.Football Championship and Oskars wrap..

Summer time and the livin is easy and the GAA season is truly hectic at Club level as the Inter County programme is drawing to a conclusion. We finished our Senior League programme last Sunday and our Junior Hurling and Football league campaigns are also finished. This weekend will, as usual, be busy. On Frida night we have a Final Wrap Up party after our Oskars Fundraiser. On Saturday we have Round 2 of the Junior Football Championship. Next weekend we have the Tony Walsh Cup Final.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL.

Our second game in the Round Robin series in the Mickie O Connor Sponsored East Cork JAFC is scheduled for this weekend. This round sees us take on Midleton,  winners over Youghal in the first Round. Originally scheduled for Lisgoold on Sunday evening the game is now brought forward to Saturday night. This is to enable fans to travel to Croke Park on Sunday for the All Ireland Football Quarter Final game. We defeated Castlemartyr in our first game but obviously the Magpies will be a much stronger side. The venue for Saturday nights fixture had not been confirmed at the time of writing. Best of luck lads NOTE; GAME IS NOW FIXED FOR CARRIGTWOHILL ON SATURDAY NIGHT AT 7PM

SENIOR HURLING LEAGUE.

Bride Rovers 0-20  Glen Rovers 4-20On Sunday last our Senior Hurlers completed their league programme with an away game to table toppers Glen Rovers in the RED FM sponsored County Hurling League Division 2. With the pitch in immaculate condition, both teams showed some excellent touches in a competitive first half. The Glen were first off the mark with two points before two pointed frees from Adam Walsh had the Rovers level. A Patrick Horgan point from play followed by two frees had the Glen in front 0-5 to 0-2. The Rovers were creating good chances and points from Josh Ahern, William Finnegan and Adam Walsh had the sides level again. Both sides swapped points for the remainder of the half with Cillian Tobin, Josh Ahern (2), Adam Walsh (2) and Ronan O Connell getting the Rovers scores. However just before half time Patrick Horgan hammered a 21 metre free to the net to leave the half time score 1-11 to 0-11 in favour of the Glen. The Glen had a perfect start to the second half and opened up an eight point lead with a goal and two points. However the Rovers fought back with points from Adam Walsh (2), William Finnegan and Ronan O Connell to reduce the deficit to four. Adam Walsh had to leave the field with an injury and was a loss to the team. The Glen were now on top with rob Downey in control at centre back and Patrick Horgan a scoring threat as always. Two further goals from the Glen extended their advantage while the Rovers had points from William Finnegan (2), Shane O Connor and Conor Barry (2) to leave the final score 4-20 to 0-20 and a win for the home team. Team & scorers:

C. Hogan, D. Barry, J. Pratt, T. O’Sullivan, K. Kearney, D.Cashman, S. O Connor (0-1), D. Dooley, R. O Connell (0-2), C. Ryan, C.Tobin (0-1), A. Walsh (0-7), J. Ahern (0-3), William Finnegan (0-4), J. Mannix. Subs used: C.OConnor, A. Hynes, C.Barry (0-2), DJ Cahill.

Our next Senior game is the Tony Walsh Tournament v Tallow on Friday 7th July at 7.45pm.

OSKARS WRAP UP.

It’s just a month since we had our Night At The Oskars and everyone is still talking about it. The whole venture was an outstanding success from a financial and promotional point of view. We set a target for the fundraising and amazingly this was more than doubled. The fundraising event were like a Carnival or Festival that wen on for a month. There was lot of hard work involved but mighty fun and craic. The rehearsals and actual filming were magic and will long be remembered.  The most lasting effect of the Oslkars was that fantastic community spirit displayed by all involved. So many got involved as ‘extras’, with costumes, sets, locations, catering and in a myriad of other ways. Again thanks to one and all.. On Friday night in Barry’s Bar we have an Oskars Wrap Up night just to get together and recall a memorable event. Electronic copies of the 7 Oskar Films will be available shortly.

CORK v DERRY

On Sunday in Croke park the Cork footballers take on Derry, the back to back Ulster champions, in the All Ireland Quarter Final. After two great wins against mayo and Roscommon it’s a huge ask to take on another big team for the third Sunday in a  row. John Cleary & Co have done great work with this side and they will have good travelling support on Sunday. We wish them all the best. Safe travelling to all going to the game. For those not travelling the match will be live on RTE whereas, shamefully,  that does not apply to the Armagh v Monaghan and Kerry v Tyrone matches on Saturday.

LOCAL RIVALRY.

You cant beat local rivalry in the GAA! Last weekend in East Cork we had two Hurling League Finals. On Friday night in Caherlag Carrignavar defeated Sars by 20 points to 2 13 in a thriller in the Division 1 Final in before an attendance of 35. On Saturday night we hosted the Division 4 JHL final in Pairc na Bride. Midleton’s 4th team beat Dungourney’s second XV by 2 15 to 0 12 with 34 paying customers present. Twenty four hours later the Junior Hurlers of Fermoy came to play our Junior team (match report elsewhere) and 125 fans attended! Enough said!

TONY WALSH CUP 2023.

The 2023 Final of the ony Walsh Cup in Senior Hurling is fixed for Pairc na Bride on Friday week July 7th with a 7.45 throw in . Our visitors will be another Brideside Team Tulach an Iarann with whom I’ve had many good games over the years. Tallow have Mt. Sion and Fourmilewater as their Championship opponents in Group B of the 2023 Waterford SHC which commences in late July

UNIQUE MINOR FINAL.

On Sunday week July 9th a unique pairing will take to the field in the 2023 All Ireland Minor Football Final. The Athletic grounds in Armagh will be packed for the Derry v Monaghan Final  a first ever All Ulster All Ireland Final between great  rivals. Derry have won the title 5 times, most recently in 2020 and have also lost 6 finals. Monaghan on the other hand have never lifted the winners cup named for Clare Gael Tom Markham. Only once ever did the Farney County contest an All Ireland Minor Final previously, back in 1939 when Rosvcommon won the first of their four titles.

HEFFO MAKES HISTORY.

Pat Heffernan is some man for one man! The Blackrock/Kilfinnane and Limerick county hurlers has had a wonderful career and it aint over yet. Last Sunday in the shadow of Wormwood Scrubs Prison in London Pat played a game with Brother Pearses in the London Senior Hurling League. It was the 78th birthday of his father, another at -who also played with Limerick, and pat Heffernan senior was at the game. What made it so special for the Heffernan clan was that Pt played on the team alongside his sons Fionn and Daithi! They won , defeating Tomas McCurtains by 1 21 to 2 8. Pat  is a great character. He trained our Senior team a few years back and remains great friends with many in the Club. He also trained Clyda Rover and at present trains the Watergrashill Intermediate side. Well done Pat and well done to three generations of the Heffernan family.

UNDER11’s BUSY.

A double header in hurling this weekend with games against Midleton on Saturday and the Glen on Sunday. On Saturday, we headed to Midleton with 22 players. All players played equal time and were tested against a strong home side who played with a man extra in both games. Our lads worked themselves to the bone to make up the difference of the extra man and finished strong to close off a good hour of hurling. We headed for the Glen on Sunday morning to play the first of a 'double header' on the day, with the seniors playing afterwards. The match was played in U12 style with each team playing 15-a-side. The Glen proved to be tough opposition and the exerts of our lads 24 hours earlier against Midleton was very evident as we struggled to keep to the pace of the game at times. However, we showed plenty to suggest that on another day, we would more than hold our own against the city side. The lads enjoyed themselves and went on to support the senior team in the second game of the day. Football training on Wednesday at 6pm in Pynes.

UNDER 13’s TRAINING.

The under 3’s have a break from games at present. Training continues each Wednesday and Saturday.

LOOKING BACK .
