Barr's sink Junior Bs at Seaside ..

When Damien Buckley sent a free sailing over the bar in Rostellan last Saturday to level the scores we all thought two ten minute periods of extra time beckoned. The referee had other ideas and let the play develop. In those minutes he added on St Finbarrs got a goal and a point. So by the seaside in East Cork the hopes of our Junior B team progressing to the County semi final were washed away. We were just gone into the 33rd minute of the second half when Damien tied up the game at  0 17 to 2 11 after we had staged a great comeback late in the game. Originally fixed for Caherlag the game was switched to the Aghada grounds  in Rostellan after the torrential overnight rain on Friday night. In fairness the Rostellan pitch held up well on Saturday. With a wind blowing in from the sea we had the breeze and the fall of ground with us in the opening half but found scores hard to come by.  Of our first half tally of eight points half came from frees scored by Damian, three from Edmond Cashman who always looked dangerous and a point from an impossible angle by Jesse. After eleven minutes the sides were level on 0 4 each but we had also struck four wides, we had seven in total in the first half. When St Finbarr’s got a goal after what looked like a very obvious ‘throw ball’ we looked in trouble but in fairness the backline tore into the contest and we had reached parity by the break.  The wind had eased a bit but we were still going to be under pressure in the second half. When the city side added 1 2 early on after the restart we found ourselves five points adrift. A lesser team might have thrown in the towel but in the tradition of our Club the team just got on with it and thundered back into the contest. We threatened to raise green flags twice but the Barrs defence fouled. With Damien unerring from placed balls and points from team Captain DJ Cahill and Seamus Ahern we took over in the last few minutes.  Seamus Ahern’s point brought us within a point of the Barrs and when Damien levelled it we were delighted looking forward to extra time as we seemed to be finishing livelier than the Barrs. AS I said, inexplicably, the game went on and we were beaten by four points. It was an awful way to lose out after displaying such fighting spirit to  come right back into the game in the second half. Sport can by joyous and then so cruel. Even in defeat all the lads who played last Saturday can hold their heads high  as they gave of their best on the day. Thanks lads for the great displays in this championship season . I suppose that day in Lisgoold back in August  when we met Cloyne in the first round and found ourselves down five points in the second half little did we think we would win out the Championship. That’s sport for you so now we must focus on 2023 and Junior A Hurling in East Cork. As well as the players special credit and thanks go to Aiden Dorgan, Barry hazelwood and paddy Croke for the colossal work put in with this group of lads this season. Team and scorers Ben Hogan, Liam Collins, Mike Liddane, Jack Connor, Conor Hazlewood , Liam Forde,  Adrian Buckley, Fergus Collins, Oisin Roche, DJ Cahill Captain (0 2), David Barry , Damien Buckley ( 0 9), Jesse O Keefe  (0 1), Eddie Cashman(0  4), Seamus Ahern(0 1), Shaun Knox, John O Sullivan, Jack Kearney, Nicky Kelleher, Aidan Hayes, Brian Collins, Thomas Macak,  Jacob Powell.

GREAT WIN FOR BARTLEMY NS.

It was an early start for the Bishop O Brien NS, Bartlemy boys team on Tuesday morning last. With a 10 o clock throw in at Pairc UI Chaoimh they were on the road to GAA HQ in plenty time. Having won all their group games the Bartlemy lads were in confident mood for the Final against Ballynoe. Two buses took supporters from the School and many parents and grandparents were also in attendance. On a magnificent surface Bartlemy had the aid of a nice breeze in the opening half. Scores were hard to come by with good defending from Ballynoe. We had heaps of possession but the shooting was off target. At times we looked like getting on top but were pegged back and it was 1 3 for both sides at the break. A few positional switches at half time had the required result. All over the spacious pitch Bartlemy took over and the scores started coming. Each player kept battling and coming forward and put together some great passes whilst playing lovely football. In the end Bartlemy won by 3 10 to 1 3.  Happy first cousins Cathal O Brien and Jack O Donovan accepted the cup on behalf of the team.

Well done all the players  Finn O Donoghue score 2 1, Finn Lynch 1 3, Liam Carr 0 3, Bobby Harrington 0 2 and Diarmuid O Regan 0 1. Well done to Paudie Walsh NT, Trish O Sullivan and Imelda Harrington who were in charge of the team. Panel; Dan Hogan, Jack O Donovan, Cathal O Brien, Nathan Cronin, Liam Carr, Bobby Harrington, Finn O Donoghue, Diarmuid O Regan, Thomas Hegarty, Fionn Lynch, Killian Murphy, James O Regan, and Darragh Murphy. The win was a fitting finale for Paudie Walsh NT who retires this week after a teaching career of 38 years in Bartlemy. Paudie began his career in the old national School in Hightown and then moved to the new school in Bartlemy Village. He has served the community in an outstanding fashion over the years and many hundreds of pupils have benefitted from his expertise and tuition. On behalf of all in Bartlemy we say ‘Well done and Thank You Paudie’

HARD LUCK CASTLEMARTYR.
I remember many years back we were playing Cobh in a Minor Hurling Final. We went a point ahead near the end. Then in added time we sent over another point. We expected the final whistle but two points is a dangerous lead- if you’re up just one the opposition would be going for a levelling point. Down and there’s only one option. In that Minor Final Cobh sent the sliotar ‘route one’- into the square and after a shemozzle it ended up in the back of the net and we were beaten by a point. I thought of that game as I drove from Rostellan last Saturday and listened to the closing stages of the PIHC Final replay on the car radio. It seemed Castlemartyr had the Cup won leading by two points deep, deep into the added three minutes. Then it happened and Inniscarra hit a winning goal. Heartbreak and ecstasy. For Inniscarra it’s been a long wait since we defeated them in the 2003 Final and we extend best wishes to them. For our East Cork ‘neighbours’ Castlemartyr it’s been an incredible journey from Junior, through two grades of Intermediate and into the PIHC Final. The Joyce and Martin brothers on the Castlemartyr side have plenty cousins on our parish.

A mighty County IFC win for Kilshannig last Sunday over Aghabullogue. Well done to all concerned. EAST CORK GAA CHAT NIGHT.

The late Noel Hogan of Youghal GAA Club came up with the idea awhile back of an informal get-together of former GAA players and Club Officials in a relaxed format. The Get together goes ahead in Youghal GAA Club on Friday November the 11th at 7.30pm, all are welcome.

JUNIOR B WINNERS.

Several people have asked me about our B Grade winning teams over the years. Centre back on this year’s team was Liam Forde and amazingly Liam occupied the same position in the 2007 win over Sars. Because the 1993 and 1995 winning teams were so close several players were on both teams. Tom Kearney figured on the winning 1975 team and was also there in 1993, bridging an 18 year gap. Of our first winning team panel in 1966 Derry Cotter, Eddy and Seanie Barry were there in 1975.

Our winning teams down the years were 1966;  J. Gettings, T. Walsh, H. Hazlewood, E, Barry, M. Twomey, P. Murphy, M. Murphy, S. Murphy, J. Meade, G. Barry, S. Barry, B. O Connell, E. Hoskins, D. Canty, T. O Brien, , W. Sheehan Captain.
