Planes,Trains, Buses and Automobiles..

It’s All Ireland Hurling Final weekend or should I say just All Ireland Sunday – we often went to Dublin on the Saturday morning for the 7’s in September but that Feast of Hurling on the day before the Final is no more.  This week and next will see a lot of travelling involving Club Members and supporters -right across the world. We’ve only 4 tickets for next Sundays game but I’m sure the Kilkenny and Limerick natives domiciled amongst us will poke out a few more  by Shannon-side and on the Banks of the Suir that Flows Down by Mooncoin and be on the roads to Dublin early on Sunday morning.  Last Friday Katie Quirke and her Cork Lady Footballer team mates travelled to Drogheda for an oversight stay. On Saturday they journeyed on to the Athletic Grounds in Armagh for their Quarter Final game. Katie came on in the second half and kicked two great points as well as doing some heroic defending. They’ll be on the Motorway to Thurles on Saturday week for a semi with old foes and friends, Dublin. This week from Bartlemy and Rathcormac the planes have gone to the Philippines for the wedding of Shane ‘Muscles’ O Connor and Malu Laurito. The wedding is on in Cebu Cathedral on Saturday. Cebu is a city of itself, a good distance from Manila. Malu is from Lapu-Lapu city, which is over the bridge from Cebu, on the island of Mactan. Lapu-Lapu is named after a Filipino chieftain who is famous for killing Ferdinand Magellan, who led the first circumnavigation of the globe, back in 1521. We all learned about Magellan's voyage in Second Year history. Cebu is where Christianity was first established in the Philippines.  All our very best wishes to Malu and Shane. From Down Under in Australia another Bride Rovers contingent will also be heading to Cebu for the festivities. Meanwhile we expect Brian and Eoin Roche to be flying home from Boston after their hurling campaign there. This weekend also James Bermingham, in his referees role, is on route to the Golden Gate City of San Francisco to officiate at a weekend of Gaelic Games. Each year the four Irish Provincial Councils nominate a referee from their province to make the trip Staes-side and for 2023 James has been selected by the Munster Council. Bon voyage, safe journey and safe travelling agus go n-eiri na boithreacha go leir libh. to all our members, players and friends travelling all over the world.

FOOTBALLERS INTO QUARTER FINAL.

Having won a game and lost a game we travelled to Ballynoe on Sunday evening to take on Yougfhal in a Round Three game in the JAFC The game was very tight for the first ten minutes. With some great passages of play and strong linking between the backs, through midfield and into the forwards we got some fine points from Denis, Adam, Conor and Conor Hazelwood. Youghal found it difficult to penetrate our defence due to some really hard work from the backs, however they did break out defence and manufactured a penalty and dually converted it. Our lads didn’t panic and worked a great goal with a pass across the square from Denis with Adam punching it into the net. Half time score 2:5 to 1:6.

Youghal started the stronger in the second half and clocked a few points but we also kept the score board ticking over. The backs were solid in defence lead by Fordy, Conor and Kieran, while our half backline were linking well with midfield and the half forward line. A great goal by William Finnigan who saw the keeper off his line (however the jury is out on that one!!) put us six points ahead. However Youghal hit a purple patch and brought the score back to two points. We withstood huge pressure and won 3:10 to 1:13.  Great win lads, well done. Into the quarter final we go with the opposition being Carrignavar Team: Ronan O Riordan, Kieran Cotter, Liam Forde, Kieran Kearney, Conor Hazelwood 0:1, Tadgh Lawton, Ronan O Connell, Damien Buckley, Josh Ahern, Denis Cashman 1:1, Conor Barry 0:3, DJ Cahill, Louis Roche 0:1, Adam Walsh 1:4, Ed Cashman 0:1.

Subs: William Finnegan 1:0, Adam Hynes, Cillian Barry, Frank O Flynn.

CARRIG TOO STRONG IN JUNIOR C.

Fielding a second adult football team for the first time in years we played Carrigtwohill in Carrig on Saturday evening in the Junior C Round Robin Series. It was mighty to put out a second XV featuring several players from previous Junior A winning teams and some younger players. Well done lads. On the night the home side proved far too strong for us. WE play Midleton in Rathcormac on next Saturday evening in the same competition.  TEAM; Ben Hogan, Colin Hogan, Jordan Mannix, Adrian Buckley, Paul Larkin, Shane Walsh, John, O'Sullivan, Jason Mannix, Tadgh O'Sullivan , Ryan O'Callaghan, Cillian Barry, Shaun Knox, Frank O'Flynn , Jerome O'Driscoll , James 'Jammie' Barry (Captain), Mark O'Connell, Mike Carey

JUNIOR HURLERS IN ACTION.

Our Junior C hurlers have a challenge match vs St Catherine's on tonight Thursday in Pynes at 7.30.

All IRELAND FINAL.

Limerick and Kilkenny square up for the McCarthy Cup in Croke Park on Sunday. In a repeat of last year’s decider Limerick will be attempting to make their own history by winning the Title for the fourth consecutive year. Only two counties, Cork in the 1940’s and Kilkenny from 2006 to 2009, have won the 4 in a row. Few will back against Limerick. They are an amazing team, superb athletes and brilliant hurlers. Even without Sean Finn and Declan Hannon -two of the best hurlers of the last decade, Limerick have just kept going. They stuttered a bit in Munster but John Kiely has timed and primed this team to perfection. They knew that with the Round Robin in system they could lose a game, maybe even two in Munster and still qualify. They have developed their own brand of power hurling, they play a definite plan and Kiley, Kinnerk and Currid are truly the ‘Three Wise Parsons’ of modern-day hurling.  Kilkenny have a tradition that no one can truly match and going not this Final as under dogs will suit them fine. It should be a great game. I still think it should be played in September with a Minor Final before it but that my personal opinion. I’m all in favour of progress but throwing out tradition just for the sake of it seems to be the way the GAA is going nowadays. Hope springs eternal here in Cork but that September Sunday back in 2005 when we beat Galway 1 21 to 1 16 seems so long ago now. Seventeen years have come and gone since -imagine there’s no one under 20 in Cork County and City that has seem a Cork Captain raise the McCarthy Cup in Croke Park!

UNDER 15’s WIN WELL.

The Under15s continued their winning form away to Fermoy in hurling championship last Monday night.  The boys dominated the game from start to finish due to 100% commitment from all the players.  Against a slight breeze Rovers went in at the break leading by 4-11 to 0-01.  The second half continued in the same vein with a tireless effort from the boys who won in the end by 7-24 to 1-02.  Bride Rovers Panel: Calum Somers, Eoghan Buckley, Jamie Walsh, Mark Hynes, Éanna Lyons, Cathal Barry, Darragh O’Farrell, Denis Fitzgerald, Shane O’Dowd, Matthew Kenny, Jack Lynch, Micheal Walsh, James Larkin, Sebastian Byrd, Adam Kelleher, Finn O’Driscoll and  Donagh Hurley.

SYMPATHY.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Will Cashin of Coolnakilla, Rathcormac on the death of his sister Mary. Born in 1941 and educated in Rathcormac NS Mary trained in Dublin to be a cook. On Qualification she took up employment in Bantry where she met the future love of her life, Bob Murnane. They married and settled in Bantry where they reared their family of 6 children. The Murnanes were and still remain very involved in the construction industry. Mary’s Requiem Mass was at noon in Bantry on Monday last. Her burial took place in the Abbey cemetery where she was laid to rest with her late husband Bob. Mary never forgot her links with the Banks of the Bride and was a frequent visitor to Coolnakilla. Our deepest sympathy to Will Cashin, a stalwart of our community, and the extended Murnane family.
