Seniors scorch to Semi Final..

Exactly a decade ago, in September of 2012, our  Senior Hurlers met Cloyne in a crucial relegation battle in Pairc Ui Rinn. That year we had lost our three championship games -by a narrow margin in each case, and in the closing minutes of a game where we led for a long time Cloyne had a two point lead. As time ticked away we were awarded a 21 yard free to the left hand side of the pitch. For dissent the ref moved the sliotar more to the centre. Certainly twelve of the Cloyne team defended their goal as our keeper Dinny Fitzgerald sent in a  bullet of a shot. The shot was blocked and half cleared and Dave Burke pulled on it and sent it to the net -we won by a point, 2 13 to 2 12. We hadn’t met Cloyne since at Senior level and all last week  memories of that afternoon kept coming back. Cloyne lost their first two Round Robin games but when they beat Newcestown and Fermoy beat Mallow their championship season was kick started again. Just a handful of players from a decade ago were left for last Saturdays encounter but the thought of Cloyne getting their chance to put one over on us still lingered. At glorious Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Saturday our lads put on a great display from the start. Just Jason Pratt, Daniel Dooley and Michael Collins were there from the Pairc Ui Rinn win and Cloyne had only two or three of that side also. With a semi final place on offer our team relished the wide expanse of Pairc Ui Chaoimh. From the throw in we took the game to Cloyne. Early points from Adam Walsh, Brian Roche and William Finnegan gave us the ideal start though playing against the breeze. Our backs seemed well on top early on though Cloyne came to within a point of us on ten minutes. Leading by 8 points to 3 on nineteen minutes our forwards then upped the ante. In a blistering twelve minutes we scored 3 5 to Cloyne’s three points. Our first goal came from a perfect Cillian Tobin pass to Brian who rounded his man -green flag.  Cillian was fouled in the square -penalty, Adam’s shot was saved by Costine but Brian Roche was quick off the mark to boot the sliotar to the net.  Cillian then hit a beauty of a goal and we were up by 3 13 to 0 6 at the break. A huge lead but in fairness there was no slacking early in the second half  when we hit over six early points. Cloyne came into the contest with two goals but a goal from Adam Walsh sealed a great 4 24 to 2 11 win for us. This was essentially a great team performance- ok Cloyne weren’t as good as we might have expected but from Cian Hogan right up through the team our lads played lovely hurling.

We might worry how Cloyne scored 2 5 in the second half but getting to the semi final was our ambition when Shane Scanlon threw in the sliotar at 5 o clock last Saturday and we achieved that. Well done lads and well done to all the backroom team- many hands make light work. A special word of thanks to our mighty crowd of supporters on the night. Team & Scorers; Cian Hogan, Tadhg O Sullivan, Shane Walsh, Jason Pratt , Paddy O Flynn Captain 0 2, Eoin Roche, Shane O Connor 0 1, Kieran Kearney 0  3, Daniel Dooley, William Finnegan 0  3, Ronan O Connell 0 2, Adam Walsh 1 5 , Cillian Tobin  1 2, Brian Roche 2 1, Conleith Ryan 0 4, Josh Ahern, Conor Barry 0 1,  Michael Collins. A semi final against Fr O Neills on Saturday week is the next game up.  That’s Saturday September 24th at 7.30pm in Pairc Ui Chaoimh with Castlelyons meeting Castlemartyr in the curtain raiser  in the semi final of the PIHC.  Pics from the game courtesty of Denis O Flynn Ladysbridge http://briderovers.ie/gallery/442001/All_Recent_Pictures

UNDER 10’s IN THE PAIRC.

It was a huge thrill for our under 10 hurlers to get to play in Pairc Ui Chaoimh last Saturday night. At half time in the Senior game our boys played two mini games against St Colmans (Cloyne/Russell Rovers) and it was brilliant to see these young hurlers getting to show their skills on the Cork ‘Field of Dreams’. Thanks to the organisers, ,parents and mentors for your cooperation.

JBHC GAME RECHEDULED.

Monsoon type rain on Sunday morning last meant the pitch in Dungourney was unplayable for our Junior B tie against Midleton. The game has now been refixed for 12 noon on next Sunday, venue to be finalised.

MINORS IN COUNTY SEMI FINAL.

Our Minor Hurlers are in the Premier 2 Minor County Semi Final on this coming Friday night September 16th. With a win over St Catherines’, a loss to Shandrum and a draw with Mallow the team qualified for the Quarter Final. This was cracker of a game against Aghada played under lights in Killeagh and we emerged winners by 2 11 to 1 7. On Friday night we play a very good Killeagh side in the County Semi Final. The venue is Cork’s famed Mardyke – I don’t think Bride Rovers have ever played there before. Our game throws in at 6.45 followed at 8pm by Erins Own and Shandrum. Go for it lads.

MINOR FOOTBALLKiltha Og 3-14   Bride Rovers 0-7.

Last Friday we travelled to Castlemartyr to play Kiltha og in the East football championship semi final.

Having played two  football championship games in three days in August we then had to wait five weeks for the semi final.   Surely fixtures can be better organised? We are not using this as an excuse. Kiltha Og were far better than us on the night and were deserving winners and we wish them best of luck in the final.  Panel; Ronan O Riordan, Eldon O Connor, Kieran Cotter, Darragh Kielty, Adam Hynes,  Denis Cashman, Jack Collins,  Cormac Barry, Cormac O Sullivan, Cillian Barry,  Kamso Obi,  Louie Roche, Conor O Riordan, Frank O Flynn,  Ryan O Callaghan,  Gearoid Gubbins, Ben Knox, Colin Hogan, Oran Kielty,  Cameron O Sullivan, Ciaran O Dowd,  Cillian O Sullivan,  Gearoid O Connell, Luke Harrington, Thomas O Riordan.

TOM CAVANAGH RIP.

It was with a great sense of sadness that we learned of the death of Tom Cavanagh of Fermoy. A successful businessman in the town Tom was a most generous benefactor of clubs, communities, educational and research projects and piloted the Irish Business Against Litter campaign. We in Bride Rovers extend our sympathy to his four children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and other relatives and friends. May he rest in peace.

REMEMBERING JERARD -21 YEARS ON.

Jerard Kenny was a popular young hurler with Bride Rovers. He played at wing forward on the Bride Rovers under 12 team that defeated Tracton in Mayfield in July 2000 in the County Final. The Rovers won by 5 7 to 2 1. One verse of a ballad written at the time is as follows;

In goal was young Butler and brave at the test

Forde, Cotter and Collins- full backs -the best.

Two Kearneys and Walsh  were classy halfbacks

Whose hurling created so many attacks.

Michael Collins our Captain shone out at midfield

With young Padraig O Keeffe refusing to yield

Murphy and Kenny were assisted by Quinn

O Brien, O Keeffe, Dooley -they kept the ball in.

Jer died in a tragic accident in September 2001 and all in the Bride Rovers Club remember him at this time..

 BON VOYAGE FACHTNA.

This week Fr Fachtna O Driscoll departed these shores to return to his Mission post in Liberia. Bn Voyage and the very best of luck fachtna.

Car Boot Sale.

Last Sunday was washout due to incessant rain early in the morning so now it’s hoping that early October will see a return to a dry day for the next Car Boot Sale.

Our deepest sympathy is extended to the Buckley family of Glenville on the death of Lil Buckley nee O Neill. Her family have made huge contributions to  the GAA in Glenville and other parishes including our own where Betty (Cahill) has been to the fore in all aspects of Community life.
