Seniors in Action Saturday..

On what will be a really busy weekend on Leeside for East Cork teams we get matters off to a start in Cork GAA HQ on Saturday afternoon at 3 0 clock when we meet Blarney in the County Senior A Hurling Championship semi final. This is an all ticket affair and tickets must be prebought and prepaid for. For those who cannot attend the game it will be broadcast live on the Cork GAA Channell Rebels Online. Supporters are urged to come early as parking around the Stadium will be scarce. It should be a great game. Our lads have trained very well over the last two weeks and they have a steely determination to put up a good display.  We wish the team and management all the very best -go for it lads, the Club and Community are behind ye, c’mon the Rovers.

UNDER13s STILL WAITING.

Our under 13 hurlers still have no date for the Rebel Og  hurling League final. We organised a challenge against Inniscarra on Saturday in Inniscarra’s pitch at Ballyanley in the Muskerry Division..  For all the lads it had been four weeks since our last hurling game -we’ve been on the football trail since.  After a good hour’s hurling we came out on top on a scoreline of Bride Rovers 2-8 Inniscarra 0-8. This was a useful and badly needed workout for the lads.  Thanks to Mike Carey for stepping in as referee at short notice. Training continues on Wednesday and Saturday.

UNDER 15 HURLING.

The Under 15 hurlers are set to play Ibane Gaels (Timoleague/Barryroe) in the Rebel Og County Championship soon. The game was provisionally fixed for Saturday October 21st but this as yet to be confirmed.. The Ibane Gaels combination were impressive winners of the Rebel Og Western Divisional championship.

TERESA WALSH TOURNAMENT.

Bride Rovers Juvenile Club hosted the annual Under 14 Hurling Teresa Walsh Commemorative tournament in a splendidly prepared Pairc Na Bhride on Sunday morning last and the visiting teams this year were Charleville and Erins Own. The opening game saw the Rovers play Erins Own and it was the Glounthane / Little Island outfit that had the better of the opening exchanges with two early goals to put pressure on the home side. The lads duly awoke from their early slumber and started to take control of the game with some fine defending and some free flowing scores. This game was 30minutes long and the Rovers won out on a scoreline of 1-11 to 2-01 with the Rovers goal from Finn.

The second game was between Charleville and Erins Own and this one narrowly went the way of the Charleville outfit on a scoreline of 1-10 to 3-03.

With both Charleville and the Rovers having won their games against Erins Own - the last game was effectively a final with the teams agreeing to playing two 20 minute halves. This game was a tight affair with nothing between the sides for the first twenty minutes. The boys started strongly in the second half and put some distance between the sides with a fine goal from Mícheál and to delight the lads and the large support in attendance, Rovers won this one on a scoreline of 1-10 to 1-05.

It was fitting that Teresa's Grandson Mícheál Walsh who was captain of the Rovers lifted the cup and also was a hugely deserving winner of the player of the tournament award with both of these being presented by Brendan Walsh.

The boys that togged out for Bride Rovers on the day were: Mícheál Walsh (Capt.), Euan O'Grady, Conor Geaney, Conn Nagle, Ciaran O'Donovan, Finn O'Driscoll, Jeff O'Connell, Shane McCarthy, Shane Drinan, Mark Hynes, Tadhg Cronin, Daniel Gubbins, Donagh Hurley, Sebastian Byrd, Darren Kearney, Nathan Cahill, Cathal Barry, Calum Somers, Dylan Keating, Eaton Lees, Evan Quaine and Bobby Sweeney. Thanks to all who helped -referees, officials and a special ‘thank you’ to the Catering Committee for superb nourishment for all on the day.

TERESA- A VERY SPECIAL PERSON.

In any GAA Club there are fans and there are followers and there are supporters but most clubs also have a few special supporters who are just so dedicated and passionate about the games that they go to literally every single game. Distance or weather conditions make no difference. Nor does it matter whether the game is a challenge or a championship game. These people are the heart and soul and life of Clubs all over Ireland. Teresa Walsh was one such person. In the Bride Rovers Club we know of our long and proud, though not always successful, tradition. We speak of families who are third and fourth generation 'Rovers people'. Yet over the years into Bartlemy, Rathcormac and Kildinan have come so many new people and new families -people with no connection with the Club or Parish. 'Twas said about the Normans long ago that they became 'More Irish than the Irish themselves' and so it has been with so many people who have made their homes in our parish and got involved with the Bride Rovers Club. We never had an award for 'Supporter of the Year'  but if we had the late Teresa Walsh would surely have been a contender annually. Ollie and Teresa Walsh came to live in Ballinakilla, Bartlemy in 1971. Here they reared their five children who attended Bartlemy NS. All the young Walsh family got involved in sport, athletics, hurling, football and soccer were amongst their pursuits. From the time they were able to kick a ball or puck a sliotar they were encouraged by Ollie and Teresa who drove them all over Munster to sporting events. Pat and Brendan and son in law Andrew were integral members of the Bride Rovers Hurling team. Firstly at Junior, then Intermediate and then Senior.  When the Golden Era arrived for the Club the Walshs were at the heart of it -they still are.

(Teresa Walsh died in July 2016 and everyone in Bride Rovers GAA Club still miss her every day- she was like a special mother to us all)

Seldom enough does a team lose a game for spending too much time in a Public House- before the game! However that’s the fate that befell our Junior B grade footballers in June 1973. We were fixed to play Ballinacurra in the first round of the East Cork Championship in Carrigtwohill on Saturday night  June 30th.  From about 5  o clock that evening East Cork  was marred by a savage thunderstorm  with the ESB supply out all around Bartlemy and Rathcormac.  As was normal at that time the Bride Rovers players togged out in Willie Conroy’s Public House on Main St. When the rain ceased the Rovers players walked the short distance to the Carrig pitch. As we went in we met the Ballinacurra players going home.  The referee told them he presumed that Bride Rovers were not coming and he awarded the game to the ‘Village’. One of our players, Sean Murphy, had actually driven to the game from Castlemartyr and was in the grounds before half 7 so the ref knew we were coming. That was the end of our Football campaign in 1973!

GREAT HURLING WEEKEND.

It’s going to be a super weekend for our neighbours in County Final Hurling Championship action on the banks of our Own Lovely Lee. On Saturday St Catherines will fly the Purple and Gold proudly as they take on Erins Own in the Co Premier Junior Hurling Final. Erins Own won the County Junior last year and are very experienced. A youthful St Catherines will  give them a great game and might well come out on top. Having lost 2 PIHC Finals in recent years Castlelyons were always mentioned as likely finalists again this year. On Sunday afternoon they face a likely Kilworth side with nothing to lose. It should be a cracker of a match. Later then in Cork’s ‘Little All Ireland’ Eastern rivals Midleton and Sarsfields meet for the famed Sean Og Murphy trophy. Both have won the title in recent years so this should be a cracker. Best of luck to all our neighbours and friend who will hurl this weekend on the banks of Our Own Lovely Lee.

UNDER 6 BLITZ.

It was an absolutely amazing experience for those present las Saturday morning in Pynes Field. Close on 70 young boys and girls gathered for a few hours of fun.  Our combined boys and girls under 6 teams gathered for a mixed blitz. All born in 2017 or later it’s fantastic to see how in a short few months these young Rovers have come t love hurling and football. It may well be decade before any play with Cork -and some will, but in the meantime they will be learning and improving their skill levels in both our native Gaelic games. Hurling was recently inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It is the oldest and fastest field sport in the world, dating back almost 3,000 years and features strongly in Irish mythology. All that information wont trouble or bother our Young Rovers as they make friends and practise the basics. Well done to all the players, parents and mentors involved in a memorable event.

MIGHTY SCRAP.
