UNDER 19 HURLING.

Newcestown are now down to play Owen Gaels in the West Division Under 19 Final on this coming Saturday November6th. As it stands this game is down for decision in Dunmanway on Saturday afternoon so we’ll have a look at the opposition.  Owen Gaels are a combination of Oliver Plunketts/Ballinascarthy and Kilmeen. Our provisional fixture at present is Bride Rovers v Newcestown/Owen Gaels in Ballygarvan on Saturday November 12th at 3.30 -but remember this is a ‘provisional’ fixture. With Ballinascarthy advancing in the County Junior Hurling Championship all could be changed.

CLUB AGM.

Monday November the 14th is the date set for the Bride Rovers GAA Club Annual General meeting so make a date in your Diary. Other Meeting Dates coming up are the East Cork GAA Divisional Convention in Dungourney on Wed November 30th, East Cork Scor AGM in Lisgoold on November 18th at 7.30pm and the Cork County GAA Convention on Saturday December 10th

ST COLMANS ADVANCE.

At a wet and windy Knocklong last Wednesday St Colmans had a good win over Tulla CBS – the team that knocked them out of the Harty last year. After a draw with Midleton CBS in the first round this was a ‘must win’ game for thew Fermoy College as there are just three teams in their Group so a win would guarantee a place in the knockout stages in the New Year. Colmans found the going hard on a tough day for hurling but came good in the second half. We had six players involved and they all did well. Denis Cashman was full back, solid and strong. At no 7 Conor Hazlewood did a show of defending and hurled well. The ‘all Rovers’ midfield pairing of Ronan O Connell and David Barry were very prominent. Davy picked up a leg injury in the Barrs junior game in Rostellan the Saturday before but played solidly while he was on. Cillian Tobin was named at full forward and had a roving role. His worktrate was superb and he unselfishly gave the sliotar to his comrades in better positions for several scores. Josh Ahern and Louie Roche came on in the second half. So Colman’s are through to the next phase. They won by 9 points so if Midleton beat Tulla (I expect they will) it will all come down to scoring differences to determine which team will top the group. Last Sunday in Thurles Klruane McDonaghs won the Tipperary SHC title bridging a 37 year gap when they defeated Kiladangan in the Final. Based in the villages of Kilruane, Ardcroney and Cloughjordan in North Tipperary the Club takes it’s name from it’s most famous son Thomas McDonagh who was one of the signatories to the 1916 Proclamation. After the Rising McDonagh was one of the leaders executed. Thomas McDonagh taught English, French and Latin in St Colman’s from 1903 until 1908. While in Fermoy he helped found the Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland, the ASTI. McDonagh Terrace in Fermoy is named after him.

UNDER 14 ’s IN PAIRC UI CHAOIMH.

Bride Rovers U14s travelled to Pairc Ui Chaoimh 4G Astro pitch last Saturday to take part in the Munster 10 a-side competition. The format was an unusual one for the boys and there were a lot of questions from all in advance as to how the set-up worked.  Within minutes of the throw-in against the first opposition, St Colmcilles (Whites Cross and Carrignavar), all became clear. The game was quite an open one with the opposition giving it their all and it led to a tight match coming down the straight - at the final whistle the Rovers’ boys and their mentors were convinced they had won but the referee had a different scorecard and had it at a draw; not a bad start though.  The next match was against Premier 1 team Midleton who, within seconds of the throw-in, demonstrated their quality and it was quite obvious they were a strong, physically imposing team with the skills to match.  That didn’t stop the boys from giving their all and they made Midleton work for every score they got. In the end Midleton were comfortable winners.  Due to their superior scoring difference (compared to St Colmcilles) the Rovers played Mallow in the second teams play off.  The boys started strongly and were well in control throughout the match with the majority of possession, loads of scoring chances but not the scores on the board to match.  With 5 minutes to go the boys seemed well in control but 2 goals in the closing minutes turned it around for Mallow who edged it by a point 2-4 to 2-3.  The day was a great experience for the boys who enjoyed the different format and got to experience Pairc Ui Chaoimh once more as a bonus. Panel:  Owen Ryan, David Dixon, Jamie Walsh, Eanna Lyons, Jack Lynch, James Finn, Darragh O’Farrell, Shane O’Dowd, Matthew Kenny, Adam Kelleher, Eoghan Buckley, Con McCormack, James Larkin and Cathal Barry. Well done lads, great to see lads hurling well into the end of the season.

 MARATHON WALSHES.

Well done to Michael and Brendan Walsh who both competed in and completed the Dublin City Marathon last Sunday. The two lads did a massive fundraiser and to date have gathered in over €6000 for the IMDA the Irish Motor Neuron Disease Association. Donations are still being accepted, well done Mike and Brendan.

EAST CORK GAA CHAT NIGHT.

The late Noel Hogan of Youghal GAA Club came up with the idea awhile back of an informal get-together of former GAA players and Club Officials in a relaxed format. The Get together goes ahead in Youghal GAA Club on Friday November the 11th at 7.30pm, all are welcome.

MEETINGS.

Last week was a week of meetings with gatherings at home in East Cork and in the HQ of Cork GAA. The matter of the Age Groups to  be put in place for teams next year and in subsequent seasons is still very much up in the air. We had a consultative assembly in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Tuesday night with no ‘white smoke’. The feeling was that most Clubs would prefer to have Minor grade revert to under 18 and that the players on Club Minor teams could not play adult competition.  Many small clubs are against this because they have very limited numbers of players. No decision will now be made until GAA annual Congress next February so it’s likely Minor will remain at under 17 for 2023 at least. At Tuesday’s meeting there was strong support or having meaningful under 18 Competitions in Cork next year. On Thursday we had a gathering to discuss respect for players and referees and the various issues related. Playing players in only their own age grade was discussed and the concept of ‘fun for  all’ rather than ‘win at all costs’ was thrashed out.  Trying to avoid player drop-off  is vital to ensure adequate numbers for adult teams in future years. It was a good positive meeting. Thanks to Mike and Rosarie for facilitating the event.

IF AT FIRST YOU DON’T SUCEED….

The answer is ‘try and try again’, well if ever any GAA Club wants an example of resilience  and determination to succeed we need look no farther than the corner of West Waterford where there are more trees than people. I speak of course of the Combined Parishes of Knockanore, Koilwatermoy and Glendine -total population of around 950. In this area in 1953 a new GAA Club was formed. Initially it seemed destined to be named ‘Bride Rovers’ as all the players were from the Bride Valley. At the last minute the name of the little three-leafed plant  The Shamrock was chosen so The Shamrocks Club was founded. They have won Western and County Titles at Junior and  Intermediate level  at both hurling and football. For the last four seasons they have contested the Waterford Junior Football County Final but lost all four Finals. Well they won in the West again this year and last Saturday lined out in their fifth County Final in a row. On this occasion they made no mistake defeating St Mollerans of Carrick on Suir by 3 11 to 1 6. Well done to all concerned and best of luck to Shamrocks in the Munster Club Championship where they will face the Limerick winners. Shamrocks last won this title in 1984 when Joe (Jody) O Neill was captain- his son Tomas and three cousins are on the 2022 team.

GREYHOUND SUCCESS.

Well done to local greyhound  trainers and great GAA Supporters Gerard Gubbins  and Liam Mannix on their great recent successes in Youghal and Curraheen Park. On Monday week last in Youghal Hollyhill Zoey won a race followed two nights later by three more ‘Hollyhill’s’ Moll, Sassy and Abby. Then in Curraheen Park last Saturday night Lian Mannix’s ‘Bartlemy Jas’ won a Stake semi final. Congrats to both keep it going.

CAR BOOT SALE.

Hopefully it will be third time lucky on Sunday next for the Parish Car Boot Sale. The Sales in September and October were badly affected by rain. After a very wet week it might be gloriously sunny on Sunday next. Items for the Parish Stall are accepted on Saturday morning. We are always looking for help on the Sunday. If you can spare an hour or two between 7am and 2pm please contact Billy Finnegan or Mossy O Sullivan, all help is appreciated.

COMMUNITY ALERT MEETING.

On tonight Thursday November the 3rd there is a Community Alert meeting in Bartlemy Hall dealing with safety and crime prevention. The meeting will be facilitated by members of the Garda Siochana. The meeting is timed for 8pm.
