weekend. Our Team 1 played out a thriller against a strong Glanmire team who are Two divisions above us. Despite being 2-2 to 0-0 down after 15 minutes, we came storming back into the game and scored some great team goals which all came from working hard and closing down the opposition. The final score was 4-03 to 2-09 but more importantly, this friendly gave the lads great confidence about the season ahead.

Team 2 played earlier in the day against an Under 11 selection in what was both teams first football match of the year. In tough ground conditions at Pynes, both teams played really well and will take confidence from the effort levels put in and their performance.

Both our teams start Phase 1 of the league next weekend, which is the grading stage. There is a busy schedule ahead with 43 games in total being played across both teams in hurling and football over the coming months. With so many games coming up, we would like to thank Denis Ahern and his team for doing such a great job with pitches, and to Aiden Dorgan for his patience around pitch booking.

It's a hurling weekend next weekend, so Team 1 face off against Nemo Rangers on Saturday at 4pm in the Juvenile pitch. Team 1 also has Lisgoold and Killeagh in their group. Team 2 travels to Douglas on Sunday at 3pm to take on Douglas third team. Team 2 also have Carrigtwohill 2 and Whitechurch in their group.

Training (hurling) continues on Monday night at 5.30pm in the astro and hurling again on Wednesday night at 6pm in Pynes. The schedule of games for us at under 12 level with two teams is huge but the lads just love playing matches. It’s a far cry from thirty years ago when the under 12’s might only have 6 or 7 games in the year.
CORK UNDER 20 HURLERS IN FRAHER FIELD.

When the Cork under 20 Hurling Panel was announced earlier in the year we were thrilled to have three players Cillian Tobin, Ronan O Connell and Denis Cashman on the selection. Cork are in championship action on tomorrow Friday night when they face the Decies in Fraher Field, Dungarvan at 7pm, best of luck Cork.

UNDER 16’s OPENER

The Under 16s got their Division 1 East hurling league campaign off to a fine start against Midleton on Monday evening, having played their first football game three weeks previously.  Waterlogged pitches had resulted in several postponed matches in the meantime. With the clocks just gone forward it allowed the first of the Monday night games with  throw-in at 6pm. The game began very competitively with Midleton giving as good as they got.  The first half was a relatively low scoring game although all the scores came from the Rovers' boys, who led by 1-7 to no score at half time.  The green and gold backs were tenacious throughout the match and only conceded the opposition's first score five minutes into the second half.  Up the other end the midfielders and forwards put Midleton under constant pressure and it paid dividends on the scoreboard.  Ultimately, despite a strong effort from Midleton, the boys ran out comfortable winners by 3-14 to 2-3.  Next up is Aghada on Thursday with football against St NIcks on Monday.  Squad:  Calum Somers, Eoghan Buckley, Jamie Walsh, Darragh O'Farrell, Éanna Lyons, Cathal Barry, Mark Hynes, Denis Fitzgerald, Micheal Walsh, Matthew Kenny, Shane O'Dowd, James Larkin, Finn O'Driscoll, Jack Lynch, Con McCormack, Sebastian Byrd, Donagh Hurley.

EAST CORK BOARD CENTENARY.

It was in April of 1924- just one hundred years ago, that the East Cork  GAA Board was formed at a meeting in Cobh Town Hall. Next week two commemorative events will be held in the Harbour Town. On Wednesday April 10th the regular East Cork Board meeting will be held in Cobh GAA Pavilion. Then on the following Saturday night April 11th the 6pm Mass in Cobh Cathedral  will be celebrated by Bishop William Crean to mark the Centenary. Later that evening a plaque will be unveiled at the Cobh GAA Pavilion in memory of the Board’s first Chairman, Ben Purcell, a native of Cobh. The Cobh Club will provide refreshments afterwards.

 A GREAT QUESTION??

In years to come it will be a great Question- who was the first ever Bride Rovers Clubman involved in a Penalty Shoot-Out in Croke Park? Now there’s a six-mark question surely! The answer of course is Raymond Hegarty. Raymond was one of referee Conor Lane’s  regular umpiring team for the Dublin v Derry División 1 Allianz national Football league Final in GAA HQ on Sunday last. The game ended in a draw, went to extra time and Derry looked likely winners until the Dubs got a late, late equalizing goal. Raymond was then on the green flag for the penalty shoot out which saw Derry win the League title for the first time since 2008 on a 3/1 final spot-kick tally. Well done to Conor, Raymond & Co. on handling a great game.
