Seniors win Tony Walsh Cup..

On Friday evening last our senior hurlers played Tallow in the Tony Walsh Memorial Tournament at Pairc Na Bride.

Referee Niall O Neill got proceedings underway at 7.45 in windy conditions and Cian O Connor was first off the mark with a well taken point. Tallow struck back with three unanswered points to surge in front. By the tenth minute the Rovers had reduced the deficit to one with points from Adam Walsh and Louie Roche. By the 20th minute The Rovers led 0-8 to 0-7 with some well taken points from Kieran Kearney, Conor Barry, Ed Cashman, Conleith Ryan and Adam Walsh. Cian Hogan in goals was distributing the ball well which led to some good attacking play. In the final ten minutes of the half we outscored Tallow 1-04 to 1-02 to lead at the half time by 1-12 to 1-09. During that time Conor Barry got the Rovers goal while Louie, Conleith & Adam (2) got the points

The first 10 minutes of the second half were very even with both sides scoring 3 points each, Ed Cashman and Adam Walsh (2) were  the Rovers scores. The Rovers then hit a purple patch in the next 10 minutes scoring an impressive 1-06 to take a commanding lead. William Finnegan got the Rovers second goal while also scoring 3 points from frees, Adam Walsh and Conleith Ryan grabbed the other scores. In the final minutes of the game Tallow scored their second goal but further points from Willian Finnegan, Conleith Ryan from a superb sideline cut and Adam Walsh ensured a 2-24 to 2-15 win for the Rovers. 2023 ALL IRELAND HURLING FINAL.

At different times on Saturday evening and again on Sunday afternoon a Galway v Clare All Ireland Senior Hurling Final pairing looked possible. It was not to be though as four in a row seeking limerick will once again face Kilkenny in the decider on Sunday July 23rd- July Final-sounds really awful! Semi Finals are there to be won and John Kiely and Derek Lyng will be contented with their displays but with plenty to work on for the next two weeks.  Once more ‘twill be a strange day with no Minor Final, no curtain raiser -just the one game. Incidentally the Club will get just two Ticket for the Final. My first Final was 1972 when Kilkenny beat Cork. I missed the 73 final when Limerick bridged a 33 year gap to win. Kilkenny always claimed injuries to key players was a factor in that loss. The Cats got their revenge the following year. I remember that Final well, Eddie Keher was on fire scoring 1 11 as Kilkenny won 3 19 to 1 13. A crowd of 62,000 attended the game but an awful lot of them were well gone before the final whistle of a one-sided final. Nicky Orr was the Kilkenny Captain. That same year John Connolly played with his Galaxy team when they beat London in the quarter final -his brother Michael was on the London team! Six years later in 1980 Michael and John were both on the Galway team captained by their Irish speaking brother Joe than won an emotional All Ireland Final. I was on Hill 16 that day and will never forget the late Joe McDonagh singing his version of ‘The Wests’ Awake’- ah yes, great memories of great September Sundays.

JUNIORS v SHANBALLYMOREJunior Hurling Challenge Match vs Shanballymore, Date 8th of July, Venue: Rathcormac, time 4pm

Score: Bride Rovers 1-11  Shanballymore 14 points

We played Shanballymore on Saturday afternoon in a Junior Hurling Challenge match, while it was a bright clear day a strong wind going across the pitch meant scores were difficult to come by for both sides. We started well with points from Nicky and Adam but Shanballymore took over and scored the next 5 points in a row. It was nearly the 25 minute before we got our 3rd point but another point from DJ reduced the margin back to 1. Shanballymore got the last point of the half to lead at half time 6 pts to 4.

Shanbally started the 2nd half better and got the opening 3 scores of the half. DJ and Conor responded with points before 3 more points for the North Cork side followed by another from Conor saw the visitors leading by 12pts to 7 with 10 minutes remaining.  Shanbally extended the gap to 6 points before we hit a purple patch and 3 points in as many minutes from Louie (2) and Adam made sure we would have a tight finish. Another point for Shanbally was cancelled out by a long range free from Shuan. With time up we had the chance to drop one last free into a crowded square and Louie managed to flick the ball to the back of the net to leave the contest end in a draw

Team & Subs; S Knox, K Cotter, A Buckely, J Kearney, O Roche, L Forde, J O'Sullivan, A Hynes, S Ahern, DJ Cahill, F O'Flynn, D Buckley, N Kelleher, A Hayes, J Powell, C Barry, L Roche, C O'Dowd.ts just 4 weeks to the 1st round of championship were we play Sars in Watergrasshill on Monday the 7th of August so training is really stepping up a few gears.

After an even enough first 15 mins our lads got on top and ran out winners on a scoreline of Bride Rovers 4-8 Bishopstown 1-5. Thanks to Ciaran, Padraig, Ollie, Henry and Jakub for stepping up to help. Speedy recovery to Jakub who got an injury.

UNDER 15 FOOTBALLERS WIN.

Our under15 boys got their football championship off to a great start with a win away to St Colmcilles in Whitescross last Monday night.  The Saints are a combination of Carrignavar and Whites Cross. The boys started the game strongly and built up a good lead at half time against a strong breeze, going in at the break 3-4 to 0-3 ahead.  A heavy rain shower at half time along with the breeze dying at half time meant the conditions were completely different in the second half.  St Colmcilles raised their game five minutes into the half and a goal had them chomping at the bit.  Following ten minutes of sustained Colmcilles’ pressure the Rovers’ boys settled their supporters’ nerves with nice points from Shane O’Dowd and Matthew Kenny which extended the margin further.  At the end the Rovers boys were deserving winners by 4-8 to 1-5.  Team: Adam Kelleher, James Larkin, Jack Lynch, Mark Hynes, Darragh O’Farrell, Cathal Barry, Jamie Walsh, Denis Fitzgerald, Éanna Lyons, Micheal Walsh, Shane O’Dowd, Matthew Kenny, Finn O’Driscoll, Sebastian Byrd, Eoghan Buckley, Donagh Hurley & Cormac Lyons. Well done lads, a great start to the campaign.
