Teddy Gone -will never be forgotten..

For many people over 65 the moment is frozen in time -where they were when they heard  that John F Kennedy was shot back in 1963. Same then in March 1979 when the great Christy Ring died. Now Tuesday June the 6th 2023 will forever be etched in our memory – the day that Teddy died.  Teddy McCarthy was equally brilliant as both a hurler and footballer. Forever remembered for his 1990 exploits becoming the first man to win Senior All Ireland medals in both codes in the same year, he was a real superstar. For over ten years he enthralled the Irish sporting public and was a real ‘darling boy’ here in Cork. He had talent and charisma -a swashbuckling divil-may-care player who was so proud of his Sarsfields and Glanmire Clubs in his native parish.  Teddy Mac was one in a million truly- a rare talent that we see occasionally and because he played in the ‘television age’ his deeds will be seen by generations to come.

When St Bartholomew’s Minor Hurlers, captained by Liam Cahill, won the League in 1981 they defeated Riverstown by 4 10 to 2 4 in the Final in Castlelyons. A young Teddy was playing with Riverstown that day. Six years later Teddy and his brother Denis were member of the Glanmire team that won the County Intermediate Football Championship. That Final against Fermoy was played in Rathcormac and Glanmire won by 3 5 to 0 6. Teddy was at midfield. He had a quiet first half but was flying after half time, scoring a point in his side’s win. Interestingly Teddy’s mother Mary (O Keefe) worked in Bartlemy in her youth. This year Teddy was elected vice-chairman of his beloved Sars Club and in April had commenced duties as a Delegate to the East Cork Board. He bore his fame humbly, you could meet Teddy at a B Grade match, a Race Meeting, Colleges game or in Thurles or Croke Park. He had no airs or graces and loved chatting about Gaelic games.  The crowds that turned up last Friday and Saturday gave witness to his popularity and the outpouring of genuine grief seen was testament to the fact that he truly was a hero, an icon, a warrior and a great character. We’ll all miss you Teddy but thanks for fantastic memories, rest in peace now. The Bride Rovers Club extend our heartfelt sympathy to the McCarthy family and the Sarsfields and Glanmire GAA Clubs at this sad time.

COUNTY SENIOR HURLING LEAGUE.

Bride Rovers 3-19  St. Finbarrs 2-14 Last Sunday we welcomed 2022 County Champions  St. Finbarrs to Pairc Na Bride for round 8 of the Red FM sponsored Division 2 Hurling League. With this game being the penultimate match in the league there was still a lot to play for. St. Finbarr’s who were 3rd in the league table were trying to secure a league final place while the Rovers were looking to move up the table away from the threat of relegation. Preceding the game there was a minute silence in memory of Cork legend Teddy Mac who was laid to rest on Saturday. The National Flag was flown at half mast as a mark of respect to Teddy. Referee Aidan Hyland from Kilworth got proceeding underway and from the off the Rovers were working hard. The opening score of the game came from a pointed free from Adam Walsh, the Barrs equalised through Billy Hennessy moments later. A great run by Shane O Connor resulted in a point while Brian Roche added another. The Rovers were starting to dominate proceeding around midfield with Daniel Dooley, Ronan O Connell and Brian Roche getting on plenty ball. For the Barrs, Billy Hennessy was clearing up a lot of ball in their hall back line and Jack Cahalane was a constant threat. Adam Walsh scored a brace of points and Brian Roche got his second and the Rovers sixth point to lead 0-6 to 0-2.

A great run from Cillian Tobin when he cut in from the right to strike an unstoppable shot to the net for the opening goal of the game. The `Rovers second goal came immediately when Brian Roche found William Finnegan on the edge of the square and William duly finished to the net. The Rovers were playing well and further extended their lead with points from Conleith Ryan, Adam Walsh and Ronan O Connell. A long puck out from Cian Hogan was broken down by William Finnegan and Conleith Ryan ran onto the braking ball to smash the sliotar to the top corner for the Rovers third goal. Half time Bride Rovers 3-09 St Finbarrs 0-08. With the game been played at a good intensity in the warm sunshine the Barrs began to reduce the deficit, a defensive error let them in for a goal and Jack Cahalane added some points also. However points from Ronan O Connell (2), Cillian Tobin(2), William Finnegan, Cian O Connor and Adam Walsh (3) ensured the Rovers would not relinquish their lead despite a second goal from the Barrs at the end. The final score was Bride Rovers 3-19 St Finbarrs 2-14.This was a good workmanlike performance from all involved with a total of 3-17 coming from play.

Team and scorers: Cian Hogan, Davy Barry, Jason Pratt, Tadhg O’Sullivan, Conor Hazelwood, Eoin Roche (captain), Shane O Connor (0-1), Ronan O Connell (0-3), Brian Roche (0-3), Conleith Ryan (1-01), Cillian Tobin (1-02), Adam Walsh (0-7 (2F)), Louie Roche, William Finnegan (1-01), Daniel Dooley. Sean played with the Club in the late 1950’s when success was scarce and also served as a Club Officer. He was predeceased by his wife Dolores and is survived by daughters Penny and Bernie, son Philip and his sisters Caroline and Bernadette. At Monday night’s Executive Meeting Evelyn Murphy summed up the whole venture as a wonderful experience. Chairman Pa O Driscoll said that when we first met Kevin Roe on February the 8th we never imagined what the next three and a half months would bring. An Oskars party will be held on June 30th. It is hoped to have copies of the 7 films in digital format available shortly.

MUNSTER FINAL

What an occasion it was in Limerick on Sunday last as battling super champions Limerick pipped the Banner men in a titanic game. Many pundits can envisage these two teams in the All Ireland Hurling Final in a few weeks time.

JAFC.   We open our Junior A Grade football championship round robin campaign this weekend. We are in a 4 team group with three games to play. We begin against Castlemartyr on next Sunday evening in Ballynoe at 6.30pm. Go for it lads.

JHL DIV 4.

We played Dungourney in our last Group game in the JHL Division 4 on Monday night. In what was effectively a league Semi Final, a win would see us promoted and contest the Div 4 Final  v Midleton. Exams meant we were short a few players and on the night Dungourney’s second XV defeated us by 1 13 to 1 5- full report next week.

JHL DIV 1 Division 1 vs Killeagh on 7th of June.

We knew going into a game anything other than a win would see us returning to Division 2 of the league for next year.

We started the game well and Jason got a point in the 1st minute. Killeagh got the next two points before Conor got one from a free followed by a point from Eddie. Killeagh responded with two more points before Louis got on the score board to leave us trailing by 1 (5pts to 4 after 20 minutes). Killeagh were very lively and seem to be winning all the breaking ball and they went on to score another 6 points before half time with our only 2 responses coming from points from Cormac and Conor leading Killeagh leading 11 pts to 6 at half time. We started the 2nd half well and two frees from Conor had the gap back to 3. Killeagh got 3 of the next 4 points, our point coming from another free from Conor to restore their 5 point gap before Louis finished a great move to the back of the net to leave it 1-9 to 14. Killeagh responded with another point before a point from Seamus and a monster free from Shuan had the gap back to the minimum 10 minutes into the second half.  Killeagh upped it again and scored 5 of the next 6 points to restored a 5-point cushion of 20 pts to 1-12. Our lads continued to work hard all the way to the finish but couldn't close the gap with the teams going score for the next 10 minutes before Killeagh got a goal with the final score of the match to round off a well deserved win for them by 1-22 to 1-14. This was our Junior team’s 1st year back up in division 1 league for several years and saw us being very competitive in all our games and the experience will stand well to our young squad in the Championship.  Team, S Knox, L Collins, D Cashman, J Connor, A Hynes, L Forde, A Buckley, C O'Sullivan, J Pratt, D Buckley, J Mannix, DJ Cahill, L Roche, E Cashman, C Barry. Subs M Liddane, S Ahern, K Cotter, O Roche.
