Semi Final Sensation !

Since the Bride Rovers Club was formed 95 years ago we have contested just 4 Adult Cork County Finals- Intermediate Hurling in 1933 and 2003, Junior Hurling in 1998 and Senior Hurling in 2008.  Most of us remember the semi final wins over Ballinascarthy(1998), Youghal (2003) and Erins Own in 2008. They were absolutely unforgettable, momentous days for the Club. On these occasions the excitement was ninety as it was in 2012 in Pairc Ui Rinn when we won the ‘Slan Leat’ (Relegation) Final against Cloyne.  All these were surpassed in Pairc Ui Chaoimh last Saturday night when we met Blarney in the Coop Superstores Senior A Hurling Championship semi -final.  A game that started as the Angelus Bells rang out over the River Lee ended nearly two hours later. It was a hurling match that everything -great scores, superb defending, nail-biting finish, the extra time and then down to penalties to decide the issue.   I met people on Sunday night who were still exhausted after the match and they were sitting in the Stand!  After a morning of heavy rain last Saturday afternoon was still drizzly for the first semi between Carrigtwohill and Newcestown which the battle-hardened Newcestown side won. By six o clock the rain was nearly stopped and in fairness the playing surface was superb.  Padraig Power  had Blarney ahead in the first minute  but Kieran Kearney soon levelled and when Josh Ahern gave a good pass to Brain Roche the white flag was waving again. It was end to end stuff  A great point from Daniel Dooley followed by a beauty from Ronan O Connell saw us 4 / 2 ahead.  Blarney got a point nback. Then in the tenth minute Cork player mark Coleman -who started the match, made it 0 4 apiece after he cut over a sideline ball.  Our backs were tight but it was up front that we got well on top. Two points from Adam Walsh- either side of a Brian Roche special put us 0 7 to 0 4 ahead. At this point we seemed in control and were hurling well from Cian in goals all through the field.  Blarney finished the first half strongly and made it 9 points each after 60 minutes. An injury time point from Conleith saw us go to the dressing-rooms a point in front 0 10 to 0 9 having played against a slight enough breeze. Adam had the first score of the second half, a point, and was involved in the next score. Josh Ahern  passed the sliotar to Roan and  he gave to Adam who shot for goal. The Blarney keper Conor Murphy saved well but Ronan was on hand to raise the green flag. We now had a five point lead and looked as if we were really getting on top. Back came Blarney however, mark Coleman got a point back before Adam sent over a free. Nearly ten minutes passed before the next score  from Coleman, followed by points from Barrett, Power and Mulcahy and our lead was just a point. From there ‘til the end it was close battle. Paddy O Flynn made a great block on a goal-bound shot from Coleman.  We went two ahead but the Mid Cork men levelled the game. With five minutes to go Blarney went a point ahead but we hit back with scores from Ronan and Conleith to take the lead once more 1 16 to 0 18. As excitement and tension mounted Barrett levelled again. A mighty score from William Finnegan gave us a late, late lead but Dunlea sent over a great long distance point to see the game end in a draw 1 17 to 0 20. Extra time then with two tired teams still producing great hurling. Blarney lead by 0 23 to 1 19 after the first ‘half’ of extra time- eleven minutes played.  Points from Brian and Adam had us one up but two mark Coleman gave Blarney the lead but on 80 minutes Adam levelled again. Then in the third of four added minutes of injury time in extra time Mark Coleman pointed a free. We thought ‘twas gone but from the puckout paddy Flynn was fouled. Pressure was sky high on Adam as he took that free from out near the sideline and he sent it straight and true to make it Blarney 0 26 Bride Rovers 1 23, what a game!   On then to a penalty shoot-out, a tough way to decide an important game.  Tense would be  very mild description of what followed. Cian Hogan stood up when it mattered. Cillian Tobin, William Finnegan and Adam Walsh had score for us and Blarney had converted two. Then William Crowley took the last Blarney penalty, we were 3 /2 ahead and Crowley had to score to keep his team in it and as ‘sudden death’ loomed Cian made a fantastic save to see us through. Whew what a game and what a display, well done lads and well done to Pat and Lia m and the backroom team.  A big ‘Thank You’ to our supporters who really backed the team through a marathon.Team C. Hogan, D. Cashman, P O Flynn, C.Hazelwood, K. Kearney 0 1,  E.Roche, S O Connor 0 1,  B.Roche 0 3,C. Tobin, C.Ryan 0 1, Ro Connell 1 3, A Walsh 0 10, J.Ahern 0 1, W. Finnegan 0 1,  D.Dooley 0 1. UNDER 13 HURLERS WAITING. We still no have no date for our Rebel Og under 13 Hurling final. The lads are training away and looking to organise a challenge match next weekend.

UNDER 15’ IN COUNTY. Our under 15 hurlers are awaiting confirmation from Rebel Og of their County championship fixture. Team captain Denis Fitzgerald  led his team to a great win over mallow in Kilworth recently. Young Denis’ great grandfather Patrick (Pad) Fitzgerald, a native of Fort Richard Bartlemy, was a founder member of the Bride Rovers Club in 1928. We thought to County fixture was this weekend and rearranged Club Tournaments to suit but now it looks likely to be the week end of Oct 14/15th.

BUSY REFS.   James Bermingham was on the whistle in Pairc Ui Rinn on Sunday night last when Duhallow defeated Douglas in the Co SFC. Earlier in the day Pa O Driscoll was on 4th Official Duty for the County Senior Hurling semi final in Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Next Sunday Pa is in charge of the Castlehaven v St Finbarrs County SFC semi final, Nemo Rangers will meet Duhallow in the second semi final.

HURLING BY BRIDE AND BLACKWATER.

With wins for St Catherines, Castlelyons, Kilworth and ourselves last weekend it was super few days for the game by Bride and Blackwater. St Catherines are guaranteed a Munster Championship game in early November. They will play St Declan’s of Ardmore. The West Waterford side won County, Munster and All Ireland Junior Hurling titles in 2018. Two of their better known players then, Seamus and Declan Prendergast are still on the tea and going strong One of the St Catherine’s young stars is  Oisin Fitzgerald -also a great, grandson of Bride Rovers Founding member Pad Fitzgerald! Our nearest neighbours Castlelyons will contest their 3rd PIHC final in four years when they meet Kilworth on Sunday week. With our parishes adjoining it’s no wonder that many of the Castlelyons lads have ‘roots’ in Bartlemy, Rathcormac and Kldinan- the Spillanes,  Barrys, Barry Murphy Leon Doocey and Oscar Hallihan all have relations or links  here!

GAA SPECIAL CONGRESS. The GAA held a special Congress last Saturday  in Croke Park to debate and vote on a variety of Motions varying from gender Equality on central Council Age Grades and All Ireland Quarter Finals. The news coming back is inter County Minor will stay at under 17 but Counties can have Minor at under 18 if they wish which is probably what Cork will do. Under 18 year olds cannot play Senior or Intermediate but probably will be allowed play Junior A, B or Junior C. If this proposal is adopted it will be of benefit to very small Clubs with limited numbers of players. A Special Convention will now have to be held in Cork in the coming weeks to finally decide on our Age Grades for next year.

LONDON COUNTY SHC FINAL. It will be a Brothers Pearse v Robert Emmetts London hurling final this year. On Saturday last Brothers Pearses aided by Pat Heffernan’s two sons Daithi (0 8) and Fionn (1 1) defeated Tomas McCurtains in the semi Final by 3 23 to 3 14. The Heffernan’s ‘Home’ Club is Blackrock (Kilfinane) in Limerick and another Blackrock lad will be lining out with Robert Emmett’s in the County Final!

BON VOYAGE FR SEANIE. This week sees Fr Seanie Barry return to his Mission work in Kenya and we wish him safe travelling. He was home on holidays and was able to see our game against Na Piarsaigh, Killeagh, Inniscarra and Blarney.
