Huge Hurling Weekend..

Well September is approaching fast and soon evening games will be just a memory. Last weekend was relatively quiet on the Championship front with little or no County Club Championship ties a the Colleges/Divisional Finals were sorted. Wis for Imokilly in hurling and Duhallow in football gave  these side a Quaret Final spot in the County Senior Championship. Our third hurling team were in round Robin Championship action, at home, but were beaten by a stronger Dungourney side.  The Junior C’s have their third game next Sunday. On Friday evening in The Holy Ground of Cobh the fate of our Junior A hurling team will be decided. Then on Saturday we return to Rivertown to take on Inniscarra in the Senior Hurling Championship. We host a big county Championship Fixture on Sunday

EAST CORK JUNIOR C HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP, ROUND 3.

On Sunday last our third XV played their second Round Robin game when we welcomed Dungournney to Pairc na Bride. We lost our first game to Midleton after a great contest whilst Dungourney beat Russell Rovers in their opener. It was a very strange game on Sunday. The visitors started like a train and looked like they’d win in a canter. In fairness our lads got well into the game. Some great points from frees by Aidan Hayes settled us. The second quarter was very close and the margin was down to two before Dungourney made it  9 points to 6 in their favour. Considering our slow start we were in a great position at the break. For the first five minutes after the short whistle we took over the match- everywhere except on the scoreboard. We were winning everything but four wides in a row just knocked the initiative from us. Dungourney simply took over. In fairness this was our third team against their second and they won by 2 17 to 0 8. We face Russell Rovers in Midleton on Sunday next at 11.30 in our Final Group game. Fair play to our young team on Sunday last they kept trying to the end. It was very tough on Cormac O Sullivan who got injured in the  pre-match warm up. Team v Dungourney; Ronan o Riordan Darragh Kielty Brian Collins Colin Hogan Oisin Roche John O Sullivan Jack Kearney Eldon O Connor Nicky Kelleher Adam Hayes Frank O Flynn Ryan O Callaghan Alan Barry Ciaran O Dowd Craig O Callaghan Kamso Obi Danny Kelleher Cormac O Sullivan. The game was well refereed by Tadhg O Connor from the Killeagh Club.

SENIORS IN ACTION.

On Saturday next September 2nd we play our third Group game in the Round Robin series. With victories over Na Piarsaigh and Killeagh already secured we are in a good place but nothing is certain. We face Inniscarra in Riverstown on Saturday evening at 6.45. The Md Cork side won the premier Intermediate last and having lost their first two games wont be anxious to be involved in a  Relegation battle in their first year  up Senior. We have be beset by injuries and sickness for the Na Piarsaigh and Killeagh games. Hopefully by the weekend we’ll have a strong panel to pick from.  We could make a quarter final or even a semi final but Inniscarra will be tough opposition. Go for it lads.

JUNIOR A HURLING.

Our fate is kind of out o our own hands in the JAHC. We beat Sarsfields by 2 points but lost to St Itas by 4. These two sides meet in Cobh on Friday evening at 6.45 and the result here and in the other two Groups will determine if we get a quarter final spot or not.

While we say ‘Well Done’ to all who got their Leaving Cert results last Friday we join with the whole country in extending our deepest sympathy to the three families in Tipperary on the loss of four wonderful young people in that awful car accident on Friday night.

UNDER 15’s WIN.

The U15 boys continued their good run of form with a victory after a hard fought game against the Kilworth Araglen  combination Kilara in Araglen on Monday night.   Kilara let our boys know early on that they were in a tough game and it required a resilient display to see off the challenge posed.  Goalie Calum Somers was solid throughout with strong puck outs and was alert throughout in patrolling his goal-line.  The fullback line of Darragh O’Farrell, Jamie Walsh and Eoghan Buckley were determined throughout.  The half back line were strong performers with wing backs Éanna Lyons and James Finn in top form either side of a controlled Cathal Barry. Midfield saw Shane O’Dowd and Denis Fitzgerald providing cover both sides of the pitch with good forays by Shane in the second half.  The half forward line of Matthew Kenny, Jack Lynch and Micheal Walsh put in a good shift with full forwards Finn O’Driscoll, Garry Quirke and James Larkin providing the fulcrum in attack.  At half time the Rovers boys had led by 0-8 to 0-4 following an intense 30 minutes.  The second half was no different with Kilara never letting up but thankfully the boys responded in kind.  Sebastian Byrd and Adam Kelleher were introduced at half time and immediately had an impact along with other substitutes Mark Hynes and Con McCormack.  The boys eventually closed the game out on a 0-16 to 1-7 score line.  Bride Rovers Panel: Calum Somers, Eoghan Buckley, Jamie Walsh, Darragh O’Farrell, Éanna Lyons, Cathal Barry, James Finn, Denis Fitzgerald, Shane O’Dowd, Matthew Kenny, Jack Lynch, Micheal Walsh, Finn O’Driscoll, Garry Quirke, James Larkin, Adam Kelleher, Sebastian Byrd, Mark Hynes, Con McCormack, Donagh Hurley & Robert Sweeney.

OSKARS RELIVED.

There was a Q out the door last Wednesday night to purchase the USB stick of the Oskars Movies. What was a dream or a vague idea last February turned into a brilliant few months of fun, filming and fundraising.

UNDER 14 NEWS.

Despite the U14 season being over we have continued with training at least once a week and are now heading into a few weeks of tournaments. Some of our lads are playing under15 championship which has been going well but the lack of structured games for others has been a disappointment. Clubs are trying to compensate by organising their own challenge games etc.

Last weekend was a big one for 4 of our lads who headed to Waterford to participate in the Tony Forristal competition. Congrats to Cathal, Finn, Michael and Mark who did their club proud. Also to Richie Cahill who was a coach in one of the East squads.

Our U14 hurlers went to Midleton  minus the 4 lads for a tournament v Midleton, Killeagh and Carrigtoohill. All games were tight with us finishing off the day with a win v Carrig.

Next weekend we'll head back for another tournament with Midleton, Charleville, Youghal and  Blackrock.

 UNDER 6’s IN KILWORTH.

They say ‘Mol an Oige agus tiocfaidh siad (praise the youth and they will flourish) -well for anyone lucky enough to have been in Kilworth last Saturday it was just a brilliant experience. To see the under 6 lads with hurleys in hands representing the home club and Bride Rovers. As it should be winning or losing means nothing to these young players -they’re just having fun. Their skill level is improving all the time, well done young plyers and their great coaches and mentors.

DERRY MASTERS.

Paddy Bradley of Glenullin was the star player for the Derry team as they beat Cork in the Masters (over 40) semi-final in Swinford last Saturday. Bradley scored 7 points in the oak leaf County’s 0 16 to 0 5 win over Cork. Well done to our own terry Broderick and his Rebel team mates for reaching the semi final

GREAT GAME IN the PITCH.

Seldom a team would score 4 15 in a hurling game -and lose! Well that’s what befell the B grade hurlers of Lisgoold in Pairc na Bride on Monday night last. In a Round 2 game Watergrasshill came out on top in a thriller by 2 23 to 5 15. Lisgoold will be back in action in Rathcormac next Sunday evening at 6.45 when they meet Castlelyons..

KILDINAN SPORTS 1938.

In June 1938 the newly formed Kildinan Athletic Club held their first ever Novice Sports meeting under N.A. and C.A.I. Rules. Newspaper reports described the day as ‘Under rather unfavourable weather conditions’ and the same writer commented ‘Despite the adverse atmospheric conditions there was a very large attendance of spectators who witnessed some exciting finishes in both track and field events’ The duties of Secretary and Starter were capably discharged by Mr. Jerome Fitzgerald, Bridestown.  He also competed and won the Confined 1000 yards race. In the relay race Carrignavar Football Club were the winners and Bride Rovers Hurling Club were second. Memories of the glory days of the Kldinan Athletic Club are being revived at present. A fitting structure to remember those athletes and Club Officials will be unveiled at The Pound on next Sunday week September the 10th

COUNTY MATCH IN PITCH.

Nest Sunday will be hectic once again. At half 11 the Junior C team are in Midleton to play Russell Rovers. At 2 o clock we host Kilworth and Ballinhassig in a PIHC game and we host the Junior B game tween Lisgoold and Castlelyons at 6.45. A large crowd is expected for the afternoon game so we need plenty help. All Club members available are asked to be at the pitch at 12.45

CONGRATS.

Congrats to our Club Chairman Pa O Driscoll and Max

UNDER 13’s IN FOOTBALL ACTION.

Our under13s were at home to near neighbours Lisgoold in the football league on Friday evening.  With a strong breeze blowing we were against it for the first half. Scores were hard to come by with both defences doing well. Half-time saw us behind on a scoreline of Bride Rovers 1-1 Lisgoold 2-0.

With the wind in our favour in the second half the lads upped the work rate and put together some lovely scores and with the backs doing excellent we limited Lisgoold to only 1 point while adding 1-8 to our score. Final score Bride Rovers 2-9 Lisgoold 2-1.

The under 13’s have no game this week. Training continues on Wednesday and Saturday.

 FINAL SCRAPS..

Our last Scrap Collection for the summer will took place last Friday.  Again it was a great success. Thanks to all who helped collect and bring the scrap together since last April. While huge quantities came from Bartlemy, Kildinan an Rathcormac we also got ‘donations’ from around 14 parishes all over East and North Cork and West Waterford. Mile buiochas do gach duine. Our next collection will probably be in the Spring but in the meantime keep looking for and collecting bits and pieces. Material can be collected in the future, if needed, by contacting 087 9538077
