Victory over Killeagh after half a century..
On what was another absolutely brilliant hurling weekend we had Championship outings for the Senior and Junior Hurlers. Fifty years have gone since we last beat Killeagh in Championship and this gap was bridged on Saturday night. On Sundy our Junior team played St Itas, we were defeated by 4 points after a fine performance. In between those games we hosted another big County Board game on Sunday afternoon. This weekend we leave down the hurleys and it’s back to football action.

FIRST WIN OVER KILLEAGH SINCE 1973.
At Clonmult Memorial Park, Midleton on Saturday evening we met Killeagh in Round 2 of the SAHC Round Robin series. Both ourselves and Killeagh had won their opening games, against Na Piarsaigh and Inniscarra respectively so this game was free of the ‘last chance saloon’ tension. Nevertheless from our point of view our championship record against the Glenbower men isn’t great. We’ve only met once at Senior level, back in 2009, when we lost by 3 15 to 0 16. We never met at Intermediate championship level. In Junior in East Cork they defeated us heavily in 1990 in Ballynoe -we lost that day by 4 14 to 0 4. There was a huge shadow over preparations for last week’s game with many of the team and panel very sick. A virulent flu-like epidemic struck early in the week which curtailed training severely. It was truly like ‘ the old days’ in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s with a massive crowd in Midleton for the game. Killeagh played with a tricky cross wind. Adam Walsh started for us having missed the Na Piarsaigh game due to a leg injury. He rose our first white flag after a few minutes. Killeagh equalised from a free before two white flags from play per Adam (free) and William Finnegan put us 0 3 to 0 1 ahead. We looked to have the upper hand but in fairness Dylan McCarthy kept Killeagh in touch -he scored 10 points from 11 frees. Brian Roche raised a white flag after a peach of a pass from Cillian Tobin and Cillian himself added another point. Our defence was well on top but our shooting was off target. Against Na Piarsaigh we hit just a handful of wides -Saturday night we struck 15. Leading by two points, 0 10 to 0 8,at halftime with the breeze to help us it seemed a nice lead yet we could easily have been five or six points ahead. The first half was kind of stop-start but the second half was a livelier affair. Within seconds of the resumption our lead was halved to a single point. A nice score from Daniel Dooley restored our two-point lead. Three wides in a row was indicative of our superiority on the field but not on the scoreboard. Then came a bad blow when Leahy got through for a Killeagh goal and after 43 minutes they led for the first time. We needed a response and it came quickly. Conleith Ryan stole the sliotar and took off on a solo run and raided the green flag. It was an important score and we were up by two points again. The last quarter was all about us going two or three ahead and Kileagh pegging us back again. Cian Hogan made a great save which lifted the team. Points from Adam, Shane O Connor, Brian and sub Louie Roche put us four ahead deep into injury time. Kileagh brought it back to three and then two and the ref played on. A two point lead in hurling is precarious but urged on by team captain Eoin Roche we held on to in by 1 17 to 1 15. Our wide tally was worrying but a win is a win and we can look forward to Round 3 against Inniscarra in early September, a game that will be played in Riverstown. Overall with many of the players suffering from the flu this was a commendable result -well done lads and well done to Liam, Pat and all the backroom team. Team & scorers C. Hogan, TO Sullivan, D. Cashman, C. Hazlewood, K.Kearney, E. Roche, SO Connor, B.Roche, 0 2, J.Mannix, C.Ryan 1 0, R. O Connell, A. Walsh 0 10 8 frees, 1 65, D. Dooley 1 1, C. Tobin 0 1, W. Finnegan 0 7, D. Dooley 0 1, J. Ahern, P O Flynn, L.Roche 0 1, C. O Connor. From that Senior Championship loss to Killeagh 14 years ago we had just one survivor, Daniel Dooley, he came on as a sub in 2009 and scored 2 points
EAST CORK JUNIOR A HURLING.
We travelled to Cloyne to play St. Itas in our 2nd Junior A Hurling group game on Sunday evening. Having beaten Sars the previous Monday it was a quick turnaround for the team. In the Sars game we lost Mike Liddane and Michael Collins to injury and lost Louie and Cian to the Senior team on Saturday night. Both teams started the game well and the sides went score for score for the first 10 minutes which saw the sides level 3 points each with our scores coming from Conor (2) and 1 for Davey. We hit a purple patch then and scored the next 3 points from the accurate shooting of Conor from play and placed balls.
St. Itas responded with 2 points in a minute before Davey restored our 2 point lead with another great effort. Itas scored the next 2 points to level the score after 25 minutes 7 each. Both sides exchanged scores before the break with Conor getting both our scores to leave the sides level 9 points apiece at half time. Conor got our opening point of the second half straight from the restart but 3 points for Itas give them a 2 point lead for the first time in the match.
Credit to the lads who never gave up and a point from Davey in the tenth minute and one from DJ in the 19th meant the sides were level again with 10 minutes remaining. The Gortroe side hit a purple patch and got the next 4 points to take the biggest lead of the game. The gap could have been wider only from a wonderful save from Shuan from a rocket of a shot from Cork player Seamie Harnedy. Conor reduced the gap back to 3 with another free in the 1st minute of injury time. Itas completed the scoring with a point deep into injury time to run out winners on a score line of 0-17 to 0-13. Great credit to the players who gave another marvellous after what was a very busy week for them.
With 3 teams in the group, we wont know our faith until after St. Itas and Sars play on the 1st of September and the group may be decided by score difference if Sars win that game. S Knox, L Collins, J Pratt, J Connor, A Buckley, L Forde, A Hynes, F Collins, C Barry (0-9, (0-6 fs)), DJ Cahill (0-1), D Barry (0-3), D Buckley, S Ahern, J Mannix, E Cashman, Subs, K Cotter, S Walsh.
PIHC IN PITCH.
Two o clock on Sunday saw Pa O Driscoll throw in the sliotar for the Round 2 PIHC tie between Dungourney and Castlelyons before a fine crowd of spectators. Billed as a local derby game it proved to be the very opposite with Castlelyons winning very easily. Thanks again to all who helped out on the day and to our Catering Committee who served refreshments. On Sunday September3rd we host Kilworth and Ballinhassig in the PIHC and the following Sunday we have Ballinora v Mitchelstown in IF football.

FOOTBALL ALL THE WAY.
It’s a Football week end as we have Championship games at Junior A and Junior C level. Our Junior C Game v Lisgoold was fixed for next Saturday evening August 19th but may be switched to tonight Thursday the 17th. On Sunday night August 20th at 6pm in Ballynoe we face Carrignavar in the quarter final of the A Grade Football championship. We beat Castlemartyr and Youghal and Lost to Midleton in our Group games to qualify for the last 8. Carrig are always tough opponents so good luck lads and give it everything.
GAMES v KILLEAGH. Over the years we’ve played Killeagh in various grades. Our most recent meeting was in May 209 when they beat us by 3 15 to 0 16 over in Ballynoe in the Co. SHC. Our team that night was D. Fitzgerald, A Collins, B.Walsh, T Moloney, B Murphy, B Murphy, J Murphy, P Murphy , B Johnson 0 4, S Ryan, 0 2, J O Driscoll, 0 4, M Kearney, M Collins 0 1, D Ryan, C O Keeffe. Subs T. Broderick 0 2, D. Dooley 0 2, D. Boyce, N.Fitzgerald. Ater that loss we beat Castlelyons 3 10 to 0 3, Blackrock 1 11 to 0 13 before losing out to CIT by 3 10 to 2 7.
In 1928 Killeagh defeated Rathcormac by 50 to 2 4 in the first round of the East Cork JHC, the game was played in Lisgoold. The Rathcormac team was Mick Geary (Goal), Jack Leahy (Capt), Edmond Finn, John Bannon, Jim Murphy, Billy Hanan, Mick Dorgan, Jerh O Gorman, M.Dorgan, E. Cronin, Tom Barry, Tom Collins, Ned Daly, Tommy Condon and Patrick Canavan.
1973 was the last time our ‘first’ team beat Killeagh’s ‘first’ team in Championship hurling. We had beaten Dungourney(who defeated us in the ’72 Final) in a first round replay before meeting Killeagh -East Cork winners 1970 & 71, in the second round in Midleton at 7.300pm on Sunday July 22nd. We led by 2 10 to 0 2 at halftime thanks to scores from Gus and Fachtna O Driscoll, Johnny and Seanie Barry and Pat Sheehan and went on to win by 3 16 to 1 5.
UNDER 13 FOOTBALL.
Our under 13s were at home to Killeagh on Friday evening in Football. With a few injuries and lads away on holidays we were down to fifteen of our normal panel. A big ‘thank you’ to Ollie and Conor for stepping up as cover on the bench on the night . After a very competitive hours football with very little between the two teams we won on a scoreline of Bride Rovers 4-5 to Killeagh’s 1-8. The under 13’s have no game this week, so we will get some training done
NAAS CALLING.
The under 11s welcomed Naas to Páirc na Bríde last Saturday for a feast of football. The Kildare outfit were on their annual tour where they played in Waterford in the morning, Cork in the afternoon and stopped off in Hayes Hotel in Thurles on the way home for a bite to eat and a ‘History of the GAA’ tour. After some good days recently in football, our feet were firmly brought back down to Earth, as Naas gave a strong display of off-the-shoulder running and kicking from distance. Still, in true Rovers fashion, our lads never threw in the towel and got some good scores themselves and worked very hard. Our thanks to some of our U10 and U12 panel who helped out on the day.
We travel to Semple Stadium this Thursday for the small ball. At the time of writing, we are still awaiting a time and fixtures but any opportunity to play on the hollowed grass in Thurles is a great day. We play three matches, followed by a tour of the stadium from an inter county player afterwards.
SUNFLOWER DAY.
Next Sunday at Corrin Nature Reserve between Rathcormac and Fermoy a very special and colourful event is planned. It’a ‘Sunflower Day’ with the funds raised being divided between the Nature Reserve itself and Marymount Hospice. The Corrin centre is a fantastic oasis of wildlife, flowers, walks, ponds and truly a gorgeous spot for young and old. There is no charge on Sunday between 10 and 4 but donations would be appreciated. Any Club member who can help out on the day please contact Billy Finnegan.
