Happy Birthday Tommy..
This week we wish a very Happy Birthday to Club stalwart Tommy Barry. For over seventy years Tommy has been a member, officer, selector and supporter of our Club. Last week Tommy celebrated hiss 88th Birthday and everyone in the Bride Rovers Club extend our very west wishes to Tommy and his wife Nellie. Both of them have been hospitalised in recent times but are home now in Kilshannig and in great form again.
A lifelong GAA member Tommy is best remembered for his great service as Club Treasurer from 1969 until 1982. He also served as a Junior Hurling and football selector down the years. In conversation with Tommy this week he recalled fundraising through the decades and he is a so proud of all our recent Developments and very supportive of all the plans we have for the development of our three new pitches. Best wishes to Tommy and Nellie from each and everyone in the Bride Rovers Club.
WALKING GOING WELL.
Just three more Monday nights, Feb 12th, Feb 19th and Feb 26th remain in the Light Up For Ireland series. Great credit to Orla Dorgan, Catherine Hegarty and Brenda Ryan as key the organisers along with members of our catering group also helping to provide post-walk tea/coffee. It might only be Early February but the pitch is a hive of activity. The Walking Group are walking in our 'lit-up' walkway at main pitch, with many of our underage players having returned to training on all-weather and on the floodlit juvenile field. Some walkers are walking from the pitch, through the village to the community field. It’s entirely up to each individual to decide the duration and distance. It’s a brilliant initiative and well done to everyone..
NO LEESIDE LEAGUE LUCK
A double defeat for the hurlers in Ennis and the footballers in Ardee meant it was a blank weekend in regards gathering League Points. Brian and Eoin Roche lined out with the hurlers in Cusack Park in a tough tussle. Clare led from the start but Cork rallied well in the second half and could easily have snatched a win. It’s an ‘Old Firm Derby’ this coming Saturday night when Kilkenny after a draw at home to Wexford come to Pairc Ui Chaoimh for a 7.30pm start. Cork and Kilkenny usually bring the bet out of each other so it should be a cracker. Two losses mean John Clery’s side have an uphill battle now in facing Cavan, Meath, Armagh and Fermanagh- nothing soft there.

GREAT CREDIT TO CHA.
Well done and congratulations to Charlie ‘Cha’ McCarthy of Fermoy for getting involved in a major way with Cork GAA. With so much talk of sponsorship it’s marvellous to see a local and hugely successful business become a major Sponsor of Gaelic Games here in Cork. It was back in 1952 that Charlie McCarthy and his wife Eily nee Cahill set up an Insurance business in the town of Fermoy. Over the last six decades the McCarthy Insurance Group headed by Charlie and then Cha has become a huge player in the Irish Insurance market. From Fermoy the Company now has branches all over Cork and in Kerry, Waterford, Limerick and Dublin. Just recently McCarthy Insurance Group have become the Sponsors of the Cork County Football Championships and Leagues. Coming from Fermoy, a town with a wonderful Gaelic Football history this is indeed a wonderful example of a local company putting finance back into the GAA. The arrangement between Cork GAA and the McCarthy Insurance Group is a great news story and we say well done to Cha and all his popular staff in Fermoy and across the country.
UNDER’12 GETTING READY.
The Under12 hurler and footballers return to the training pitch on Saturday Feb 24th. As this group of players move from Go Games to competitive matches for the first time; grading, keeping 34 lads playing games and schedules will ensure that all of us will be busy in the coming months. Having said that, we always welcome new players to the club, or indeed players who might like to come back after a break. This month of February everyone is welcome back into the fold, so if you'd like to join the boys of 2012, please contact Paddy on 087-9018119. We will be training to improve the skill levels in both hurling and football in an enjoyable and fun atmosphere
GRADAM AN UACHTARAIN .
On last Friday night GAA President Larry McCarthy presided over the last major function of his three year Presidency in Croke Park. The Presidents Awards are presented annually to people who have given outstanding service to the GAA. On Friday night the Cahalane family of Castlehaven, St Finbarrs and Eire Og were recipients of the Dermot Early Family Award. It was well deserved award for a great Gaelic family.

‘IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER’
The 1993 film based on the fate of the Guildford Four was the overall winning ‘film’ at a packed Silverbridge GAA Centre in South Armagh on Saturday night last. Eleven hundred people crammed into the Club Hall for a great night as part of the Club’s £300,000 fundraising effort. The finances raised will help build a new state of the art Club Gym onto the Hall. Go n-eiri an t-adh leo leis an obair. In two weeks time the Club Runai Jarlath Burns will take over as GAA President. Jarlath will be seen as the second ‘Armagh’ President though Alf Murray, President from 1964 -1967, was actually born in Dromore Co Down. Also a teacher Alf played for the Armagh SF team from 1935 to 1945 and for many years with his club Clann Eireann. He was a teacher in Tannaghmore School. He loved the Irish language. He served as Armagh Co Secretary and Ulster vice Chairman and Chairman before being elected President. Alf O Muiri died in 1999.
HURLING IN BARTLEMY SCHOOL - 1930’s
The late Garrett Dooley recalled his ‘sporting’ time in Bartlemy National School in the early 1930’s “At lunchtime we scoffed the lunch in two bites and threw the rest to the crows. We played hurling, we tossed for captains and we tossed for first call for the captains to pick the teams. All the hurleys were made of sticks from the hedges and shaped as best we could with a bill-hook. A lot of players went back to class with cuts on hands and legs and blood flowing. Eventually the master bought us a football. He tried to ensure we spoke Irish only which we did to the very best of our ability –‘Buala, buala’ rang out until at a very tense moment the captain shouted a profanity! The master said ‘that is not in my book’, ‘No sir, It’s the captains instructions’ We all paid for it afterwards!

Great Goalies
Memories of great hurling goalkeepers came flooding back last weekend. The death announced in Tallow of Ned Power who was the Waterford goalie in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. He played in two All Irelands 1959 and 1963 and won his All Ireland medal in 1959 when the Decies beat Kilkenny in a replay. He was a teacher and also a top class hurling coach – indeed the whole concept of coaching could be said to have been the brainchild of Ned Power. All in Bride Rovers extend our sympathy to his wife and family and other relatives.
On Sunday Waterford Hurling Champions Ballyduff travelled to Ennis to take on Clare champions Tulla. Unfortunately the absence of 2 team members was a major hurdle for Ballyduff and the Clare champions progressed to the Munster Final. Tulla of course gave the GAA the legendary Dr. Tommy Daly. Daly was classed as being one of the best ever hurling goalies – back in the 1920’s and 1930’s. He lies buried “On the windswept hill of Tulla where the Claremen place their dead.” Despite this defeat its been a brilliant year for Ballyduff who epitomised “the pride of the little village”. NOTE. The very famous picture of Ned Power soaring up to clutch the sliotar is reproduced magnificently in the Statue commemorating the Great Waterford No 1, on the Fermoy Road near Tallow Bridge.
