      Seniors Out..

At Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Saturday afternoon our Senior Hurlers were defeated in the refixed County semi final. Much has been written and spoken about the controversy surrounding the playing of this game and unfortunately an awful lot of mis-information was circulated. We beat Blarney in a penalty shoot-out after extra time three weeks ago. Blarney objected because they claimed we had sixteen players on the field. This happened late in the extra time. It was not a deliberate attempt by Bride Rovers to gain any advantage. A mix up happened but this in absolutely no way affected the play.  The referee in his Match Report made this very clear, we had an extra player for 11 seconds and the sliotar was in play for 8 of those seconds. The Rule states that three Penalties can be applied depending on the circumstances; forfeiture of the game, a replay or a fine. Given the Referees report stated that during that period of time our substitute was not involved in the actual play in any way we expected a Fine for a minimum  Rule breach. Everyone in the Club was stunned when a replay was ordered. It was sickening and terrible decision for which there was no precedent whatsoever. In fairness the players and Club Executive decided against further Appeals and play the game. Last Saturday then it was back to Pairc Ui Chaoimh once more. We started well with two points from Adam Walsh. Though Blarney went ahead a point from Daniel Dooley made it 0 3 t 0 3 with quarter of an hour gone. The second quarter was a nightmare with Blarney scoring three goals, one from a penalty. We scored  eight time in the first half to Blarney’s 7 but we still trailed by 34 to 0 8 at half time. Cian O Connor and Jason Mannix came on at half time. Adam reduced the gap to just four points but after that Blarney took over again. A goal from a free by Cillian Tobin took the bare look from the scoreboard but we still lost by 3 15 to 1 12. Hard really to find words to describe both the loss and the circumstances around the game. It was gut wrenching and devastating for the players and management. They were in a County Final of a Saturday night and the following Friday they weren’t. The last two years we came up short against Fr O Neill’s in the semi final. This year we won the semi final and yet we are nowhere. As a Club Bride Rovers have had many ups and downs in the last 95 years but the least we thought we could expect was fair play and a sense of balance and natural justice. The players , the Club and the parish feel cheated. All we can say to our players and mentors is well done on a great campaign  and we’ll be back, have no doubt about that.

EXECUTIVE MEETING.Monday night’s Club Executive meeting was well attended despite to  pall of gloom after Saturdays game. Chairman Pa O Driscoll outlined all that had happened over the last two weeks. Anger, frustration and  pride in how the players reacted to the debacle were some of the feelings expressed. Team captain Eoin Roche thanked the team Management and Club for the support during the campaign. There was a lengthy Agenda with a lot of time devoted to the arrangements for next Sunday’s East Cork Junior Hurling Final between Carrignavar and St. Itas in Pairc na Bride at 3 o clock. Our AGM is fixed for Monday November the 20th. The sand-based pitch, the first of three new fields, has been completed and the grass is growing well. It is hoped to play matches there in the second half of next year. Best wishes for speedy recoveries were extended to Frank, Adrian and Teresa. Mossy O Sullivan thanked the members who participated in Scor recently. The next car Boot Sale is on Sunday November the 5th.

UNDER 12’s WIN LEAGUE

Last Friday evening our u12’s travelled to play our near neighbours Watergrasshill in the Shield final. Having drawn with them in the league earlier in the year we knew there was not going to be much between the two teams.

The Rovers lads played some lovely hurling throughout the first half to go in at halftime leading 2.2 to 1.1

After the break it was a tough battle with Watergrasshill throwing everything they had at the boys but the lads showed the Bride Rovers fighting spirit is also part of this team. The goal that separated the sides at the short whistle was still there at the finish and at the final whistle it was Bride Rovers who were lifting the trophy on a scoreline of 3.3 to 2.3.  Well done lads on a mighty win.

UNDER 11’S.The Under11s have had a quiet week and have been getting some extra training in as the season winds down. A dozen of our lads played in the Under12 shield final so well done to them and to all the Under12 players and mentors on a thrilling win last Friday night over Watergrasshill. The drive around the village afterwards was this groups first experience of the wider community involvement in the club and it was great to see so many, young and old, out at their doors to wave at the lads on the victory drive. It was bringing it all back home in a very special way. Football training continues on Wednesday night with hurling on Saturday.

UNDER 13 FINAL v COBH

The Rebel Og under 13 East Division 1 Section 2 hurling final v Cobh has finally  been confirmed. The game will be played after the East Cork J Final in Rathcormac next Sunday for Sunday at 5 o clock. We had a good challenge game against Kiltha Og on Sunday last.  The lads worked hard and put in a good performance against a P1 team.  Cobh will be strong opposition on Sunday evening but go for it lads.

UNDER 15’S OUT IN THE COUNTY.

After their great win over mallow n the  Rebel Og North under 15 Final recently the team are out in the County on Saturday next. They travel to Passage West to take on the West Cork winners Ibane Gaels who are a combination of Kilbrittain and Barryroe. The match is timed for 2 in Passage, go for it lads.

EAST CORK FINAL. Next Sunday October we host the East Cork Junior Hurling Championship Final for just the third time ever. The contestants are from opposite sides of the Division Carrignavar from the ‘North’ and St Itas down by the sea in Gortroe. Both sides have made their ‘breakthrough’ at this level in modern times so it should be a great game. Throw-in is at 3 with Brian Sweeney from Erins Own the referee.  With a lot of rain this week we may not be abler to use the Juvenile Field for car Parking so patrons are urged to park in and around the Village, the Old School yard, the Parish Field, near the Rathcormac Inn, the Cork Road and the approach roads.

1998 TEAM.

It’s a quarter of a century since we travelled to Cobh in September of 1998. Without an A Grade hurling title since 11969 the team led by Donal Ryan. Made history that memorable day. A 2 13 to 2 6 win over Dungourney set off celebrations that went on for months. Winning the County later in the year was just a stunning achievement.  All the 1998 panel have been invited to attend next Sunday for a get- together and to parade as a proud team once more. Truly they were trail blazers on a truly epic adventure for the last twenty five years.

DOWN MEMORY LANE; While Galway played Kildare in the All Ireland SF Final in Croke Park on Sunday September the 27th we lined out against Dungourney they beat us in the 1972 Final, below in Cobh.  Early points from Terry, Mike and Donal put us  03 to 0 1 ahead after ten minutes. Dungourney went up a gal before Jerome goaled to level at 1 3 apiece.  We went in ahead by 1 7 to 1 3 We scored some great points to lead by 1 1 to 1 5 with twelve minutes left. Then with the huge Rovers crowd in full voice Terry made it 2 12 to 1 5  with a great goal. Dungourney did get a goal. l but we held on to win our fifth East Cork title by 2 13 to 2 6. The history making panel of players 25 years ago was Andrew O Flynn, Anthony Cahill, Niall. Fitzgerald, Alan Broderick, Pat Barry, Barry Murphy, Pat Walsh, Donal Ryan Captain, Batt O Connell, Padraig Murphy, James Murphy, Mike Hogan, Terry Broderick, Jerome O Driscoll, Sean Ryan, Batt McHugh, Richie Cahill Martin O Flynn, Cormac Howard, John O Dowd, Liam Barry, Mark O Connell, Mike Kearney, Dermot Johnson, Declan O Donovan. Amidst emotional scenes Bride Rovers Clubman and East Cork Board Chairman Gerard lane presented the Jamesy Kelleher Cup t team captain Donal Ryan. We defeated Ballinascarthy and  Freemount later to win out the County JAHC for a historic first time.

WELL DONE  CASTLELYONS. Congrats to Castlelyons on a brilliant win in the PIHC Final last Sunday with a late , late surge to reel in a gallant Kilworth. Two Finals and a semi final lost has been a tough few years for Castlelyons so they deserved this win. With a November Munster  Semi Final date against Ferrybank of Waterford or Crotta O Neill of Kerry Castlelyons could well be playing an All Ireland Club semi final just a week before Christmas. Well done to all concerned with this great win. Hard Luck to neighbours St Catherines who lost out by two points in the County Premier Junior Hurling Final last Saturday. Despite this loss the Saints can still set their sights on a Munster and maybe All Ireland Junior Hurling titles. They play Ardmore in the Munster Championship – Ardmore are trained by Darren Tobin from Castlelyons.

LADIES IN RELEGATION FINAL. Best of luck to our Senior ladies Football team who play Inch Rovers in the County Senior Relegation Final in Mayfield on Saturday.

OSKARS NIGHT. We had a fundraising Oskars Night arranged last Sunday night in Fermoy Youth Centre. Under the circumstances the crowd was small but it was a great night. Thanks to the girls who organised it and got prizes for the raffle
