Juniors Pipped..
Last Sunday we travelled to the well- prepared St Catherine's venue in Ballynoe for a noon throw-in against Killeagh in our East Cork JAHC Quarter Final game. We started brightly and Conor opened the scoring from a free within the 1st minute, Killeagh got the next two points before Conor got his second in the 5th minute. The teams exchanged the next four points to leave the sides level again after 10 minutes with our scores coming from Eddie and Conor. Killeagh had the better of the next ten minutes scoring the next 3 points before Eddie got his second score in the 20th minute to leave us trailing by 2. Killeagh went on another run of three points in a row before two points from Eddie and Conor saw the margin back to 3 points as we approached the half time break before disaster struck with Killeagh getting a goal just before the half time whistle.
A 6 point deficit at half time but what a second half. The lads turned to play down the hill and with the aid of the wind at the backs the lads thundered into the game in the second half. Seamus was introduced and had a immediate impact with a point in the 1st minute. Killeagh got the next two points before Conor and DJ responded with one each either side of a Killeagh point meant the gap was still 6 points 5 minutes into the 2nd half. A big moment came in the 6th minute when Shane finished to the back of the net to reduce the margin to 3 . The sides then shared the next 8 points with Shane, three from Conor leave the score 1-14 to 1-17 on the 55th minute mark. Our lads were beginning to dominate and another point from Conor reduced the margin to 2 in the 57th minute. Another pointed free a minute later from Conor had the margin back to the minimum. The referee advised of 5 minutes of added time and by now the game was end to end stuff before DJ got the equalising point for us in the 63rd minute. Both teams went in search of winning score in what was a hectic two minutes, we had claims for what might have been a free to us in the 5th minute of injury time but was judged to be a free out for Killeagh. From the resulting long puck disaster struck as Killeagh managed to pull on the ball into the goal net. We had one more attack to look for an equalising goal but to no avail and Killeagh advance to the East Cork semi-final vs Carrignavar with Cobh and St Itas in the other semi.
Team & Scorers: S Knox, J Connor, M Liddane, L Collins, A Hynes, L Forde, J Mannix, F Collins, C Barry (0-10), F O'Flynn, J Pratt, D Buckley, E Cashman (0-3), S Walsh (1-1), DJ Cahill (0-2) Subs; S Ahern (0-1) E O'Connor, R O'Riordan. This was our 1st year back in the Junior A grade and the team performed exceptionally well in all 3 matches and we can be very proud of their campaign. Well done lads and well done to the team management for an exceptional effort put in since last March.
BLARNEY IN SENIOR SEMI
Our Senior A Hurling County Semi-Final will be against Blarney following their 0-24 to 2-09 win over Cloyne. The Blarney boys were far too strong for the East Cork men at a misty Pairc Ui Chaoimh last Friday night. Though Cork Senior player Mark Coleman didn’t play in the first half the Mid Cork side were in control from the start and looked very impressive. Our semi-final game against Blarney game is fixed for Saturday 30th September at 6pm in Pairc Ui Chaoimh. The other semi between Carrigtwohill and Newcestown will be played at 4 o clock the same day.
SENIORS and THE ARMY.
On Wednesday night last under the light at Kilworth GAA Grounds, the Bride Rovers Senior hurlers played a very competitive challenge match against the Irish Defence Forces.
The Defence Forces senior hurling team were taking part in a training camp in Kilworth as preparation for their own championship and are coached by former Colmanite and Limerick star, Andrew O Shaughnessy- who played many a great game with St.Colman’s alongside many Bride Rovers hurlers.
The referee on the night was Thomas Walsh from Modeligo, Co. Waterford - an inter county referee. The Defence Forces fielding many senior inter county players started the brighter and set up a few threatening attacks which yielded some nice points. The rain started to pour down but this did not deflect from a good game. The Rovers forwards were in sharp form scoring some great points and working hard to put pressure on the Army. Overall it was a useful workout for both teams. Bride Rovers 2-13 Defence Forces 0-13.
Thanks to Kilworth GAA for hosting the game and thanks to Andrew & co. for the game. TEAM; C.Hogan, P. O Flynn, T O Sullivan, C. Hazelwood, K. Kearney, E. Roche, S. O Connor, B. Roche, C. Ryan, C. GAMES OVER WEEKEND.
Last Sunday was another busy occasion home and away. AS our Junior A grade hurlers took on Killeagh in Ballynoe the Junior Hurlers of Sars and Midleton met in Pairc na Bride in the 2023 Junior A Hurling relegation battle -won by Midleton. At the same time our under 12 camogie team were capturing County League honours at the Cork Camogie HQ at castle Road in Mahon. For good measure our Senior ladies took on Aghada in their Co. SFC campaign in the afternoon at Pairc na Bride.
CONNECTIONS. Our under 12 camogie captain on Sunday was Amy Murphy. Her great, great grandfather was Patrick (Patsy) Murphy and he captained the Rathcormac Football team to a County title in 1889. On Sunday last in castle Road the trophy was presented to Amy by Donncha Broderick of the Bishopstown Club -he’s Chairman of the Cork Juvenile Camogie Board. Donncha’s great, great grandfather John Murphy was a 1 st cousin of Patsy Murphy. Another player on Sunday with a long tradition was Kate O Donovan. Her great, great, great granduncle was William ‘Captain’ O Connell who was Captain of the Bartlemy Hurling team in the 1880’s.

SILVERBRIDGE OSKARS.
The big news from Ulster this week is that the Silverbridge GAA Club in Co. Armagh had their initial meeting this week to start making arrangements to hold a Night At The Oskars along the lines of what Bride Rovers had in the first half of this year. Incoming GAA President (he takes Office next February) Jarlath Burns, is the Silverbridge Club Runai. The Club have Spent over £1 million in developing their facilities over the years. Their own Club hall can hold over 600 people so the Oskars should be a great success in the Orchard County. At the weekend the proposed list of films to be recorded by Silverbridge included All The President's Men, Casablanca, Darby O Gill & the Little People, The Godfather, Jaws, The Quiet Man, Gone With The Wind and The Night of The Living Dead. We expect the Bridgee and Evelyn will be back home with us before Christmas!
SENIOR PREMIER HURLING.
I suppose 3 outta 4 aint bad. After a weekend of games in the Cork Premier Senor Hurling three of the last four in the semi finals are East Cork sides. In an Eastern Delight semi Sarsfields will meet Imokilly while Midleton take on 2022 co champions St Finbarr’s in the other penultimate game. Both Na Piarsaigh and Northside rivals Glen Rovers will be contesting the Senior A championship next year after Kanturk sent the Glen down after 97 years.
STOP PRESS _MORE SCRAP.

UNDER13s INTO 2 FINALS!
The under13s were away to Cobh on Tuesday evening under lights in the Holy Ground. We knew that avoiding defeat would guarantee a final spot. We were missing a few so just had fifteen to start. Thanks to Ollie for stepping up again to cover an injury. We got off to a great start with some great team scores, but Cobh got going and we were just a point up at half-time 2-5 to 2-4. The second half was very even again with both teams matching score for score with some excellent defending on both sides. It finished as a drawn game, 3-8 each. Probably a fair result and we will meet again in the final.
Training continues on Wednesday and Saturday. U 13 F L FINAL V AGHADA THIS COMING SATURDAY IN MAYFIELD AT 1 O CLOCK
EAST CORK UNDER 21 DRAWS.
The East Cork Board announced the grades and Groupings for the 2023 under 21 Hurling and Football competitions to be run in October and November. We are graded A in the hurling along with Killeagh and Sars. The other A group are Erins Own, Midleton and Carrigtwohill. In Football we are graded B along with Carrigtwohill, Glenville and Erins own.
MOVING HARTES.
Never a man to rest on his laurels former Tyrone maestro Mickey Harte has bade farewell to the Wee County of Louth after a two-year stint. The All Ireland winning manager with his native county has committed to the two-in-a-row Ulster champions Derry -interesting times ahead in Ulster surely
1973 ; 50 YEARS AGO.
This week fifty years ago we were reflecting on ‘the one that got away’ or even two that got away, in terms of East Cork Junior Hurling. In August Bride Rovers and Erins Own contested the 1973 East Cork Junior Hurling Final in Midleton. Still regarded as one of the best ever Divisional deciders it ended in a thrilling draw. We scored 7 11 to Erins Own’s 6 14. We were 12 points behind 6 10 to 37 in the second half. In an amazing finish Gus O Driscoll scored three goals and another by Pat Sheehan helped our stunning revival. In the September replay two early goals from Liam parle helped us lead by 2 3 to 0 1 after ten minutes. We were 2 9 to 1 6 up at half time and three further points from Seanie Barry (2) and Seam Murphy gave us a nine point advantage. Then Erins own took over and we were on the defensive. With two minutes left we were two points down. Seanie Barry was fouled as he headed for goal. Gussy stood over the free, twenty one yards out. His shot was described s ‘bullet-like’ but the Erins Own back stopped it -game over. Little did we think that evening in Midleton in 1972 that twenty four years would elapse before we’d get to another A Grade East Cork Final. The replay team was Joseph O Brien, Tony Walsh, Brendan O Driscoll, Tommy O Flynn, Matty Lehane, Paudie Murphy, Seamus Collins, Pat Sheehan, John Meade, Gussy O Driscoll, Seanie Barry, Facthna O Driscoll, Liam Parle, Seran Murphy, Johnny Barry, Pat Hoskins.
PYNES FIELD.
Since the contractors moved in just a few weeks back a huge amount of work has been completed. The first pitch was completed last week and seeded as well. Now we wait for the grass to grow! The whole project is massive and will take a few years to complete. We wont have much change out of €1 million when everything is done and dusted so the funding provided through our Club 100 Scheme is vital. New members are always welcome to join the Club 100- just contact any Club officer.
TIM HORGAN.
It was with great sadness over the weekend that I heard the news of the death of Tim Horgan a stalwart member of the Brian Dillons Club. Tim was a teacher, broadcaster, prolific writer but most of all a man who had a passionate lifelong love affair with hurling -especially Cork hurling. During his days in Farranferris and UCC Tim became a great friend of our own Fr Seanie Barry -a friendship that lasted down through the decades. Back in 1976 Tim wrote his first book on Cork hurling, followed by a complete cork hurling story later as well as books on Christy Ring. In 2011 I was present in the Brian Dillons Clubhouse when Tim launched the history of his own beloved Club. He never had a mobile phone and if he ever came across any Bride Rovers info in his research he’d always put it in the post. On Monday Fr Seanie was one of the priests who concelebrated Tim’s Fneral mass in St Joseph’s Church in Mayfield. After the Mass Tim was laid to rest in Rathcooney cemetery where I was honoured to Sing ‘The Banks Of My Own Lovely Lee’ at his graveside. Rest in peace Tim.
