All systems go for 2024..
It’s only Mid February but the new Playing season is nearly upon us. Most Club teams are back in training in the Astros and the Gym and as the weather improves it will be back out on the pitches once more. Already the Pitch Booking system is filling up as dates and times are slotted in for the various groups. There is an ongoing debate at East Cork Board level about the June/July date for the Junior A Grade Football championship games. Hopefully this will have been resolved at this week’s Board meeting. Killeagh’s Damien Irwin has been appointed Assistant Secretary of the Divisional Board. Elected Development Officer at the end of 2022 Damien’s tenure in this position was brief as the role of Development Officer at Divisional Borad level was abolished last year.

JUVENILE CLUB COACHING SEMINAR.
The Juvenile Club held a very successful Seminar in the Clubrooms recently which was very informative to all 50 coaches that turned up. The guest speaker was Shane Smith. Shane travelled from Dublin to share his insights into player retention and meeting our juvenile players needs as a coach. Shane has mentored male and female players from Academy to Senior level including a three year term at Kilmacud Crokes which culminated the Dublin Club winning the All Ireland football crown. Overall it was a great night of information sharing which can only benefit all our Trainers and Coaches.
CORK STILL WITH NO WIN
The NHL game with Kilkenny on Saturday night was truly the ‘match two halves’ Kilkenny could do no wrong in a one sided first half and then Cork thundered into the contest in the second half. The Rebels briefly led and were unlucky not to have got a draw at least. Well done to Brian and Eoin and also to Cormac Barry who was with the Cork Minor team that defeated Kilkenny in a challenge game. Cork have three game to play v Waterford, Offaly and Wexford. Results here are vital; to avoid ending up in Division 2 next year.
JOIN BRIDE ROVERS CLUB 100.
A few years back as we began planning for our Club’s centenary in 2028 the Club 100 concept was put in place. With projected spending of close to One Million Euro in the coming years the need for several ‘finance streams’ is vital. The Club 100 is a method whereby supporters and benefactors of the Club can commit to financially helping the Bride Rovers GAA Club. All finance raised has gone into major Club developments in recent years. Now with massive 3 pitch Development project in Ballybrowney well under way we will need huge funds over the next decade. CAR BOOT SALE ‘THANK YOU’
The Parish Development Committee which runs the monthly Car Boot Sale invite all those who give their voluntary hours to help run the Car Boot sales to a ‘Thank You’ event. It will be held in our Clubrooms in the pitch on Tonight Thursday February 15th at 8pm. Since it’s inception the Rathcormac Car Boot Sale has been a wonderfully positive initiative in the parish. Huge financial benefit have accrued to so many groups and associations from the funds raised. It’s all down to completely voluntary effort and great credit is due to ech and every person who lends a hand.
WALKING GOING WELL.
Just two more Monday nights Feb 19th and Feb 26th remain in the Light Up For Ireland series. Great credit to Orla Dorgan, Catherine Hegarty and Brenda Ryan as key the organisers along with members of our catering group also helping to provide post-walk tea/coffee. It might only be Early February but the pitch is a hive of activity. The Walking Group are walking in our 'lit-up' walkway at main pitch, with many of our underage players having returned to training on all-weather and on the floodlit juvenile field. Some walkers are walking from the pitch, through the village to the community field. It’s entirely up to each individual to decide the duration and distance. It’s a brilliant initiative and well done to everyone..
GAA CONGRESS.
The Annual GAA Congress takes place in Newry the weekend after next. Highlight of the weekend will be the installation of Jarlath Burns of Armagh as the President of the Association for the next three years. ‘If at first you don’t succeed try and try again’ was surely the Silverbridge Clubman’s motto after he was defeated in the 2020 Election.
Amongst the 25 Motions to be discussed on the Friday night and Saturday morning is one from Cork re players playing both Senior and under 20 Inter County Hurling. The Cork motion reads; U20 Hurling: A player is restricted from playing in both the Inter-County Senior Hurling Championship and the Inter-County Under 20 Hurling Championship within a 60-hour period and Committees in Charge of the latter grade competition shall make such allowance where necessary in its scheduling". U20 Football: A player is restricted from playing in both the Inter-County Senior Football Championship and the Inter-County Under 20 Football Championship within a 60-hour period and Committees in Charge of the latter grade competition shall make such allowance where necessary in its scheduling". Rest of Rule to remain unchanged. It’s a common sense motion and hopefully will be passed. Killeagh’s Tracey Kennedy is going forward in the Election for the position of GAA Trustee.

NIALL LONG RIP.
All of the older generation in the Club were saddened last week when we heard the news of the death of Niall Long. Niall was a native of Glanmire. Himself and his brother JJ gave years of service as outstanding payers with both Sarsfields and Glanmire Clubs. In the early 1970’s the Long brothers purchased what was known as the Ring’s Cross Public House. Niall threw in his lot with us in Bride Rovers.
1975 J B Hurling team NIall Long on left middle row.
Though in his mid 30’s he was still a wonderfully skilled hurler and fitness was never a problem for him. He played on the A grade team that lost the 1974 semi final to Cloyne. The following year Niall lined out at centre forward on the Junior B grade team captained by Pat O Connor. Wins over Carrigtwohill, Dungourney, St Catherines and Cobh saw us into the East Cork Final. Our opponents were a fancied St Itas team. In Carrigtwohill on Sunday October 26th we played the Final. St Itas led by 1 4 to 0 5 at half time -Niall scored two great point in that opening half. St Itas went three points ahead before a great goal from Johnny Bary levelled the game. In a welter of excitement e got three points from Harry Gettings and Seanie Barry(2) to win by 1 8 to 1 5. After selling the b Niall transferred to Whites Cross winning another B grade medal with them. He played on with Sras until well in his 40’s. He was great hurler and a great character and was looking forward to a 5oth Anniversary gathering of the 1975 team next year. We extend our sympathy to Niall’s family and his sisters. May he rest in peace. We also extend sympathy to Eamon O Neill and his siblings on the death of his mother Anne of Roche’s Terrace Midleton. May she rest in peace.
