BUSY, BUSY, BUSY.
It might be only early February but already Pairc na Bride is a hie of activity. With the Monday Night Ireland Lighting Up walking, team training and Coaching Courses all underway the season of 2023 is well and truly underway. It’s only a few short years ago that our Club held the first ever Foundation Level GAA Coaching course – in Bartlemy Hall. Back then we had a handful of members interested in teaching the skills of Gaelic Games to the youth of our parish. All’s changed in recent times with close on 100 fully qualified coaches ‘on our books’ now. This past week we had a further 37 participating in the Foundation Course which gives the basic skills needed for under age team training. All those completing this Course are also undergoing the Garda Siochana Vetting programme and also the Safeguarding Course. All these are vitally necessary in today’s world. Well done to all who are giving so much time and effort to our youth. Last Monday was the St Bridgid’s Day Bank Holiday but we still had a fine crowd out walking in the Ireland Lights Up campaign. It was a lovely dry, calm and crisp evening. It’s fantastic to see the crowds each Monday evening and marvellous to meet people who had no previous connection with the GAA Club. We want to cater for all sectors of our community so taking part in healthy exercise is just brilliant. Orla Dorgan and her Committee have put in a huge effort with the organising of this Healthy Club initiative. A big ‘thank you’ to our hardworking Grounds Committee for the work done since Christmas. The walkway around the pitch is now fully completed. The fencing around the pitch perimeter by the Juvenile Field is also finished. The work on the additional car-parking area is well advanced. All this work is fantastic and funded in a major way by the Club 100 Scheme. We have close on 200 members joined this Scheme. All those involved contribute a set amount each month to the Club. In return they have Club Membership, entry into the weekly Lotto, the Rebels Bounty draw each month and the confined End Of Year draw. For full details on how to join contact our Cisteoir at 085 7124312.
SCOR na BPAISTI. This week saw the closing date in East Cork for Scorn a bPaisti. The Club is working with staff in both National Schools in the parish to facilitate having entries in the Scor which will be on at the end of this month.
ONE SWALLOW NEVER MADE A SUMMER BUT…. I know, I know it’s only early February and John Kiely and his Limerick hurlers wont be suffering from lack of sleep yet after last Saturday night. Limerick haven’t much training done yet, were missing many stars and we know that ‘one swallow never made a summer’ but despite all that there was much to admire in Cork’s second half display in Pairc Ui Chaoimh last Saturday night. True, winning the League wont be high on Limerick’s ‘wish-list’ for this year but still a win is a win. Well done to Brian and Eoin Roche and their fellow Rebels on a good start to the NHL. Last year above in the Gaelic Grounds Cork bate Limerick by 9 points in the equivalent tie yet it was Limerick who retained the Liam McCarthy Cup. Next Sunday Cork venture to Pearse Stadium in Salthill to take on Galway in Round 2 of the NHL. Barry Murphy played well for Limerick last Saturday night- Barry is nearly ‘one of our own’ -his O Keeffe/Curtin relations all came from Greenhall in Rathcormac. LATE NEWS; Great to see Brian & Eoin Roche picked v Galway on Sunday.

UNDER 13’ BACK TRAINING.Our under 13 hurlers are back training each Wednesday night at 6.30 in the Big Astro. New players are always welcome so all boys born in the year 2010 are asked to come along. Speaking of the under 13 grade the Bride Rovers Club put up a Cup back in the 1990’s in memory of the late Dave Ryan -who died 50 years ago, in 1973. We won the trophy in 1995 when a team captained by present Club Chairman Pa O Driscoll defeated Aghada, Watergrasshill and Dungourney.
CATHYS COTTAGE.
Best of luck to the Gubbins family of Hollyhill , Bartlemy on their new Self-catering venture. The former Walsh and Gubbins Homestead is now available as a beautiful self-catering use and will be welcome addition to the Tourism offering in the Bride Valley.
DAVE RYAN 1910-1973.
On Sunday week February 19th we plan to honour the memory of former Bride Rovers Clubman Dave Ryan. Dave was born in Kilworth and came to Bartlemy in the late 1950’s. From 1964 until his sudden death in February 1973 Dave was hugely involved in the Rovers Club. He was an adult Club Officer and Selector but will be best remembered for his work with the juvenile players in the parish. He was a legend in his lifetime and in truth got into so many scrapes on and off the field. He was known to have tripped an opposition speedy forward, shout ‘Mind The Bull’ at a carnival match to distract the goalie, take ten under 14s in his car -in truth he lived for Bride Rovers. He was buried in February 1973 in Macroney cemetery in his native parish of Kilworth. Up until now no memorial to Dave exists but this will be rectified on Sunday week when the Bride Rovers Club will unveil a plaque in his memory.
1964; Dave appointed a member of Club Committee along with Tony O Brien, Tom Heskin, Tony Walsh and Willie Cotter. Dave proposed that the Membership fee be 5/-.
1965 Dave on Club Committee , 1966 Minor Selector(joined with St Catherine’s) 1967 -1969 Football Selector. 1966 -1973 Dave was in charge of ‘getting the Bartlemy lads to games’.
On Sunday week February 19th we will gather in Macroney at 2 o clock to honour and pay tribute to a man who made a huge contribution to the Bride Rovers Club.
