Under 11s play in Killarney..
Our under11s travelled to the Kingdom last Thursday to take part in a football blitz at the home of Kerry GAA, Fitzgerald Stadium. Bride Rovers mentor and Kerry native, Chris Hoare, led the troops into three battles against Kerry teams. In the first game against Kerins O'Rahillys, the lads got off to a flying start and had a goal and a point on the board inside two minutes. Before the ten minute mark, we had multiple glorious chances to add extra scores but our kicking was wasteful in front of goal. This would come back to haunt us as the home side got two goals in the last minute to win out narrowly. In our second game we played Beale GAA club and were under pressure from the throw in. A mighty defensive performance kept scores to a minimum and towards the end of the game, we managed to get up the field and get a goal a few points to level the game before it was all over. This was a great result mainly due to our great defending. In game three, we played divisional team St.Kieran’s from East Kerry. Our lads put in a mighty performance to win the game comfortably, with some great link play and attacking football on view from the Rovers. A win, a loss and a draw is not a bad way to come out of the Kingdom after playing three Kerry teams. The day was capped off by a stadium tour from Joe O'Connor, Kerry senior footballer and captain in 2022. Joe showed the lads the warm-up and dressing rooms areas as well as a rundown of what training and match days entail. A very enjoyable day out and a great thing for the boys to be able to say they played at Fitzgerald Stadium. We visit the hallowed turf of Semple Stadium on August 17th for a hurling blitz. Hurling training continues on Mondays and Saturdays with football on Wednesday nights. Thanks to all who made this special day a reality. Fitzgerald Stadium was opened in 1936. It’s named after Dick Fitzgerald (1882-1930) one of the greats of Kerry Football. He captained Kerry to win the All Ireland Titles in 1913 and 1914. He wrote the book ‘How To Play Gaelic Football’. The Kerins O Rahilly Club is based in Tralee. They won the Munster Club Senior Football Championship last year. The Club is named after two Tralee men The O Rahilly 1875- 1916 and Charlie Kerins 1918-1944. The Beale Club is based in Ballybunion. Eoin ‘Bomber’ Liston and Denis ‘Ogie’ Moran are two club legends, the Bomber won 7 All Ireland and Ogie won 8 with the great Kerry teams managed by Micko Dwyer.
LIKE OLD TIMES AT ARAGLEN CARNIVAL.
We played a very enjoyable challenge match against Araglen on Sunday evening as part of the Araglen Carinval. This is one of the very few parish community Carnivals still in existence today. This year marks the 66th carnival in Araglen, well done to all involved. The game was very even for the first twenty minutes with both sides going score for score and saw Araglen leading 7 points to 6 with our scores coming from Michael, Adam Hayes (x2), Frank, Nicky and Seamus. Araglen struck for the opening goal of the game in the 22nd second minute but a great response saw us go down the other end of the field and Seamus finished a great move to the back of the net. A point from Fergus saw the sides level coming up to the break but one last attack from Araglin resulted in a penalty being awarded which was well put away to see the hosts leading 2-7 to 1-7 at the break. Araglen got the opening point of the second half but three points in a row from John and the two Adams saw the margin back to one. Araglen had the better of the next 10 minutes and extended their lead out to 7 points on a score of 3-12 to 1-11. We had another good spell and points from Jordan (2), Adam Hayes(3) and Frank had the margin back to 3 points with 5 minutes left to play 1-17 to 3-14. Our lads tried hard but couldn't get the goal needed to level the game and two further points and a 4th goal at the death saw Araglen win out on a score of 4-16 to 1-17.
Thanks to Araglen for hosting the game and providing refreshments after the match for the team. Result: Bride Rovers 1-17 Araglen 4-16

WEDDING BELLS.
It’s the time of the year when the wedding bells are truly ringing out. The word coming back from the faraway Phillipines last weekend was of a fantastic occasion with a difference. That was the wedding celebration of our own Shane O Connor and his bride Malu Laurito in Cebu. There was a great Bride Rovers representation present and by all accounts it was a beautiful and memorable occasion. Last weekend of course wasn’t the first Bride Rovers presence in the Philippines of course as Fr Gussie and Fr Fachtna O Driscoll ministered there for many years. We wish Shane and Malu all the best for a great married life together.
This weekend ‘matrimonial matters’ are a bit closer to home. On Saturday we have the marriage of Daniel Lane and Sharon Beirne in Castlelyons. Again the Bride Rovers Club and entire community extend all the very best wishes to the happy couple. Daniel has been a Club stalwart for many years as a player Club Officer, East Cork Board Secretary and recently as Cork GAA administrator. We extend all our best wishes to Daniel and Sharon and their families on this great occasion.
DUBLIN v KERRY AGAIN.
Sometimes the more things change the more they stay the same. So it is next Sunday when old rivals Kerry and Dublin take to the field in the 2023 All Ireland Football Final. Memories of great games between these tow counties will come flooding back. The Heffos Army v Mickos Kerry games in the 70’s and 80’s will forever linger in the memory. I was lucky to have bennat many of those classics and I think next Sunday one name will come to mind, Brian Mullins. The late Brian was a giant and a great footballer. He used hands, elbows, knees and every part of his body with that great Dublin team. Hopefully he'll be properly remembered next Sunday in the pitch he loved so well.
UNDER 13 HURLING Nemo.
Our under13s were at home to Nemo Rangers on Friday evening in the hurling league. Holidays meant we only had 15 regular players so thanks again to Ciaran, Cathal and Henry for stepping up from the u12s to help us . We got off to a fast start with some great early goals. We got well ahead and we're up 5-3 to 0-3 at half-time. We rotated the lads into different positions for the second half but still added 2-8 to our score and ran out winners 7-11 to 2-5. Onto football on this coming Friday evening when we are away to St Vincent’s at 7.
CUL CAMP NEXT WEEK.
The excitement is mounting as the countdown until the 2023 Bride Rovers Cul Camp gets underway. With 200 participants lined up it should be a fantastic week. Behind the scene planning and arranging is ongoing with so many volunteers offering to help out from Monday July 31st until Friday August 4th. The Cul Camp is now a huge feature of every GAA Club’s year. It’s an opportunity for youngsters to have a fun-filled week enjoying Gaelic Games in a non-competitive manner and we are all really anticipating a super week.

LIMERICK MAKE HISTORY.
Back in 2015 Limerick were whipped 4 23 to 1 16 by Tipperary in the Munster Championship- the biggest defeat at the hands of Tipperary in 53 years. TJ Ryan’s side were truly humiliated and the future of Limerick hurling looked very bleak indeed. Since then 8 All Ireland Hurling Titles have been contested and Limerick have won 5 of them! It’s an amazing statistic and truly a Golden Era has arrived for Limerick. John Kiely has been dubbed, a genius, a messiah, a mastermind but whatever qualities the Galbally man possesses he has led an amazing bunch of hurlers to unbelievable heights. Since I first attended the Hurling Final in 1972 I’ve only missed a handful and last Sunday’s display was truly stunning. There have been better Finals and more emotional occasions -like the wins of Offaly, Galway, Wexford and Clare and naturally Cork’s victories, but the second half of last Sunday’s game was something else. In terms of power hurling and absolute dominance it was just amazing. Credit to John Kiely & Co for putting together and maintaining such a wonderful bunch of hurlers. Credit too the McManus family for backing them. They will be around for a few years more. In the Round Robin system they could lose a game or even two next year in Munster and still win the All Ireland. Truly we are in amazing hurling times. It was great to see the two Limerick players with connections in our parish, Conor Boylan and Barry Murphy, make cameo appearances in last Sunday’s decider. I must say that the whole atmosphere, spectacle and sense of occasion that was ‘All Ireland Sunday’ has been greatly diminished without the Minor Final -and the Tickets were still €90, enough said.
