Winning Football Start..
We played Castlemartyr in Ballynoe on Sunday evening in our first Group Game in the 2023 Junior A Grade Football Championship. We won the Michael O Connor Motor Factors sponsored competition in 2021 but we had a very different side for our opening tie in Pairc Naomh Caitrionaigh where local referee Michael Walsh was in charge of the whistle. From the start we played with real intent and drive and took the game to Castlemartyr. We had a stiffish breeze in our favour in the opening quarter.
With some great passages of play and strong linking between the backs, through midfield and into the forwards we got some fine points from Denis, Conleith, Connor and Ed. Castlemartyr found it difficult to penetrate our defence due to some really hard work from the backs. Though we were well on top we probably should have had two green flags in the opening quarter. The changing of the game came in the 21st and the 25th minutes when Josh and Adam scored two great goals which put us in a great position. The half time score was 2:10 to 0:4.
We were now against the even stronger breeze for the second half and knew we would have to absorb a lot of pressure. After a very strong run from midfield, right through the centre of defence Conleith was dragged down in the square for a penalty, which Conor Barry duly converted. From there on Castlemartyr found it very difficult to string some passes together with pressing pressure coming from all angles from our lads. The backs were solid in defence led by Fordy, Davey and Kieran, while our captain Tadgh was a rock as usual with Conor and Jason making great runs up the flanks with some fine scores from all the forwards. It was a great win lads, well done. Final score 3:14 to 0:8. This was a huge team performance after some sketchy league form. Our next match is fixed against Midleton in Lisgoold on Sunday the 2ndof July. Midleton came from behind to win their opening game v Youghal. Our third Round Robin game against the Seasiders is down for decision on July 16th. Just 4 of the team that lined out in the 2021 County JAFC v Urhan in Ahiohill on Saturday November the 11th started on Sunday against Catlemartyr!
Team: Ronan O Riordan, David Barry, Liam Forde, Kieran Kearney, Conor Hazelwood, Tadgh Lawton, Jason Pratt, Conleith Ryan 0:3, Josh Ahern 1:1, Denis Cashman 0:1, Adam Walsh 1:3 DJ Cahill, Conor Barry 1:3 , Cian Hogan 0:1 Ed Cashman 0:2. Subs: Ciaran Cotter, Ciaran O Dowd, Adam Hynes, Louis Roche, William Finnegan, Daniel Dooley, Cillian Barry, Damien Buckley, Ian O Donoghue, Jordan Mannix, Eldon O Connor, Cormac O Sullivan, Ronan O Connell. In other JAFC games Aghada beat Cloyne, Carrigtwohill beat Erin’s Own and Lisgoold beat Glenbower Rovers.. Recently crowned JAFL winners Carrignavar were well beaten by Fr O Neills who won the B grade last year. I had a great chat in Ballynoe on Sunday evening with Castlemartyr stalwart Mossy Hodnett. Mossy started his career with his native Fr O Neill’s, then played with Youghal and finally in Castlemartyr. He played many an Inter-firm game with our own Sean Murphy on the great Imokilly Co op side
BEST WISHES TO BARRY JOHNSON.
All in Bride Rovers extend best wishes to Barry Johnson who suffered a serious leg injury on Friday night in Kildorrery. Barry was on the victorious Ballyhooley Junior Football team that won the Fitzgerald Cup (Avondhu Div 1 JFL) for the first time in the Club’s History with a two -point win over Killavullen. It was an extraordinary game which lasted 77 minutes! It was during the final minutes of the marathon contest that Ballyhooley lost three players, including Barry, to serious injuries. Barry’s playing career to date, at adult level, has been a brilliant one extending close to a quarter of a century. We wish him all the best for a speedy recovery. Well done Ballyhooley on a historic win.
REBEL OG
Under 13 hurling league final. Bride Rovers 4-6 Eire Og 4-19
Our under 13s travelled to Ballinlough last Tuesday for the Premier hurling League Group 3 final against Eire Og. After an excellent league campaign confidence was high. Eire Og started very fast and raced into a big lead which left us a bit shell shocked, it could have been a lot more only for some excellent saves from Zach in goals. However the lads settled and started eating into the lead with goals from Cormac and Liam. We were down 6 at half-time. 2 fast goals at the start of the second half from Fionn and Liam got us right back into it but Eire Og pushed on again with some excellent scores, including some wonderful points. In fairness to the lads they never gave up and worked to the final whistle. Not to be our day unfortunately
WELL DONE CORK.
Who would have thought the Cork Senior Footballers would still be in the Championship a month after the hurlers departure? John Cleary’s men had a superb win over Mayo last Sunday. The reward is a game v Roscommon next Saturday. This is a Home preliminary Quarter Final -now there’s a mouthful of a title for a football game! The game is on in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on this Saturday June 24th at 2 o clock. Our next game is a hurling blitz vs Erins Own at home at 10.00am on this coming Saturday., but there are better days ahead for this group no doubt. Well done to each and every player and the parents who supported the lads.

50 YEARS AGO- JUNE 1973
Having lost the much delayed 1972 East Cork Hurling Final to Dungourney in October there was a great sense of anticipation when we were drawn against the same opponents in the 1973 Championship first round. The death of Dave Ryan in February was a huge blow to the Club. Our league form was poor. Army man Dan Carroll was appointed team trainer and from early May training was going well. The carnival Scene was still very much part of GAA life and before the Championship we had a great win over St Catherines in the Hill tournament before a huge crowd. The Championship tie was played in Castlelyons on June 24th . Level 5 points apiece at half time we took over in the last quarter. At that stage both teams had scored 8 points before we got 4 in a row to lead 0 12 to 0 8 with 4 minutes to go. The 1972 champions finished with a goal and a last minute point to make it a draw before a massive crowd. The replay was a high-scoring game which we won by 2 13 to 4 5.
