 Junior B Final on Saturday..

After a semi final win over Castlelyons last Saturday our Junior B hurlers are through to the East Cork Final this coming Saturday. Killeagh will provide the opposition in the Divisional decider in Dungourney at 2 o clock.  Saturday’s game was played as a curtain raiser to the East Cork Junior A Final between Erin’s Own and Cobh.  Like most ‘local derbies’ the semi final was a close and dour game. The first half was very even with free taking contributing to many of the scores on both sides. Damien Buckley raised white flags from early frees -in total Damien hit over 6 frees and Seanie Knox sent over three.  We led by 4 to 2  and again by 6 to 3  and by the break we were up 0 8 to 0 5. Two frees early in the second half were pointed by Damian and we were up by 5. Castlelyons could well have had a goal but great defending from Jack Connor and Liam Forde saved the day. We went ahead 11 to 6 but back came Castlelyons again. Our defence was excellent as they repelled attack after attack. The last ten minutes were hectic. We were four clear 0 12 to 0 8 and looked in control but two points from Castlelyons brought our lead down to just two. A point from Edmond Cashman was a great score and we held on to win by 14 points to ten. It wasn’t a brilliant game but it was a great win. From Ben Hogan out the defence played superbly. Cousins Fergus and Seamus did well at midfield. Up front team Captain DJ Cahill led his forwards but we found it hard to get scores. At ally of just 5 points from play was low but a win is a win and we are in the Final -our seventh in all 1966, 1975, 1983, 1985, 2000, 2007 and now 2022. Squad and scorers was as follows B Hogan, L Collins, M Liddane, J Conor, C Hazelwood, L Forde, O Roche, S Ahern, F Collins, DJ Cahill (Captain), D Barry (0-2), D Buckley (0-6 fs), J O'Keeffe (0-2), E Cashman (0-1), S Knox (0-3 fs), A Buckley, T Macak, J Kearney, N Kelleher, A Hayes, J O'Sullivan, J Powell, B Collins. In Youghal’s Coperalley grounds on Sunday Killeagh defeated Erin’s Own in the second semi final. Killeagh came from behind to finish the game strongly and will be tough opposition in the decider.  Down the years Willie Sheehan (1966), Pat O Connor (1975), Tom Mulcahy(1983), Denis Mulcahy(!95) and Jim O Connor in 2007 have led Junior B teams to success so hopefully DJ Cahill can do the same. The game is now fixed for 2 o clock in Dungourney on Saturday so best of luck lads and to the management team, go for it lads.

JUNIOR C HURLING.

At a wet and very windy Shanagarry pitch on Sunday morning last our Junior C Team played their third ‘Round Robin’ game in the Championship. Though we were out of contention for Championship honours well done to the eighteen players who travelled. Conditions were terrible for hurling with a  near gale-force wind blowing up the pitch. Despite playing against the storm Craig O Callaghan had the first point of the game. It turned out to be our only score as Russell Rovers scored nine. It would have been easy for our lads to be overwhelmed in the second half but instead they tore into the contest. Despite conceding an early second half goal the team really gave it a lash.  Using the wind to great advantage we scored great points. Brian Collins and John O Sullivan became attacking defenders and suddenly we were right back into the game.  White flags from Dave Burke from frees and from play, John Buckley Leon O Flynn, Pa O Driscoll and Paddy Croke brought us right into the game. With ten minutes left we were just two points in arrear. Mike Carey’s plan of fourteen players in front of the ball worked well. Unfortunately the other Rovers got through for two goals. The score of the game came from our keeper Jerome O Driscoll. Taking a short puckout to Tomas Kearney Jerome took the return pass. He passed the sliotar over their centre back, caught it again and from nearly 140 yards out sent it over the bar -what a score! In the end we lost by 5 points, £ 11 to 0 15 after a great effort, well done lads.  Panel; Jerome O'Driscoll, Mark O'Connell, Tomás Kearney, Leon O'Flynn, Brian Collins, John O'Sullivan , Seán O'Brien, Jack Kearney, Jacob Powell, Pa O'Driscoll, Dave Burke, Cian Howard, John Buckley, Richie Cahill, Craig O'Callaghan,  Paddy Croke, Danny Kelleher, Damien Healy. Thanks also to   Jake Tobin, Brian Lahive, Donal Ryan, Terry Broderick, Shane O'Flynn, Alan Barry and Stephen Hackett who played in earlier games.

UNDER 19 COUNTY HURLING.

Just last week when we won the East (1) Under 19 hurling championship Final against St Catherine’s we thought that was the end of the campaign for that team. Then at last Tuesday night’s County Board meeting came the announcement that a County Competition is to be staged in all the grades which is great news. On the last weekend of October- the Bank Holiday weekend we are down to play the semi final, probably above in the 4G pitch at Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Our opponents are not decided yet as Newcestown must play Owen Gaels( Ballinascarthy/Oliver Plunketts combination) and we await the winners. The under 19 grade has been problematic this year in it’s inaugural season and depending on what Age Grades are agreed for the future we might never again have Under 19 so make the most of it while it’s there.

UNDER 12’s PIPPED.

Our under 12 hurlers travelled to Newtownshandrum on Friday night to play the home side under lights in their semi final. After a great game and some marvellous hurling we were defeated by four points. This is probably the last Competitive game for this team this season but we hope to organise a few challenge game for them over the next few weeks. Well done lads.

PAT SHEEHAN RIP.

It was with a profound sense of sadness and shock that we learned of the death last week in Bantry of Pat Sheehan formerly of Ballinwillin, Bartlemy. Pat came from a great community and GAA family. He was an outstanding hurler and footballer with Bride Rovers from 1965, when he played Junior while under 16, until the mid 1970’s. He was involved in that ’Golden Era’ where we contested  two B Grade Finals and 5 A Grade Finals. He was a powerful player with a fun-loving temperament which made him popular with everyone in Bride Rovers. As a career he chose to become a Forester which took him to the national Forestry School in Avondale Co. Wicklow. Whilst in Wicklow he continued to play with Bride Rovers – often travelling down to matches with Seanie Barry who was studying in Kiltegan. In 1971 Pat was a member of the Wicklow Junior Hurling team that won the Leinster and All Ireland Championship. Wicklow defeated Louth, Meath and Kildare -in the Leinster Final where Pat scored 1 3. They beat Monaghan in the All Ireland semi final. They met Hertfordshire in the Final at Aughrim in October. With the Exiles leading  by 3 9 to  1 12 “ it was Pat Sheehan, with a minute to go and Wicklow three points down, he gathered the rebound from his own 21 yard free and hammered home the equaliser” (Irish Independent).  Pat also scored four points in that game. The replay was in England and after 60 minutes the game was a draw. The ref kept playing for another ten minutes and when Hertfordshire scored a point he blew the whistle and declared them winners! They got the Cup but that wasn’t the end of the story. Wicklow objected that two ‘official’ periods of extra time should have been played as per the GAA’s Official Guide.  The GAA ordered a replay and in late November in Croke Park -with the same referee, the third meeting of the siders took place, Wicklow won and were All Ireland Champions. Pat and his wife Gorretta settled in West Cork, their son Eric won a County SFC title with Bantry and they were an integral family in the Bantry community where Pat was often called upon to sing – no better man to do so. A proud son of Bartlemy and a great Bride Rovers man we extend our deepest sympathy to his wife, family, brothers and sisters and all his relatives.

 CLUB MEETING.

An attendance of 23 were present for the Club Executive Meeting on last Monday night. As the Clubrooms are being painted the meeting was held in the Old School Rathcormac. Chairman Gerard lane presided, with a full Agenda. A long discussion took place on the Age Grades, team management for 2023, results, fixtures, Club Safety Statement, player development and well-being, financial report and our new Pitch Development.

AGM

The Bride Rovers GAA Club will be held on November 14th. All are welcome.

THE EAST’s AWAKE.

These are great times for hurling in East Cork. With so many Clubs in the Imokilly Division operating at Senior and Intermediate levels our national game is on a high in the Barony. Last Sunday it was an East Cork Hurling Double at HQ. Dungourney -tipped for relegation early in the year, captured the Intermediate A title with a great win over Cloughduv and while we congratulate our neighbours we say hard luck to our own Jason Mannix who lined out with the Mid Cork team this year. At the third time of asking Fr O Neills won the Senior A Championship with a two point win over Courcey Rovers, well done to Dungourney and O Neill’s. The pressure is on Castlemartyr next Sunday when they meet Inniscarra in the premier Intermediate Final to make it ‘three in a line’ in East Cork.

IMOKILLY 1997/1998.

The Senior County winning side of 1997 and 1998, captained by our now Juvenile Chairman William O Riordan will be special guests at the Co. Final ‘tween the Barrs and the Rockies. Our own Barry Murphy won a SHC medal with Imokilly that year.

COLM POWER WINS EUROPEAN MEDAL.

Congrats to Colm Power. on winning a European 15 a side Hurling Championship medal with the Amsterdam Gaels team.
