Proud day for Bride Rovers..
Last Sunday in Pairc Ui Chaoimh was County football Final day. Truly the West Was Awake as both Cill na Martra and Castlehaven won their County Titles. Seldom enough over the years has Bride Rovers had such an involvement in a Major Football Final. In recent times Raymond Hegarty has been on umpiring duty in Croke Park and elsewhere and last Sunday was a Red-letter day for the Club in terms of officials on duty. Pa O Driscoll our present Club Chairman was the man given the task of refereeing the County Premier Senior Football Final between Castlehaven and Nemo Rangers. His two linesman were former Club Chairman James Bermingham and Mike Carey -our Club Runai. Club members Brendan O Driscoll, another former Club Chairman, Seamus Buckley and Michael Keating were on umpiring duty along with Watergrasshill’s Jimmy Ryan while James O Regan from the Lough Rovers Club was the 4th Official. Pa is the second Rovers Ref to handle a Co SFC with James Bermingham being the first. For Gaeltacht Club Cill na Martra the victory means they are now a Senior Club for the first time ever. For Kilnamartyra native Joan Cooney, for many years the woman who practically ran the GAA in Croke Park, last Sunday was a very special occasion. Castlehaven in winning their 6th County SFC title continue to demonstrate the old maxim ‘it’s not the size of the dog n the fight but the size of the fight in the dog, that matters’- they are an amazing Club. Drawing from a small rural area with the sea at one side they continue to produce brilliant players, well done to the Haven.
ANDY SCANNELL CUP.
After last Sunday’s County Senior Football Final in the Park the County Championship Cup was presented to Mark Collins the proud Castlehaven captain. The trophy for the Cork SFC is the Andy Scannell Cup. Andy Scannell was born in Ballingeary in 1903. He qualified as a national teacher. He was a great hurler, footballer and GAA administrator. His wife Ellen Wrin NT taught in the old Bartlemy School in Hightown from 1932 until 1944. After her marriage to Andy Scannell the couple lived in the Teacher’s House at Hightown. At that stage Andy was NT in Clondulane. They later moved to Clondulane. Mrs Scannell was unable to drive at that stage and 14 year old Joseph Mc Mahon, son of the Clondulane Railway Station Master, used drive Mrs Scannells’ car to Bartlemy each day! The Bride Rovers Club was founded in 1928 and two years later Andy joined the Club and was on the first East Cork winning Junior hurling team when they defeated Leeside in the Final by 5 2 to 0 1. Andy Scannell went onto be a leading GAA administrator in Avondhu, Cork and Munster. He died at his home in Clondulane in1959. His brother Donal taught in Bartlemy NS in the 1950’s before transferring to Ballinora NS
BARTLEMY IN SCIATH NA SCOIL FINAL.
On Wednesday November 15th the football team from Bishop O Brien NS Bartlemy will be taking part in the County Sciath na Scoil Final in Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Their opponents are unbeaten Ballynoe NS and the Final is timed for 1 o clock. Best of luck to all involved and win lose or draw involvement in the Sciath na Scoil will only improve the skills of our players.
JERARD KENNY TOURNAMENT ON SATURDAY.
The annual Jer Kenny Memorial Tournament takes place this weekend at Páirc Na Bride. It is a six team tournament with two groups of 3 teams in the under 11 grade. Group 1 is the Cup and is made up of Bride Rovers, Carrigtwohill and Mallow. Group 2 is Bride Rovers 2, Carrigtwohill 2 and Fermoy. It’s an 11 a side hurling Tournament with both a cup and a shield final to be played on the day.
We look forward to a great few hours of hurling to remember Jer Kenny and his family who have been so supportive to the Bride Rovers Cub over the years.

Our County semi final in the Rebel Og under 15 hurling championship is fixed for the Bishopstown 4G pitch on this Saturday Nov 4th . Throw-in for our game against Ibane Gaels is at 12.30

All in Bride Rovers extend very best wishes to the Mitchelstown intermediate football team who play Aghabullogue next Sunday in the County Final in Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Town have been there or thereabouts in the concluding stages of this grad with a few years now. Hopefully they can win on Sunday gainst the Mid Cork side bidding for a hurling/football double.
UNDER 21 HURLING.
Earlier this year a discussion took place at the East Cork Board re the feasibility of running under 21 Divisional Competitions- they are not being run for 2023 at County level. It was agreed top go ahead with East Cork competitions in the autumn/winter period so they are now underway. We were graded in the A competition. We are in a group with Sarsfields and Killeagh. It’s been difficult to get dates and then, because of the weather, pitches. Our first group game was at home to Sars last Saturday in Pairc na Bride. With a couple of our players missing through injury we still had a panel of 21. Sars came on a high after winning the County Senior championship and played some really good hurling in the first twenty minutes. They combined very well and going in at the break leading by a margin of two points they looked impressive. The second half was equally as tight with both teams giving their all for a victory. Thankfully we got some great scores and ran out winners on a scoreline of 4-9 to 3-10 Panel;Ronan O Riordan, Cormac O Sullivan, Denis Cashman, Liam Collins, David Barry, Conor Hazelwood, Adam Hynes, Ronan O Connell, Josh Ahern, Louie Roche, Cillian Tobin, Frank O Flynn, Edmund Cashman, Adam Walsh, Adam Hayes, John Buckley, Nicky Kelleher, Kieran Cotter, Cillian Barry, Ryan O Callaghan, Oran Kielty, Ben Knox. The selectors are Mark O Connell, Barry Hazelwood and Aidan Hayes also thanks to Daniel Dooley and Jason Pratt who are part of the management team this year and our physio Darren Cody. Sarsfields are down to play Killeagh in Pairc Ui Chinneide, Killeagh on Sunday week November the 12th and our game against Killeagh in Pairc na Bride.has yet to be fixed.
ST COLMANS WIN.
Well done to St Colman’s hurlers who defeated Pobalscoil an Trionoide, Eochaill in the Harty Cup last week. St Colmans will now face Tulla CBS on November 15th in their last group game -it’s a ‘must win’ game for the Fermoy School if they are to advance to the knockout stages of the competition.
ST CATHERINES ON THE ROAD.
St Catherines make the short journey to historic Fraher Field in Dungarvan on Saturday to take on St Declan’s of Ardmore in the Munster |Junior Hurling Club Championship. The game has a 1.30 throw-in and will be shown live on Munster GAA TV. Best wishes to Denis Walsh and his team. Best of luck also to Cork Senior champions Sarsfields on their Sunday trip to meet ten-in-a-row Waterford Champions Ballygunner in Walsh Park. Good Luck also to Lisgoold Junior A Footballers who meet Canovee this weekend in the County JAFC.

A fine sporting team from a great sporting Club Newcestown are in with a great chance of a County ‘Double’ On Sunday next they play Dohenys in the SAFC Final and we send them our best wishes

The Bride Rovers GAA Club Annual general Meeting will be held on Monday November the 20th in the Clubrooms at 8pm. All members and intending members are welcome to attend. Forms for Nominating Officers and submitting motions will be sent to all members.
25 YEARS AGO. October is gone but memories of October 1998 will never fade. That was the month, a quarter of a century ago, when Bride Rovers staged a comeback, the mother and father of all comebacks, in the county Junior Hurling semi final in Pairc Ui Rinn. Two minutes into the second half of that game against Ballinascarthy we were 8 points down on a scoreline of 1 9 to 0 4. A few weeks after beating Dungourney in the East Cork Final our chances of reaching the County Final seemed like a dream turning into a nightmare. But, as the song -Our Song, says ‘When hot grew that fight those hearts grew more eager’. We just hurled and hurled and turned that match around and then late, late in the contes Batt Mc Hugh put us ahead 1 14 to 1 13 and when the final whistle went it was sheer joy and disbelief. Niall Fitz and Barry Murphy hadn’t much time to celebrate as Co Secretary Frank Murphy asked them to travel -there and then, with the Cork Hurling team to Belfast. The next day Cork beat an Ulster section in a game to mark the opening of the St Theresas Club grounds. The night of the Ballinascarthy game we had a mighty gathering for Georgie Johnsons’ birthday in The Pound Bar Kildinan.
BOYLAN OUTSTANDING.
Conor Boylan was one of the stars for Na Piarsaigh who won their 8th Limerick SHC crown on Saturday when they beat Patrickswell in the decider. Conor is son of Dr David Boylan -former Dungourney and Midleton hurler. Conor’s great grandmother was Mary Woods from Bartlemy.
