Lighting up for Ireland and walking going well..
The 2024 series of Monday night walks in the pitch continued last Monday night. The previous Monday, on Week 2, it had been a bitterly cold night with around 100 which was great. This week after a stormy, wet weekend weather conditions were somewhat better. It’s great to see so many out for a bit of healthy exercise. New walkers are always welcome so just come along any night. The Lighting up For Ireland continues for the next 5 Monday nights starting at 7.30pm. Walk as fast or slow and as much or as little as you want and are able to. Ther’s no timing or personal bests so no pressure on anyone.

WELL DONE KATIE AND SARAH.
No doubt in a few yeas time ‘twill be a great Quiz Question- “Who was the only Bride Rovers player to get 100% of a Cork teams score in a national league game against Cork”? the answer of course is Katie Quirke who achieved that record-breaking feat in Boshopstown on Sunday last. In the teeth of Storm Isha the ladies teams of Cork and Galway met in awful conditions in their opening league encounter. Playing with the wind in the first half Cork led by six po9nts to one at the break. Katie raised the white flag six times in the opening thirty minutes, three from play and three from frees. It was decent lead but Galway had the elements at their backs in the second half and did come into the contest. Katie took on three defenders for the crucial score of the game in the second half, a great goal in the 38th minute. Well done Katie on a superb display and well done also to Sarah Murphy who kept a clean sheet between the posts on a tough day for any kind of sport. I think I read of a player from the parish scoring 100 % of the Rathcormac teams’ total back in 1889 -but then the Rathcormac side won that 21 a side contest on a scoreline of 0 1 to 0 0 ! Well done again Katie and Sarah, two great models for all our younger players in the Club. Cork girls have a home tie v Armagh next Sunday, they face Kerry on Feb 2nd, Waterford on Feb 18th, Mayo on March 3rd and v Dublin on St Patrick’s Day.
LEAGUE FIXTURES.
Our opening Red FM 2024 Senior Hurling League Fixture is on Sunday March 10th when Carrigaline are the visitors. This will be our first time meeting the South East team at this level. After that we face Midleton, away, the Barrs at home and Courcey Rovers, away.
FIFTY YEARS AGO., 1974.
Having contested the 1972 and 1973 East Cork Junior Hurling Championship Finals hopes were high going into 1974. Though we’d lost the 1972 final to Dungourney and lost in a replay to Erins Own the following year we still had a good strong cohort of our 1968/69 winning teams still available. For 1974 David John Barry was re-elected Chairman for the eight year in a row. Jimmy Meade was elected Vice Chairman with Tony Walsh Secretary, John Meade Assistant Secretary and Tom Barry Treasurer. For our opening A grade hurling First Round game against Midleton we had two newcomers on the side Galway (Cappataggle) born John Byrnes and Niall Long who had recently purchased the Rathcormac Inn. We defeated Midleton by 1 8 to 1 5 with Seamus Collins scoring our goal. In the second round in Castlelyons we beat St Catherines by 2 11 to 2 2. The semi final was against our ‘bogey’ team of that era, Cloyne. In an epic game in Midleton the following team lost out by 3 10 to 2 8.; Pat Hoskins, Niall Long, Brendan O Driscoll, Tony Walsh, Matt Lehane, Paudie Murphy, Paudie Collins, Seamus Collins, Tommy O Flynn 0 2, Fachtna O Driscoll 0 4, Sean Murphy 0 1, Pat Sheehan 1 0, Davy Hogan 1 0, John Meade 0 1, Mossy Dooley, Sub Johnny Barry. After a ten week wait Cloyne lost the East Cork Final to Watergrasshill who went on to defeat Delaneys, Aghabullogue and Charleville in the County Junior Hurling Final.
MUNSTER LEAGUE GONE.
Weather in the shape of frost and then Storm Isha meant that Cork and Limerick Senior Hurlers never got to play their Cop Superstores Senior League semi Final last week. Mick Neville Park in Rathkeale was twice pencilled in as the venue. In the end t just didn’t happen. The Competition will not now be finished.
MEETINGS
The first meeting of the East Cork Board for 2024 was held in Midleton GAA Pavilion last night as the Board celebrates it’s 100th Anniversary.
NAMING RIGHTS.
After all the talk about Stadium Naming rights it’s interesting to note that Padraig O Caoimh after whom Pairc Ui Chaoimh is named was married to Peggy O Keeffe from Ballynoe. Though born in Co. Roscommon O Caoimh spent his formative years in Cork where he worked as a teacher, a Full Time Volunteer Leader and also in a tobacco Company. He was appointed Secretary of the GAA in 1929 on an 11 to 10 vote of Central Council members, defeating dual All Ireland medallist Frank Burke. O Caoimh was a brilliant organiser, an inspiring leader and visionary in terms of what he wanted for and worked towards in the years ahead for the GAA. As regards matters financial O Caoimh was as GAA writer Marcus de Burca said ‘meticulous’. For example in 1930 the GAA bought a new horse to pull the horse-drawn mower for the Croke Park pitch. The price of the horse was £11 and in the Financial Records for 1931 he depreciated the value of the animal by £5. Padraig O Caoimh died in 1964 and is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin.
CLUB FINALS.
Well after two weekends the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Club Finals have been played in Croke Park. All three Club Titles went to Ulster with Arva of Cavan, Cullyhanna of Armagh and last Sunday Watty Graham’s of derry taking the Cups North. Kilkenny were deprived of the ‘Hurling ‘Trile Crown’ on Sunday when galway’s St Thomas’ won the Tommy Moore Cup. Club Final Day is such an emotional occasion for all involved. The St Thomas goalkeeper Gerald Kelly had lost his mother just last week and in a pre-match interview he spoke tearfully of visiting her grave before each game. What can one say of Watty Graham’s of the Glen/ After their 2023 Final debacle it took some effort to get back to Croke Park. In truth they looked dead and buried with ten minutes to go but then the mighty Conor Glass just took the game by the scruff of the neck in an amazing finish. Interestingly in the All Ireland Intermediate Final the previous week when Cullyhanna defeated Cill na Martra from the Muskerry Gaeltacht ,young Duffy from the South Armagh Club who was selected as man of the Match is a grandson of the late singer Big Tom McBride.
14 EACH.
Galway Clubs now have won 14 All Ireland titles in the last thirty years, exactly the same number as Kilkenny clubs yet at All Ireland inter county level Kilkenny have won four times more Senior Titles than Galway.

SYMPATHY.
The Bride Rovers Club extends it’s deepest sympathy to the O Brien family of Killaloe, Co. Clare. Just last week Eddie ‘Georgie’ O Brien formerly of Sunnyside, Rathcormac died unexpectedly at his home in Co. Clare. It was double tragedy for the family as Eddie’s wife Mary passed away on Christmas Eve. To their sons Wesley and Trevor we extend our sympathy also to Eddies brother Jimmy and sisters Nuala and Geraldine. The O Brien and Hoskins families are synonymous with everything to do with the Bride Rovers Club down the years.
BRIDE ROVERS CLUB SPONSORS are; Rathcormac Tyres, Fermoy Print & Design, Gerard Gubbins Construction and Veolia
